"Waiting for Whoosh" Thread.
Hi, I am stalled on 127 lb for day # 13 now. The interesting fact is back in 2000 I staled on 127lb for 18 days as well and after I lost 3 lb in one week….whoosh! I am very annoyed that I am doing all I used to do in previous 4 weeks when I lost 8 lb and weight is still not moving, but I know my whoosh somewhere around the corner, so I am patiently waiting.:goodscale
How long was your stall? Anything in particular you did or eat to trigger the whoosh? My last stall, before this one, was 10 days and then I lost 3 lb overnight. I had low carb day before and 2 glasses of red wine as per my journal. Here's some information about "whooshes" by Lyle McDonald http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/fat...uishy-fat.html And a brief excerpt: “Many people have noted that fat loss is often discontinuous, that is it often happens in stops and starts. So you’ll be dieting and dieting and doing everything correctly with nothing to show for it. Then, boom, almost overnight, you drop 4 pounds and look leaner. What’s going on? ... After fat cells had been emptied of stored triglyceride (fat), they would temporarily refill with water (glycerol attracts water, which might be part of the mechanism). So there would be no immediate change in size, body weight or appearance. Then, after some time frame, the water would get dropped, the fat cells would shrink. The fat was emptied and burned off days or weeks ago but until the water is dropped, nothing appears to have happened.” |
I typically have a stall every two weeks because of how my body's ovulation cycle works. I stalled at 251.something for 10 days. Then in less than two weeks I dropped six pounds.
|
That is really interesting information- thank you for sharing it :)
|
I love the whoosh... and hate the stall. My trainer had me have a "cheat" meal last time I stalled. I had a hamburger with cheese and 6 beers. I was up the next day and within three days whooshed down 3 pounds. It surprises your body when you are on a low cal diet and gets it to work harder again.
I am up right now b/c I was off my program accidently yesterday... but perhaps waiting for the whoosh will motivate me to stay on program! |
That information is false. Fat cells do not function that way, they do not temporarily "fill" with water. Water only makes up about 10% of fat, however it DOES make up about 70% of our muscles. If I'm holding onto weight, it almost always has to do with muscle growth and repair or menstrual cycle. Regardless, there are many reasons a body will hold onto weight, and many reasons for it to drop it. It is always in the process of burning and storing calories in unison, repairing organs, digesting food... Any number of reasons could account for the "whoosh" and for retaining weight.

I only lose weight by 'whooshes'. I can't even fathom the slow, .3 lbs a day type stuff. My body simply doesn't work that way, and it never has.
Currently I've been setting on 147 for a week, and I am soooo ready to see that number change. I even dreamt about the scale last night and I never do that!!! I've been living on 1200-1400 calories per day, lifting 3x a week, and cardio about 4x a week. Weighing my food, being exact on my measurements etc. I am tired of seeing the same number every morning!! I am going to NYC at the end of March and I would love to be under 140 by then, but I just have to see what my body is willing to do. I can never make it do anything. :) |
I've been at 127 forever as well! I want that whoooosh :-(
|
TOM came today- yipee! Ahem, I mean.. :o the only reason I say that is that I always get a nice 'whoosh' when it's over. I've noticed since losing at a lower weight, that is the pattern of loss I have now. Slow as molasses most of the month, and then a decent whoosh after TOM. Not ideal but I'll take it!
|
I am a whoosher, which can be very annoying! When I first started, I was only weighing monthly so I wasn't very in tune with my weight loss pattern. Which was absolutely FINE with me, couldn't handle the head game of the scale. I'm still having trouble with it as I started weekly weighing at the beginning of the year. I've done nothing but whoosh, then stay the same for a good couple weeks, ever since the weekly weigh-ins started.
I just WHOOSHED today!!! WooWWWWWOOOOOO! I was starting to get a little weird in the head after over 2 weeks of no change. I stepped up my exercise, and honestly was feeling just a teensy bit smaller, but no confirmation from the scale was making me wonky. I woke up this am knowing it was my weigh-in day, and I was actually really nervous (almost scared) about getting on the scale, knowing I was going to be in a funk if I saw NO loss again. But I lost 5lbs!!!, so of course I'm on cloud 9. I MUST get used to this whooshing and stop letting it affect me like this. Hope your whoosh comes soon, OP! |
Day 6 and still no change on the scale.
I came back in here today just to read the posts so I could see where others routinely have to go longer too. It's frustrating because I just started losing weight, so it's not like I've had good weight loss already. Everything I've lost so far, was mostly the water weight. I feel like I haven't really even lost anything yet! :( Just gotta keep telling myself it will happen. |
Well, today is day # 14 for me…in last 7 days I added more carb (1500 cal) for 2 days and then went to very low carb (1,000 cal) on the day 3. This was supposed to move the scale, but it didn’t.

I am a whoosher. I can go for 4-5 weeks without losing any weight. Then, whoosh! And those whoosh days sometimes come at inconvenient times because I am running to the bathroom to pee constantly.
Now that I am aware of how my body releases weight, I don't get freaked out about the seeming lack of progress in the short term. I just keep at it. |
I've been stuck at 260 for like two weeks T_T I never heard of this whoosh thing before but I sure hope it'll happen to me soon!
|
I'm a whoosher too! (Sounds a little dirty doesn't it?! lol) I only loose in whooshes, a few ounces up and down, up to two lbs up sometimes, but then a whoosh to the new weight and I start the waiting game again ;)
I never understood that untill this time around, it has led to most of my times giving up in the past - I just didn't have the patience my body needs. Now I know its OK if the scale doesn't move in two weeks, If I am doing things right I'll get my whoosh - and that has made all the difference. |
I've been right around 137.2 since 1/29. Got a bit below it, then bounced back above it, but I have seen that number on the scale over and over.
Last week my calories averaged 1300, this week 1600, but definitely caried the daily totals a lot. Ate WW pasta for lunch every day this week, so that may not be helping. Next week will cut down on the carbs and calories and try to get some more strength training in. Went to body sculpting Monday night and was sore through yesterday, so only did cardio the rest of the week. Nice to know I'm not alone in this frustration! |
After reading some more on stalls I have decided to go for “break” which supposes to help me to pass plato. I will maintain for 1 week and then will lower my calories again. During this week, I will weight train only and will skip cardio completely, to shock my body with changes in my fitness routine.
Will let you know if I will have any success! Keep posting girls and please share your experience…. |
i've been stalled since january. that month, i only lost 5 lbs even though the previous four i had lost around 10-12. i'm going pretty slow this month, as well, so i've started swapping it up now. i guess we'll see how it goes.
i started weight training in january, so i'm assuming that gained muscle mass is what's caused the weight on the scale to move so slowly. |
I've heard if it's been a very long time since you've had a whoosh if you drink a liter of water with 1 TBS of sea salt in it your weight will drop because it causes your body to release the water trapped in the fat cells. Not sure if it works but I've heard heard good things about it. Warning though you wouldn't wanna drink too much salt because you could end up getting dehydrated.

Dear Whoosh Fairy,
I am now on my seventh day at 147.5lbs. You may come by any day now. Signed, Whooshless in Tennessee :D |
I guess I could be considered a whoosher. I tend to stay at the same weight for a few days and then drop 2-3 pounds over a couple of days and then hover around the same weight again. I had a drop to my newest low weight this morning so I'm hoping the trend will continue tomorrow...I haven't really been eating nutritiously lately though (not many veggies and not enough water) so I think if I really want that whoosh I need to get 100% on track. I've still been eating on plan, but my body seems to let go of the weight when I eat more veggies, healthy fats and protein rather than the low-carb mini pizzas I've been eating today.
Good luck to everyone on their whooshes! I'm due for one after not losing anything for a few days. |
I thought this thread, with its link to an article that helps to explain why your weight stalls or goes up when you are staying OP, was certainly worth bumping back up to the top. So many people become discouraged and fall off the wagon because they are discouraged by a weight loss stall. If you just stay on plan and wait it out, you are certain to whoosh too! :D
|
Thanks Jacqui D, I love this thread Haha. I've been stuck at 169/168/169 for what seems like ages. I did have a "whoosh" once. I could SURE use one now.
|
You and me both, MauiKai! I've been juggling the same two lbs since the beginning of August. It's like my body knows I am hoping to reach Onederland and is keeping me in suspense, lol!
|
Pfft, I've been fighting the same 6 pounds since the beginning of LAST AUGUST.
The only good thing is that I started running and strength training about the same time, so I've gone from a size 12 to an 8, even though the scale is not changing. |
Well that's something then Riddy. I've not budged in size or poundage :(
|
Whoosh, please come! I have been so good with my eating and exercise and, in 16 days, I have only lost .4 lbs.
|
Never heard of this term previously but I'm definitely a whoosher! Typically my weight doesn't budge throughout the week and sometimes it even goes up then come Saturday, I'll drop at least a pound. Although I suspect this has something to do with me waking up later than usual on weekends.
|
Thank you, whoosh fairy! I hit Onederland today! :yay: Now, if it will just keep going, I have a mini-goal that I'd love to meet sooner than later!

This thread title makes me think of "Waiting to Exhale." "Waiting to Whoosh" would make a good movie about ppl dieting. ;)
I'm definitely a whoosher, although my whooshes are never very large. I seem to lose about 1 to 2 pounds a month, and the bulk of the drop happens all at once. Jacqui Congrats, that's awesome! :carrot: |
Mine came this morning! I "whooshed" almost a whole pound and FINALLY broke the 168 barrier to 167.8! Yay!
|
Thanks everyone! And incredibly, I'm still whooshing! I lost 2 more lbs since yesterday! I am just so excited!
Mauikai, yay!!!!! :yay: I'm so glad for you! |
I broke mine too. From 223 to 222, FINALLY.
|
I mini-whooshed again! Today I dropped over a pound overnight. I went down to 166.4! PLEASE let this mean steady downward movement of my weight until goal!
I can't wait until I can just have this in my signature! http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt...ASZ/weight.png |
The whoosh Gods listened to my prayers.
- 1.4 lbs on Sunday - .8 lbs on Monday - .6 today (Tuesday) I had my TOM late last week, so the weight loss is not all diet related. |
Awesome Matisse :)
|
Fantastic Mauikai and Matisse! I gained 2 lbs after cheat day (built in to my diet plan) on Saturday, but whoosh, I lost it overnight last night, so I am back down to 197! My goal for the month of August is 196, so hopefully I'll keep whooshing!
|
Dear Whoosh Fairy,
Thank you for your visit! I was at 202.9 on Saturday morning, and feeling rather down, and now I'm at 198.7! Still keep coming to visit, I like having you around!! signed, Happy to be back in onederland! |
Yay for Buffin! Now send the whoosh fairy my way.
