Post-Op Blues

  • I had surgery on Thursday (uterine stuff, but no abdominal cuts for which I'm VERY grateful), which went well, but I feel like crap. I had fallen far off the weight-loss wagon for a few weeks before the surgery, and between that and my post-op recovery here, I'm up to 238. That makes me very sad.

I'm not trying to diet right now, but I don't have much of an appetite, so hopefully in the next couple of days my body will let loose a little water retention that I'm having from the surgery (I'm pretty sure I'm holding on, I'm feeling seriously bloated).

I don't have the energy to go full-blast into an exercise routine, but I have healthy food in the house and I'm planning on slowly working up the walking (which my dog will appreciate, he hasn't had his daily walk in two days) while eating healthy. Once I'm released to go back to work and get back to normal activities, I'll step it up.

So I've re-set my ticker, and am working on re-setting my attitude and commitment. Any support would be appreciated. I feel like I have SUCH a long way to go, and I don't want to slip further back than I already have. I'm about 9 lbs from my all-time high weight right now, and it's scary to be back here.
  • I'm sorry you're feeling so down! It may be normal to feel pretty poorly after surgery, though. Are you sure that you should be exercising at all? I had to be careful after my gall bladder removal...

This isn't the time to be worrying about weight and exericise--check with your doctor about what would be good to do. Walking sounds OK, but I'd still be careful.

  • As JayEll said, I wouldn't rush the exercise. And really, I think food management is the key to weight loss compared to exercise anyway. Make some nice healthy food plans and recommit to yourself! A couple of days on plan can do a world of good for your attitude! Hang in there!
  • My best wishes of a speedy recovery, Chrysalis.

Don't worry too much about exercise right now, but if you feel up to it, I am sure your pooch will appreciate the walkie.
Give yourself plenty of time to recover, while eathing healthy, and then attack exercise with full force!
  • Hope you're feeling better very, very soon!

After my kids were born (two regular, one C-section) I never, ever felt like eating for nearly two weeks (and yes, this is the ONLY time I've ever felt like that ). I think surgery of any kind can really knock you off your feet and your body needs time to recover. I agree w/Josephine -- concentrate on the food portion when you feel up to eating for now. As you provide your body w/nurishing foods and the rest it needs you'll get your strength back and can then start working out. Best of luck!
  • Oh, Chyrsalis, that stinks! But listen to yourself- your "self-talk" in your post is all about positive motivation and health! Your brain is ready to keep you going- trust your body and it will catch up sooner than you think. The whole idea of weight loss and exercise is to take excellent care of yourself. This is just one more piece of the puzzle. With your good attitude, you'll be back on plan as soon as possible, and your ticker will just slide along!
  • Thanks everyone, for the support.

By the way, I was right about the water retention -- in the space of one day (yesterday) I dropped nearly five pounds....and spent what felt like most of the day running to the bathroom! LOL My appetite also made a reappearance, and I've been keeping things healthy, despite a craving for salty stuff.

I seem to be getting back to normal today.
  • Just wanted to share some hugs: and to tell you that I feel for you. I had a medical procedure last week and have been struggling with getting "back on the diet horse" so to speak. I agree with everyone who has already posted here about taking it slowly, being good to yourself, and trusting that your body will come back from this and you'll be HUNGRY for exercise and food soon.

Hang in there! And keep up the positivity!! That's what I'm trying to do too!
