Default vegetarian bbq?

Looking for a vegetarian substitute for pulled bbq... I have seen the one in the produce section that is premade with bbq sauce mixed in and I just don't see myself paying 5 bucks for it :/... any other stuff out there that I missed? I really like the gardenburger riblets and I suppose Icould shred those but they are so smokey- I would like to try something new...

I just watched an episode of Dinner:Impossible on the food network and the chef made vegetarian pulled pork (I think it was pork-I'm not 100% sure), out of seitan. You could probably check out the food network site and see if they posted the recipe. They often do.

Good luck.

There's a restaurant here in L.A. that uses jackfruit for a "pulled pork" sandwich... There may be some recipes online... though, jackfruit is a little difficult to find and even more difficult to prepare, apparently.

But man... that sandwich is WAY too good...

I'm going to attach a pic I took of it... (yeah, it was THAT good)

Here's a recipe for one made with Seitan, looks kind of like the one they made on Dinner Impossible.

I tried the Lightlife BBQ that comes in the pouch - it is pricy and I only got about 2 sandwiches out of the pouch. It was decent but I don't see paying for it again.

I've read about the jackfruit and plan on trying it. My understanding is you can just buy the canned type in water or brine and mix with your fave bbq sauce and maybe a dab of liquid smoke and simmer for a couple of hours.

Emeril Green did one as well.

I've got to find Seitan. Where can I get it?

You can buy seitan at Whole Foods but its really easy to make.

This site has some of my favorite seitan recipes:

didn't see tempeh on here. i grate up a block of tempeh and cook it on the stove, douse it with my fav bbq sauce while it's still in the pan, throw it on a tasty toasted vegan buns and voila i have bbq sandwiches for dinner. it takes all of 5 minutes.
