Default TV Show -- You Are What You Eat

It's British but I get it in reruns on cable. Have you seen it?

There are some practices and diagnostics that are ...um ... questionable, however ... They start with folks with deplorable eating habits and clean them up.

I've seen two episodes and enjoyed both. They involved four people in all and each was obviously healthier by the end of 8 weeks.

I think these shows go "over the top" knowing full well that most folks won't do half of what they're taught. I do think a body would be healthier if they did half of what's depicted.

It's ok. I watched it a few times and at first it was entertaining, but after about 3 episodes it got repetitive and obnoxious.

Also I believe Gillian McKeith's credentials are questionable to say the least and she's been under fire for her methods. She promotes detox diets and colonics as a way to lose weight and be healthier, which I think is unacceptable for a supposed licensed, PhD nutritionist.

Gillian McKeith is from same city I'm from, DUNDEE!! It's a city in Scotland, you should all come visit!

p.s. I've heard she doesn't actually have PhD but actually has some sort of weird qualification you can get online or something... we talk about her a lot over here !

The article about her in Wikipedia is pretty good. Unfortunately she's probably about as qualified as most folks who make millions from the weight loss industry.

Susan, I don't think it's celebrity bashing to express concern about the very questionable qualifications of someone who claims to be a nutritional expert, yet uses methods and practices that are ... again, questionable.

My understanding was that the "celeb bashing" issue here was more about saying X celeb was too skinny or too fat or not being realistic or whatever.

Talking about a celebrity "nutrition expert" (and I use the phrase loosely) is something that I think we should all be able to do openly here. We should be free to speak our minds about her methods, just as someone might say that a fad diet that says you'll lose 30 lbs in 30 days is full of ... ahem.

I know I'm resurrecting a thread from the dead but ... I cannot get those people out of my mind! They fried their foods in at least an inch of oil ... and ate like that several times a day! Four litres of oil a week ... between the two of them!

Does anyone come from a background like that? Is it more common than I thought?

I watch it every so often. Especially if I am working out and it's on. Silly as it may seem, the unflattering angles they get the people at and the close-ups of them eating really make me keep going on the elliptical machine I work out with. Ha.

I love this show, it does make you think...what wold my weekly food intake look like? I don't like the fact that she never promotes dairy foods.

I love this show! I take it with a grain of salt, like I try to do everything and I quite enjoy it. I don't think Gillian is a miracle worker or has everything right but I still like the show.

Ok - well, I love the show.

I think that Gillian is bang on. In today's society, there is far too much fast food & too easily accessible. Truth is, most hot dogs are made of pigs ears, snouts & intestines. I believe that she shocks people into wanting to eat healthy, real foods (fruits, vegs, fish, poulty etc) by showing them how disgusting a diet of processed & fried foods really is.

I used to watch it until it all became the same show over and over. The thing that struck me the most was how most of them "before" ate virtually no vegetables other than french fries and no fruit. I didn't realize so many actually thought that was a normal diet.

Yup, the no veggies and barely any fruit was and sometimes IS my diet. I am getting better tho. I have added fruits almost everyday and I eat green beans about 3 - 5 times a week. Not much, but better than none at all.

I also love this show. I've seen every episode. Beside Gillian's attitude, etc it really is fascinating to see what some people eat. I was the most shocked at the lady who took a the actual salt container and dumped it into a tray of meat. It was more added salt than I eat in a year!! I've also learned a lot about nutrients some foods contain. I also bought one of her books for recipes and some are delicious.

I bought the book yesterday too.

The salt shaker? I had nightmares about that show too! I can't remember now but it was something like a kilo of salt per week!
