Not quite sure how to reply to posts yet but I will get the hang of it.... My question is- Should I take a fiber supplement or eat fiber rich foods or maybe both, don't want to over do it but yet want to do it right.
IMO getting fiber from your foods (whole grains, fruits, veggies) is always better then a supplement. You'll also be getting the other needed nutrients that the food provides and supplements don't. Add it slowly and you'll be fine.
Fiber supplements have 1 or maybe 2 grams of fiber per dose. You can easily get that with a cup of strawberries or an apple and not have to swallow pills.
You should aim to get at least 25 grams of fiber a day.
Go slow to build it up so your intestines get used to it, and make sure you drink lots of water.
I have found that powdered oat fiber from Honeyville (you can google their site) is great to add to things to boost the fiber content easily - and it mixes well in sauces, oatmeal, yogurt and such as long as you don't use too much.
Did any of you start increasing your fiber wrt previous bowel habits?
