Derailed and looking for a change

  • So I just got back here about a week ago. I ate 1200 calories per day for six days before I had a huge binge/purge (I'm bulimic). I know that the calories that I ate were far below recommended levels, although I did lose ten pounds in about five days. This was partly water but still a win. So now I'm reassessing my dieting strategy. I'd like to try McDougall's diet, which is a high carb/ low fat and protein vegan diet.

I have two questions. What plans do other bingers here follow? Have you (regardless of your binge history) been on the McDougall plan? What were your experiences? Thanks guys!
  • You might want to consider some local support.

I've heard good things about this group.
  • If cravings and binges are your problem, a high carbohydrate diet is likely a terrible solution. Hard for both cravings and blood sugar stability. And I agree with John that some local support might be a good idea
  • I'm a binger too. But processed carbs are my trigger, and swearing off them has really helped.
  • I did the McDougall diet but it was years and years ago. I think it's important to include fats in your diet (healthy fats) that come from fish, nuts, seeds and avocado. I believe that our brains need fats. I also depend on protein to sustain a leveled blood sugar. My advice would be (aside from the great advice you already got) to continue counting calories and to consume way more than the 1200 you're having. That is just too little and if I had so few calories, I'd be miserable. At your weight, the calorie range would be much higher. There are online calculators that would help you determine your calorie range. Google BMR. I wish you all the best.
  • Yeah, I think your calories are too low. I suspect it will go more smoothly if you up your calorie intake. I think support is a great idea, too.
