What kind of scale do you prefer?
I've had the same ole weigh scale for about 10 years now - maybe 12 - and it's time for a change. I've been putting it off somewhat because I'm pretty sure the one I have weighs under by 3-4 lbs and I like that!
Anyway it's looking pretty decrepit, and I'm wondering what's everyone's choice - digital or the other kind (don't know what to call it) with the needle? |
I used to use the kind that was digital and gave me more exact numbers (ex: 200.984 vs. 200) and I really liked it. The only reason I stopped using it is I weigh myself on the wii fit now.

I love my Tanita digital scale.
|
I love my Tanita digital scale. It's a little pricey, but worth every penny.
|
Thistoo, so funny, we posted at the same time and wrote (& thought) the same exact thing.
I was also going to write that it was a bit pricey and worth every penny, but decided to leave it out. Funny |
Hee! You beat me by being more succinct :) It's so true, though; I love that scale.

Digital scale.

I like my WW Digital scale.
Digital all the way! |
For years I've used a regular dial type scale. Recently I bought a digital. The digital says I weigh five pounds more than the dial scale says. The digital recently said I gained two lbs whereas my dial said I lost one. I don't know what to beleive any more and am thinking of ditching them both.
|
Thistoo and Rockinrobin, what makes the Tanita so great? And how expensive is it?
Luvja, WW digital scale as in Weight Watchers? InnerChild, ha ha, I can relate. I'm just positive that a digital is going to tell me I weigh more, maybe because the scales at my WW meeting are digital and I'm always 5 lbs heavier there than at home. |
Ahhhh, my digital matches my doctors office scale so is likely correct then isn't it? UGH! I hate scales, I hate scales, I hate scales!!!!!

I broke down and bought a digital scale yesterday (cheapy $20) and it doesn't seem to work. :( I press the corner and it blinks and zeroes out and then I put weight on it and it does nothing at all (just blackness), or the E comes up. I haven't wanted to stand on it yet, because I'm not due to weigh in for four more days. It is supposed to weigh accurately from .2 lbs to 300 lbs, and I've put heavy jugs of water on it and zilch. Anyone else had trouble with a digital scale? Is it something I'm doing wrong? Have you ever tried weighing anything besides yourself on it?
The last time I looked at buying a digital scale I talked myself out of it, because in the store I put some weights on them (from the workout section) and each one I tested showed a couple of lbs more than the weights I put on them. I figured if it was off a couple of lbs for 25lbs of weights, it might be off even more for my weight. I didn't need that kind of discouragement. I can barely read my dial scale any more, so I figured I'd live with the numbers, even if they aren't accurate, as long as they still reflect me losing. So, have any of you tested your digital scales to see if they actually weigh true? |
I have the dial kind, it was really cheap, $9.00. Seems to work fine, only problem is it's difficult to read.
|
I hated that if I leaned ever so slightly to one side on a dial scale(or at least MY dial scale) it said I weighed more or less, so now I use the digital scale my parents have in their room, even though it initially said I weighed more than my dial scale. My dial scale was like 10-15 dollars so I trust the fancy glass digital one anyway.

There are models that are quite a bit cheaper than that on Amazon, but it's a great brand. |

I paid about $50.00 for mine. |
I like the digital scales because if I lose even the smallest amount of weight, I want to know about it!

I a digital scale at K-Mart 2 weeks ago. It was on sale (29 bucks) and supposed to measure body weight, water weight & bone mass. What I liked most about it was that the display came off and could be held in your hands. I havent seen my toes in years, theres no way I could see that little dial by my feet. When I first stepped on it I got an error too. I spent an hour programming and reprogramming the thing to clear the error. No go. I'm thinking the stupid thing is broken. As a last test I programmed my 12 year old son as a user. It works fine!! So I google the error and find online documentation for my scale prodex-hk.com/pevr-2101.htm on the bottom of the page it says: If the results of the analysis exceeds the scales LC display, then >>ERR<< appears in the display. Afterwards the scale switches off immediately How's THAT for diet motivation! I exceed the scales display capability  I can laugh about it now but I cried like a baby that night. I can get my current weight on it and my first mini-goal is now to get the rest of the scale to work for me |
I have a digital too. It will do fat% and water% if I set it up but I can get really messed up in those things so I haven't done it yet.
I like the digital because it shows an appreciable change very quickly (even tho' one tenth of a pound is very small) it's encouraging. |
Awwww...Twice. What a story. You go on and kick that bad scale's a**. You can do it girl!!
|
What I dont get is the max capacity of it is 395lbs. I'm nowhere near that but I exceed it the display cabability?
I'm not thinking about it anymore. It's WAR!! that stupid scale isnt going to beat me! |
I just got one of the old fashioned beam balance scales (like they have or had in the doctor's office) I love it! Very accurate to a quarter pound. They had it on sale on amazon, with free shipping before Christmas.

Twice, that's a bummer
So I did it - I broke down and bought a digital. It's a Health O Meter, which funnily enough is the same brand as my old dial one. It does weigh me a couple of pounds heavier, probably the same weight as I clock in at Weight Watchers. I couldn't find a Tanita in my little town, but this one cost $54.00 so it's not a cheapie. I've gotten on and off a couple of times, same weight, so that's good. Like Violin Jen and Susan B, if I lose an ounce I want to know! Unfortunately I'm also going to know if I've gained an ounce  |
Twice, it sounds like you also bought a defective scale. I'd take it back, and test them in the store before bringing another one home. I called and they told me it might not work without more weight on mine, so I held two water jugs to throw off my weight (don't want to weigh before the 15th) and it did register a weight (a really scary over 200lb weight ). I got on the dial scale with the water jugs too, and while I can't really tell for sure what that one says, it looks to me like the digital might add about a lb. That's not too bad.
|
I have a Weight Watchers scale. It's pretty accurate. Though the one's at the gym weigh me about 4lbs heavier. They're the ones that are in the doctor's office and are extremely old. I strictly use my scale at home for weigh-ins so I don't go crazy. Though the gym scales show the same amount of loss, so who can go wrong with that?

Digital, digital, I wanna get digital...
My wee WW scales are great. |

I'm starting to hate my new digital scale(!)
It's accurate, I think; I got on and off three times this a.m. and it weighed the same each time; unfortunately, despite three days perfectly on-plan, I've GAINED 3/4 of a pound. Yuck. The balance beam scales sound interesting. Aren't they huge? What were the shipping charges like? |
There's one on amazon.com for 144.00 + free shipping
|
That's the one I got. I really like it. It is big though! I had to move our towel rack to make a place for it :) but there is something very motivating about it. I have a perfectly fine digital, but it's not the same as getting to move those weights down the line lol There is a little assembly required but that didn't take long.

Oh boy...I have a dilemma now.
Today was my bi-weekly weigh-in day. I got on the dial scale first, because that's what I've been using, and it is falling right on a line with no numbers near it, so it's easy to see I'm right at 190lbs. Now that's pretty incredible as that means I've just lost eight lbs in 15 days. I can only attribute that to my change in diet from 1000 calories to 1200 calories, adding mufas back into my diet everyday (which means I've increased healthy fats), and drinking a pot of black or green tea every day. But then I got on the new digital scale and it shows 194. Four pounds higher than the dial scale? I know I've lost the eight pounds, so what do I do now. Adjust all my previous numbers to add the four lbs so my actual loss is represented on my ticker, or delete four lbs when I weigh in on the digital scale from now on? I don't want to give up that four pounds of motivation, as it's real weight loss. I am going to take the digital scale with me to the doctor's office the next time I'm in town, and compare it to the doc's scale (which I know is accurate) to see if the digital scale is reading true or not. I think for now I have to add the four pounds to my previous numbers. What would you all do? |
