alternative sources of protein

  • hi all. lately i have been reading my being vegan book and considering going back to the vegan lifestyle thats ive been dancing around for so long now. ive been going a few days lately without eating any meat and trying to find other ways of getting my protein... all that i can think of is eggs and they really gross me out but i force myself to eat them anyway. about last year i found out i was soy intolerant, so that really nixs out tofu and any other soy protein. earlier this year i had done a candida detox diet and actually started to eat vegan for a while, but i found myself getting sick from once again the lack of protein. what is a sister to do! i feel like i am missing something here like i know there is a way but i cant think of it. if anyone has any ideas please help!! thanks

  • It has been a long time since I took a stab at being vegan, but at the time I remember getting lot of help on figuring out the protein thing from "Diet for a Small Planet". I do not remember if it is heavly on the soy or not. Hmmm...there must be some other useful books out there.
  • Hmm, the soy intolerance thing makes it tricky. You could try wheat products like seitan, as well as things that at least have some protein, like beans or nuts.
  • What about other legumes? I'm not vegan currently, but I have eaten that way in the past and I do often eat meals without dairy or egg as the main protein and I rarely eat soy. Tonight's dinner was brown basmati rice and steamed broccoli topped with dal (fried onions, garlic, curry powder and pink lentils cooked into a yummy soup/sauce). Yesterday I had pinto bean/veggie burritos on whole wheat tortillas with salsa and guacamole.

Veggie bean chili, hummus, split pea soup, other lentil and bean soups are all protein rich and can be made vegan. Bean salads make quick and easy protein sources at lunch or for a snack.

You can also get almond and rice milks/ice creams.

Almond butter and cashew butter are devine on toasted bread with a bit of jam.

Whole grains have more protein than the "whites".
  • Thanks!
  • So, would drinking regular cows milk (even though it *is* mucous) give me enough protein? I have been a vegetarian in the past, but I felt run down and weak with not a lot of protien? I'm not up for the soy products either.
  • I wouldn't rely just on milk. But you should get enough protein with a variety of sources.

Heres some healthy info. Protein isn't as lacking in the vegetarian diet as people would have you believe.

Milk is mucous? I've never heard of this before...why is it considered mucous?
