Over Ate Last Night; Starving Today

  • Why is it that when I have a big dinner, I find that I'm starving the next day??? It would seem that the opposite should be true: for instance, when I have a big breakfast, I'm good for eating light all of the rest of the day and I don't wake up the next morning feeling empty. Of course, once I'm hungry I feel like I should eat. So I tend to eat more that next day because I'm always trying to ward off hunger pangs.

    It's a slippery slope....
  • Not entirely sure, but when I did the 30 hour Famine (30 hours of not eating to have empathy for those starving and to raise money), the next day my stomache shrank and I could barely eat anything without feeling full (please nobody think this is a good idea or diet plan, this is STRICTLY for charity purposes and you are only allowed to do it once a year if you are an adult without an eating disorder). ANYWAY, I would guess that overeating at dinner would have the opposite effect and make your stomache grow making you more hungry in the morning??? Just a guess!
  • thats what happens to me.. if i pig out, im starving all the next day.. figure my stomach was stretched.. but if i watch my portions, i notice it takes less and less to fill me up
  • In my case it's partly what I eat. If I eat a lot of carbs, I do get my stomach growling the next day. Could that be the case in what you overate?

  • Generally, overeating causes a rise in insulin levels which triggers hunger. Which sucks, of course.
  • I think it has less to do with stretching your stomach, than with a spike in your insulin levels. When you eat a lot, and esp if you eat a lot of carbs, your insulin levels spike. When your insulin is high, your blood sugar level drops. When your blood sugar level drops, your body responds by saying "feed me" - in other words, hunger.

That's why a lot of diets say it's important to eat smaller meals more evenly spread out ... because you keep your blood sugar and insulin on an even keel, rather than the spikes and lows.

I do the same thing, though. If I have a night out and eat a bit more than normal (like last night when I had pizza - more carbs and food than I usually have at night), I am much hungrier the next morning. I try to eat a little more protein for breakfast (boiled egg or something like that), to help even things out!

  • I think it is the type of food that you eat that causes bingeing . it is not really hunger , just our bodies craving what is not in our best interest,if we are trying to lose weight. I know it is impossible for me to eat one cookie and I can guarantee it is not hunger that makes me want to eat a whole bag of Pepperidge Farm cookies.
