My highest (recorded) weight was 254 lb about 3 years ago. I was diagnosed with PCOS on January 8 and diabetes on January 21, so I know what you're going through. I've lost some weight in the past, but always went back to my old habits. I feel like this time around is different and am currently at my lowest weight in probably a decade.
I've realized that most of my hunger and cravings are really just from being bored. At the beginning, I chewed a lot of gum and drank a lot of water to help with that. I've also found that I can't completely cut things out of my diet. I need to have a little cheat every now and then to prevent binges. As long as it doesn't make my blood sugar spike a lot or make me go over my daily calorie goal, I let myself have a small amount of sugar-free chocolate or potato chips or whatever I'm craving.
As for the metformin, I've only been on it for 3 weeks, so I don't have a lot of experience. I was prescribed the regular generic and had some mild side effects with that. My doctor just gave me some samples of the extended release version because less people tend to experience side effects with it. I think it has helped with excess hair. Also, it's still a bit early to tell, but I think it has helped my blood sugar levels (although diet and exercise played a part).
I see that you're a calorie counter too! If you're on My Fitness Pal, feel free to friend me there. My username is immacuatemfp.
