Does being hungry distract you from life sometimes?
I'm really experiencing that right now. Sometimes I will be at a social event, and I just can't wait to leave, so I can go home and eat, because there is nothing I can eat there. Or, today, I ate too much during the day, so it's carrots for dinner. I had plans to meet a friend for drinks (seltzer) and an app, but cancelled, because I knew I would eat if I went.
I remember this from being thin before; it comes and goes, but doesn't go away. Oprah even acknowledged it on one of her shows: Losing weight involves going to bed hungry sometimes. What I remember happened in the past is that, ultimately, something came up with work that I HAD to focus on--I couldn't afford the time and energy drain of parceling out food, and resisting temptation--and I ate like a normal person--and gained weight. The only time I really found a way around this was the years I took diet pills, and that WAS effective, because they kept me from being hungry all the time.
Just feeling frustrated, and recognizing, at least for me, that there are / were very pragmatic reasons for just giving in and being overweight--the freedom to live life free from distraction. But then, of course, being overweight causes its own set of problems.
i have to say i am never REALLY hungry. i make sure that i never get to that point b/c it leads me to make poor choices. what plan are you on?
im a calorie counter and i break up my calories into small meals (5-6/day). if you're having problems at parties and social situations, pack a fiber bar or something in your purse to tide you over. are you sure you're eating enough?
i dont agree that you have to go to bed hungry. maybe you have to go to bed craving something, or not totally full, but hunger is your bodies way of telling you that it needs fuel. listen to it!
I agree, you shouldn't be so hungry all the time and you shouldn't have to go to bed hungry. That's just not sustainable. Find more filling, low cal foods to let you eat more for less. I eat LOTs of veggies on days when I'm hungry but low on points (ww).
Mmmm I´m not usually hungry, but I am today, I had a little party and had 2 pieces of nut cake (bad idea) which consumed all my dinner calories... (I really don´t know if I should have something and go over my limit or just stay this way).. but as I´m hungry, today I get your point.
The problem is that it seems you usually feel hungry so maybe you´re too low on your calories, or you are making bad choices (like me today lol) or you are confusing "hunger" with "wanting to eat something", which is different.. I think you should take a look at your calories, your food choices and how you really feel and do something bcause I don´t think is good for you to feel hungry all the time...
Thanks, you guys. I'm doing my own diet--it's sort of based on the old Diet Center diet, or Scarsdale, minus bread. I'm not eating a whole lot of calories, but then, I don't get a whole lot at my height and activity level.
Sapitaa, I think you're right--it's probably a lot of just "wanting to eat something." The easiest times are when I'm doing something fun, and don't even think about food.
For tonight, I've got my carrots, and I picked up some sugar-free Jell-O, and sugar-free Popsicles, which should get me through. That and 3FC!
Hey, I'm the same height as you. And I'm with the others. I am rarely, rarely ever hungry. I just don't allow myself to get hungry. I hate that feeling. I can't function when I'm hungry and like's been said - it sets me up for making poor choices. Therefore I make sure I eat very voluminous and satiating foods. I don't know how many calories you're consuming, but it they're spread through out the day and the "right" ones you can get a LOT of food and filling power from them.
I would never have stuck with this as long as I have, over three years now if I was hungry. Never. Ever. I was willing to change my lifestyle completely and permanently to lose and keep off the weight, but I was NOT willing to starve (or eat tasteless foods) in order to do so.
And as far as Oprah goes, well just because she says something, doesn't mean it has to be. I never go to sleep hungry. Never.
What is it that you're eating? Maybe it's time to tweak it a bit?
I agree with the others. I eat PLENTY of food, and I eat every 2-3 hours. I never go to bed hungry. And, I always have emergency food in my car/purse for those social occasions where there are no acceptable food choices.
Honestly, I feel like I eat MORE now than I ever did at 200+ lbs. I just eat clean, healthy calories.
Really, this isn't about deprivation, or NOT eating what we want. It is about changing what we WANT to be the things that are healthy and life-giving.
I just wanted to add that a normal BMI for someone your height is approximately 100 to 120 pounds. So perhaps there's no reason for you to try to stay so low!
even at your height, women shouldn't go below 1200 calories. please make sure you are eating enough for your body, see the thread about the woman who died trying to follow a very low calorie diet.
I don't "do" hunger. I don't mind being hungry from time to time but as a general rule, I don't let myself get there. I have found healthy fats and proteins help.
And as far as Oprah goes, well just because she says something, doesn't mean it has to be. I never go to sleep hungry. Never.
Especially since Oprah doesn't have a good track record of maintaining her weight loss. If she was a successfull, long-term maintainer then I would give a little more weight to her words. (Don't get me wrong, she looks great. I watch her show and read her magazine, but I don't necessarily follow her weight loss advice!)
If I am hungry before bed, most times I eat. If I'm out of calories and I am hungry, I still eat. It rarely happens, but when it does, I have a half a serving of almonds or 1/2 cup of raisin bran with milk. Something small. I can't sleep if I'm really hungry.
