The article is about new words that have entered the language, and celebrities (yawn) who embody them, but the last pic is of a "Size Zero" in a bikini. (Size 4 in Britain).

Now, if that's the way God made you, that's all fine and dandy. But for this to be held up as the "ideal" that the rest of us have to "punish" ourselves to attain is just sickening. Dieting/eating right for health reasons is cool, that's why we're all here at 3fc. But this is too much!

When I saw that picture I wanted to call the Red Cross...

Oh good lord I NEVER want to be that thin. I want to be healthy. I do not want to be scared of wind as she may blow away.

That to me is totally sad. Nothing pretty about it. Totally looks like a starved person from a concentration camp.

So sad. I would like to see her gain 40 pounds (20 of muscle and 20 of fat!).

Does anyone else notice how the disparaging terms in relation to size/being "fat" are wacky?

The "cankles" picture is stupid ( she has large calves but a nicely defined ankle, IMO! She is SHORT! What do ya want :?: ) and the "muffin top" one lacks what the term proclaims (a "roll of flesh spilling over"!!!).

Soulbliss, I totally agree. That cankles picture just showed wide ankles. Not Cankles . My SIL has real cankles. Her lower ankle drapes completely over the top of her feet. My MIL has the same problem but hers has lessened greatly since losing weight.

The picture of "muffin top" didn't strike me as being that drastic either. Heck, I would look worse than that if my jeans were low cut and I was showing any of my belly. (Which BTW, will never happen), LOL.

Well, I've got sturdy ankles, a muffin top that hangs ove my size one skirt and I'm no celebutante ... nor do I look like any of those pictures :joker:

Here's what I think about whenever I see articles like that ... did some sneaky man put Kirstie Ally on a scale when she wasn't watching? Who sneaked up behind Nicole Ritchie and read the tag on her bikini? Remember Gloria Loring? Did someone measure her hips without her knowing?

yep its a british article but they're not "british" words. Obviously we use them now, but only after we watched them on American programmes... lol we love american programmes over here!

I didn't intend to say that the spirit of the article was British. Just that the magazine was.

I believe that mean-spiritedness is global ... Americans just publish a lot of it.

Is there a phrase or term that means picking away at anything with which we are unfamiliar, find scary, can't have, can't achieve, is so alien that it makes us feel normal??

if a US 0 is a british 4, wth? Are they even more weight conscious than us in North America? It must not start at a sz4 in Britain so what the heck does a size 0 or 2 look over there? And who is wearing them???

And personally I believe Nicole Ritchie to be a double zero..most of her clothes still seem to be falling right off..and if she;s a 0, I'd shudder to see a double 0 in a bikini! yuk!! She needs a "feed me" t-shirt!!

From what I understand, just as size 0 and size 00 are new inventions in the US, so is a size 4 in the UK. I thought I had read up until a few years ago, something like a size 8 was their smallest size. I could be wrong though.

I wish I had a "muffin top" like that! I thought she had a nice figure!

And Nicole Ritchie's breastbone looks really creepy!

Ye, it's a British article, from one of the daily tabloids. The meanspiritedness is, as others said, global, but i am specially familiar with the british variety having grown up there and seen all the ways in which an overweight, overtall (till I hit my teens) girls can be treated.

In adulthood I limit my exposure to the media, especially TV, and meanspirited people - they just get evicted from my life with no regrets. I work from home and can pick and choose who I deal with. For that i am profoundly grateful.

When I lived in England I remember 8 being the smallest adult size, then maybe a 6. I don;t know if that was something new or I just heard of it later on. I was wearing "adult sized clothes" from age 10 or so b/c no kids' clothes fit any more. Mainstream fashion has been a no-g- area for me for a long time. At least it saves time when shopping, as I know 90% of stores are a waste of time for me.

"concentration camp" or "famine victim" are the words that came to my mind too. I still want to call the Red Cross!

There's no way that is a size 0... I am a size 0 or 2 (depends on the brand of clothing). I have a thin bone structure but I am also a healthy 110lbs and have been eating very well for the past year. She clearly suffers from some medical issues.

I wonder what she see's when she looks in the mirror? do you think, she thinks she's fat?

Yes, that is the nature of someone who has the disorders she purportedly does. :(

I'm a Brit - 8 is the smallest in some shops, ie a US 4 or Euro 34/36. Some shops also do a 6 - that's the smallest I've seen (yet :( )

Last night at the checkout counter at Walmart, Nicole's pic was on the front of a tabloid, it said she weighs 83 lbs. Not that I give these tabloids much credibility but that doesn't sound to far off to me. If she is wearing a size 0 in that pic, it is certainly bagging off of her. I have seen stories on her lately that she is "concerned" with her weight and "trying to gain weight" but I don't know how true this is. Her dad is reported also as being very concerned.

I do feel sorry for anyone that becomes anorexic . My heart goes out to them. As an RN I have worked with anorexic teens and it is heartbreaking for them and for the people who love them. Sometimes I feel they couldn't help becoming too thin just like I couldn't help becoming too fat. Their head is simply not in tune with their body and mine wasn't either.

I know that anorexics always kind of see themselves as "fat"
But I think a lot of the ones in Hollywood, its a bit different. Brought on by different reasons,,I think there is unbelieveable pressure for ultra-thinness..

And then, it kind of becomes a competition as to who is the thinnest. I don't think Nicole looks in the mirror and sees skin and bones. Nor (like most anorexics) do I *personally* believe she sees someone fat. I think she probably thinks she looks darn good. It gets her attention, shes known now for being emaciated..god the sad part is if she DID gain 20lbs the tabloids would be showing unflattering shots and telling us she was "porking it on" or some other yucky term..so i think it's largely a lose/lose for them :( remember when Lara Flynn Boyle was skin and bones? She never ate, just drank nonfat lattes all day..

Dh used to have a thing for Portia de Rossi (the lesbian from ally mcbeal)now going out with Ellen degeneres. The longer she was on the show, the skinnier she got (being next to Calista and Lucy Liu anyone would look chubby) until i thought she was going to die. She looked dreadful. She vehemently denied having an eating disorder (yup) until she went to italy for 2 weeks and gained a much needed 15lbs..and everyone was so complimentary she decided to keep it on..thank goodness..she's a very beautiful woman when you can't count every bone.

Yeah supposedly when Richie was arrested they weighed her in at 80-something. She is ill regardless of the fact that she keeps saying she isn't disordered or drug-addicted.

And Osbournes "cankles" - ha, what a joke. They are NOT "cankles". I hate that term.

I watched HBO's THIN a few weeks ago and it made me so very sad, but what was the most SCARY part of it all was how I exhibit their behaviour. Not to that extreme but I get scared that I could end up becoming totally obsessed (which I guess I am now) and lose control. And for those who don't know what it's about - it's this documentary about an anorexic rehab clinic and the people you meet there and their obsessions. It was strange... surreal. One woman - a mother of two kept her calories below 200 a day!! you get to look at her list and she has things like "one bite of chicken 59 calories" or something like that. I always worry... ALWAYS... that I may become like that. I'm losing a healthy 2 pounds a week or so but I've become extremely particular about my calories - and maybe I should be. Anyways if you can you should watch it... you can watch it online. I can give you a link if you message me.

Most stores over here start at a size 8... the lowest sizes in any shop is a size 4 we don't have anything any smaller, and it is very rare to come across a size 4 in mainstream shops (where teens shop and what not) you get those sizes in shops like "gucci, versace, DKNY, FCUK." :dizzy: its confusing!

Well, don't get me wrong about Nicole Richie...I think she needs to eat some serious cheeseburgers for sure!! But, if you look at the photo, she's jogging and I don't care how skinny you are, if someone takes a snapshot of a woman while jogging on the downside of a bouncy gate, things are going to look limp and flabby and untoned. I saw a picture of Kate Hudson the other day in line at the grocery store and she looked similarly deflated and realized she was jogging and probably had the same effect going on.

Nicole, though, looks like that loin cloth she's wearing is about to kareen to her ankles if she doesn't watch out!!

Okay..I don't know how tall Nicole Richie is...but I weighed 100 pounds when I was 17. I am 5'6" and i wore a lose size 3....and that was 17 years ago. I did not look that skinny!! Nicole has to be a double zero to have her breast bone looking so predominate. I agree there wasn't alot of meat on my chest, but you could not see my bones thru my chest. Somebody....throw Nicole a bisquit!!!

And muffin top on Brittney Spears??? Please. I'd take a muffin top like that anyday of the week!!!! Please...let me get down to look like Brittney's muffin top!!!!!! lol!!

Yeah, I remember in ninth grade when we all thought 120 was really overweight. Now that puberty has set in, I would love to be 120!

Nicole needs help. If she doesn't get it she is going to die. That is NOT a zero, she is probably wearing children's clothing in all honesty.

My sister and niece can get that thin, when they are stressed out. They just can't eat, but they want to. I convinced them to eat small bites every half of an hour to get their appetites back, and it works for them. Neither enjoyed being that thin, and they KNEW they needed to gain weight. They were far from being anorexic, as when both are feeling fine, they can out eat a horse! :D

I wish I had inherited their genes. My mother was also very thin. Not me, I'm obese and have always had a weight problem since childhood. :(

I never realized sizes 0 and 00 were American inventions- it figures :dizzy:

My daughter wears a 00, but she is 15 yrs. old, 4'11" and has a cute figure. I always thought they started making those sizes so small juniors could buy trendy clothes without having to shop in the 'little girls' section. She can also wear a 12/14 girls, so I think the sizes are equivalent.

I think in that picture she was smaller than a size 0. I had an Aunt by marriage that was a size 0 before her child was born and she did not look like that. She looked healthy. At one time many moons ago I was a size 1-2 and looked nothing like that. Also remember there was a time Nicole was addicted to heroin and that picture could have been taken then. That was on 2003 and as far as I have heard she is clean of that now and looks somewhat healthier.

The picture is from 2006, as that bathing suit was from Summer 2006. (weird, but I'm in Fashion PR and can pick up on these small things). I highly doubt she's clean of everything, what with the recent vicodin/pot arrest. When she was on heroin she wa actually quite bigger, prob. from the bloating the drug causes.

My neighbor is a size 3 at the very most and she looks healthy and beautiful in her bikini. No doubt Nicole went to far with her weight loss for sure ..... but then I've gone to far with my weigh gain :shrug: She's a very pretty woman nonetheless.... but what really matters is how she feels about herself.

Seranab - I saw a show about Calista Flockhart (sp) and Ally Mcbeal and they said that she (Calista) got an eating disorder first and as she was slowly losing tons of weight she made the other girls get an eating disorder too. I couldn't believe it, but the other women saw themselves next to her and thought they looked huge, but in reality they looked good. It's sad

What I feel it crazy is that the bathing suit she was wearing was soo baggy. I hope now 'if' she is pregnant that she is putting on weight for the sake of the baby

I don't think she is a zero. I was a zero in high school until I was 23 and got pregnat and I weighed 118 lbs and looks perfectly healthy. I bet she was wearing a 00 and it was falling off of her. Regardless it is a stupid thing to strive for if you aren't that body type....I couldn't even get back to that size, I'm shaped differently now.

I have never been a size anything under 10/11 in the American system, and I can just get into a 16 or 18 in the UK. I cannot believe how some people, given all the money in the world, would just let themselves waste away like that. I am shocked and abashed at how horrid Nicole looks there. Her suit is too big for her, and she has no breasts whatsoever! What ever happened to the Ancient Greeks and their fondness of curvaceous women?

If you look back in history, there are no paintings or sculptures of women like Britney Spears in her hayday or even like Paris Hilton, and certainly not like Nicole. They were beautiful women who had curvy figures and I think that needs to be brought back. Right now. Then I wont have to lose anymore weight! :lol:
