Default I'm craving salt...

For the past 2 days I've been craving salt. Anyone know why? A long time ago I was told when that happens that I need to drink more water...is this true? I drink a lot of water...

From what I've read there are many reasons why we crave salt. From not drinking enough water, to your body simply being accustom to it from your diet. And also it's not necessarily the salt itself the body is craving or in need of. It could be the other minerals (eg, Mg & Calcium) and such that are found naturally in salt (but have been removed from what we use as table salt). In which case you can "give in" to the salt craving but it will only give you a temporary fix till your body realizes again that it didn't get the minerals it was looking for.

I wanted to add that if you really want salt, I highly recommend eating seaweed. It has that salty taste and is actually good for you. I also like eating raw sauerkraut if I feel like having salt because it has natural probiotics. I just try to limit those items because I end up feeling super bloated for a few days after. Still, they're low cal so the effect is temporary.

If you're eating a very low sodium diet, might it be possible that you actually need more salt?

I use sea salt in all my cooking instead of regular salt. So i thought mayve my body was missing the real stuff since I started my diet. And I take vitamins so shouldn't that take up a part of the lack in stuff?

It is possible to be drinking too much water, and that would lead to craving salt because it's all being flushed away.

I second the idea of pickles!

Salt is not evil, it is a necessary part of our nutrition.

When I crave something salty, I eat something salty.

On this lonnnnggggg weight loss journey of mine, I have learned to become in tune with "my body." I am becoming more & more "trusting" of what my body is telling me. I am believing more & more that my body KNOWS what it needs. Therefore, when I crave something salty, I eat something salty.

And yeah, a pickle is a GREAT (low-cal!) salty food
