Mini-Crisis

  • Okay so I bought a treadmill and so far it is going great. I have really stuck to my guns and did 30 minutes at 3mph at 10% incline every morning so far. I also tried to do the Jillian Michaels 30-day shred in the evenings. I am sore from the treadmill and I sweat buckets... but the video is so intense that I find myself scared to do it again. The first time was BAD... I had a massive headache after. I felt good that I finished it and I know it does a good job. But, am I just being lazy or what? I guess I'm just venting.
  • It's great that you bought a treadmill and that you're using it in the mornings!! It's motivating me to dust mine off and use it again, too. As far as the Jillian DVD goes - I bought one but have yet to use it (talk about LAZY!), but friends of mine at work do use it about 3 times a week and they got used to it. They all say that it's a killer at first, so don't feel bad that you had such a hard time with it - go at your own pace. You may want to do it M-W-F so your muscles have a chance to rebound, and the headache is probably due to dehydration, so keep drinking lots of water in the hours before the workout. Keep up the good work - your discipline will show results.
  • Don't keep trying to do too much, too quickly. I remember you writing how you were dizzy after the treadmill workouts earlier this week ... slow and steady - or you will find that you start avoiding activity because you're not working yourself into it. It's great to be excited, but do so in a way that your body can adjust - it's not a tv show where you're pushing yourself until you puke for ratings. There is no dr. alongside you. Do what you can and work up to challenge yourself in increments.
  • Well, I did work up with the treadmill. I slowed down and my stepping process. As we were saying you have to walk before you can run and I understand that. I just wanted to start doing some strength training too and though this would be the perfect compliment to the cardio. Well, it is alot more intense than what I had imagined. I'm still going to do it, I'm just going to allow myself to stop and breathe instead of trying to keep up. LOL I know building good habits don't happen overnight and I'm honestly not expecting them too. I guess I just want to try it all to see what works well for me. The only bright spot is I do know HOW to back off when I don't feel well. I guess I'm not scared anymore now that I have made the decision to take the video at my own pace and not try to keep up.
  • I have always done the shred on a rotating, every other day basis. Started in September on Level 1, now I am on Level 3, but still doing some of the moves at a modified pace.

This KILLED me at the beginning. It still does. Ease your way into it.
  • I agree that you might need to cut back some and do the DVD every other day.
  • Give yourself a break! When I started, I was going 30DS about 4 times a week. It was my only exercise at that point and it KILLED me. It's really hard - no shame about taking your time with it, and modifying moves.

Remember, you're in this for the long haul. There's no reason to punish yourself with exercise that you hate, and/or can't sustain long-term. It's much better to build up to something than to burn yourself out.
