Weight Loss Before Others Noticed

So how much weight loss did it take before others could notice?

josey 03-11-2011 02:07 PM

So far nobody but me and my bf (he knows). 16lbs and nobody knows...

abetterme 03-11-2011 02:08 PM

About 10 or 15 lbs for me

HeyPhatty 03-11-2011 02:10 PM

I think it really depends on where you lose it at first. Years ago when I was a WW member, when I dropped the pounds, people could tell because I was losing alot in my face. Ahh those were the good 'ol days lol. Of course now I've gained all I had lose plus like 50lbs. I wouldn't base my success on what people say though, some tend to keep their thoughts to themselves.

Just the other week I had 6inches cut off my hair and not one person at my job has said anything. And that is really noticable :)

Congrats on your weight loss! Good luck ;)

MonicaM 03-11-2011 02:10 PM

Having successfully lost weight many times, and then packed it back on, I have a few thoughts on this. I think the people you see most often, like co-workers do not notice until you buy new clothes. I think the first to notice are the people you only see once a month or so. And, I think if you have been down this road a number of times, some people might notice and not mention it at all.

sept15lija 03-11-2011 02:13 PM

It took about 50 pounds for people to start commenting. I don't know when they noticed, it might have been earlier, but still weren't quite sure. 50 pounds seemed to be the magic number when people would come up to me and ask what I'd been doing.

beerab 03-11-2011 02:14 PM

Around 30 lbs. But I think I was also wearing smaller clothes too so that made people see it even more :)

k15g15 03-11-2011 02:32 PM

Twenty for me.

ERHR 03-11-2011 02:43 PM

15 lbs or so. I've gotten a huge wave of compliments in the last 2 weeks at about 20 lbs down.

PlumBlossom 03-11-2011 02:50 PM

Around 18 or so for me - for people who know I am dieting. But, no one who doesn't know (which is a LOT of people in my life) has noticed. I am hoping they'll notice soon... seems like 30 is quite a lot. It might be that they are noticing but won't say anything until they are really confident so as to not accidentally offend or something?

I agree with beerab, I haven't spent much on new clothes and when I do, I imagine that people will have a better idea then. I hope. :)

supergir111 03-11-2011 02:53 PM

35 for me. But I don't think the majority have noticed :)

Jen516 03-11-2011 03:16 PM

I think it depends on where you start! For me, people I see a lot noticed after 25lb, but it took 50-60 before random acquaintances to notice or comment...

Serbrider 03-11-2011 03:41 PM

I think it depends on how much you have to lose honestly... our neighbor is quite overweight... doctors might say grossly obese. She's an AWESOME lady. I don't know exactly how much down she is... but over the past few months... my mom and I have noticed her shrinking... it's awesome to see. :)

For me... I was asked by one person if I had lost weight when I was only 3 lbs down... :p I guess it's visible in my face... *shrugs*

I dunno.

carter 03-11-2011 03:57 PM

I have no idea when anyone noticed - but I lost 50 pounds before anyone commented. Even then, I only got 2 or 3 comments. When I passed 75 pounds, about a month ago, some kind of switch flipped - I have since lost count of the number of comments I've received.

Search the forum for "paper towel theory" for a very nice discussion of why this is the case.

XLMuffnTop 03-11-2011 04:04 PM

Two comments from co-workers at 25 pounds lost. Of course, I'm wearing more figure flattering clothes so it's probably a combination of loss+clothing.

summerlove 03-11-2011 04:30 PM

When I started losing weight again at 193 last year, I got down to about 175 before people noticed - and omg it was like a flood gate of compliments and comments.

niafabo 03-11-2011 04:38 PM

No one seemed to notice until I lost 40-50 pounds and some people still take a moment to say anything although that could just be them being polite. Seriously though the first 20-30 pounds people would look at me like I was lying when I said I had lost a lot of weight. :/

NaturalStupidit 03-11-2011 04:42 PM

For me it didn't take that long at all. I think it's because the first place to "lose weight" is my face.

stacygee 03-11-2011 04:43 PM

I started getting A BUNCH of comments after 60 pounds.

fivestone 03-11-2011 04:45 PM

After about 10-12 pounds people noticed something was different, but after about 15-20 people definitely mentioned weight loss.

luciddepths 03-11-2011 05:32 PM

Mine was at around 45 lbs. They stated that they knew/noticed earlier but just werent sure if they should say anything.

Rana 03-11-2011 08:05 PM

25 lbs

But with a caveat.... people would say that they noticed I lost weight when I had gained it or my weight stayed the same... so I think sometimes people notice something is different, haircut or outfit or something and think it's weight loss, at least in my case!!!!

But when people could really tell it was about 25 lbs.

runningfromfat 03-11-2011 09:24 PM

I'm down 32 lbs since this summer and haven't gotten much of any comments yet. I think part of the problem is that the vast majority of my weight was baby weight and DD is 2 so maybe they figure I finally pulled it together to lose the weight even if it's a bit delayed so it doesn't warrant commenting? Either that or some, if they haven't seen me for awhile, might have my prebaby weight me in mind when they see me (in that case I look 18 lbs heavier if anything).

I have a feeling I'll have to get well below my prepregnancy weight before i get any comments.

chickadee32 03-11-2011 10:39 PM

I've lost 30+ lbs in 2 months, and no one has noticed. I'm not really surprised by that though, as a) I don't think I look any different when dressed, b) I'm still wearing all the same clothes (my pants are too big now, but I'm hoping to get another month out of them and then go shopping for warm weather stuff) and c) most of my loss so far seems to have come from my waist and hips, and those are well-covered by my clothing. My husband says he can tell, but I think he's just trying to make me feel good (which is very sweet).

I'm hoping that when I get down to 20% of my body weight lost, which will be ~55 lbs lost, the difference will be more noticeable to people. Certainly by then I'll have had to purchase some new pants at least. :)

Cali Doll 03-12-2011 08:37 AM

About 20 pounds or so for me (I had to lose 30 pounds in order to go down a size). There are so many factors, though. As was stated earlier, your starting weight and height are big factors. A 20 pound loss is less noticeable on a bigger person.

yossarianlives 03-12-2011 11:19 AM

It was about 20lbs before anyone commented on my weight loss. So 215 down to 195-ish.

However, I put on 7lbs while traveling, and people are commenting that I look thinner. :/

ShanIAm 03-12-2011 05:35 PM

I had started receiving comments about 15 pounds down and then they trickled away for a little bit. It was only when I reached almost 30 pounds down and bought clothes that actually fit me did people REALLY notice. But that's me. I agree with the others when they say it depends on how much you have to lose.

Xaria 03-12-2011 05:52 PM

I started having people ask me if I was losing weight around 30 lbs. That prompted me to buy some new clothes, and right after that, everyone seemed to be noticing.

Horo 03-12-2011 06:48 PM

It was about at 50 lbs lost that people really started noticing(or making comments, at least) because that was also when I started getting new clothes.

JOLINA 03-12-2011 07:32 PM

I just had someone notice my weight loss last seek. I have lost 35+ pounds so far.
I've been throwing out my really baggy clothes, and I am wearing the next size down.
:^:

Lrn932 03-12-2011 08:44 PM

I've lost about 20 lbs and so far no one has said anything. Pretty depressing, all the effort but no one notices oh well its more for me than anyone else right!

rachael 03-12-2011 09:08 PM

About 40. It's funny, though, because now I can tell when I have had a visible loss because suddenly a bunch of people will say something again after a while of nothing. It's like, hmm, that last pound must have been a major one. Haha

LandonsBaby 03-13-2011 09:54 PM

I drag this out so much I don't expect people to notice very often. My husband and my mom can see very small changes but nobody else is going to notice because I'm so dern slow.

ShesLosingIt 03-13-2011 09:59 PM

It was a good 40-50 lbs before people that saw me every day started noticing. 160 lbs later, I've lost a LOT in the face but at first, I think it was just slooooowly coming off from random places (wrists, cankles, etc...).

Larry H 03-13-2011 10:22 PM

I have lost 50 pounds and no one has noticed or at least said anything yet.

Larry

josey 04-29-2011 02:53 PM

Ha! Today!! A colleague finally noticed and asked. Only 33 lbs down and they start noticing ;-)

zoodoo613 04-29-2011 03:05 PM

Wahoo!

I'm six weeks in and 11 lbs. down, so I wouldn't expect anyone to notice. I doubt my husband has even noticed that I'm trying to lose weight, much less that I have lost any. He's not very observant. :D

luciddepths 04-29-2011 05:52 PM

It's taken 62 lbs for my brother to notice/comment!
I seen him and he says "wow your like a twig!" ha ha

Well, you know, brothers ;-) I am sure mine won't notice either. Unless I really make it to goal before I see him again in December. Wouldn't that be something!

NicoleInCt 04-30-2011 03:20 PM

I'm at 17 pounds lost now and I've been wearing baggy clothes for the past couple months. When I wore tighter clothing this week quite a few people noticed, so I'd say 15-20 pounds before others really see the difference.
