I have never really eaten much meat, but I would occassionally... Until recently...
I was in a very rural area for work, traveling down a main roadway.. there was a gravel truck in front of me and I noticed there was something that wasn't gravel in it. As I began to pass the truck I noticed there were dead pigs piled in the back.. to the top.. not covered. Well.. that did it for me. No more red meat or pork. I rarely eat fish or chicken, but I don't want to rule it out completely just yet. I think if I couldn't look an animal in the eyes & kill it myself then I shouldn't eat it.
Most of my friends are supportive, but some treat me like I'm crazy.. I'm the one that has to live with what I do & what (or who) I eat!
I'm sorry you had to experience that but I am glad that you have decided to reduce your meat consumption.
I never thought I could give up meat (or dairy or eggs) until I actually did it. I also can't tell you how much more I love my food. It also helps to think that by reducing your meat consumption, you are also reducing the amount of waste and pollution that is created.
Nelie is soo right! I was already a vege when I saw a truck full of sheep on the motorway in Germany, they were really cramped together and it really put me off for good. Animals are not food to me anyways.
Maybe if your friends had a similar experience they would feel the same way. Never mind them anyway, you're the one that has to live with your decisions at the end of th day, right?
It's gotten to the point that I can't come across farm animals on the road without feeling very sad. I know they're not going anyplace good.
I always hope/tell myself the farm animals are for milk. It's a bit hard when you pass the thousands of cows going down Interstate 5 in California. All I can say with certainty is that they are not any of them going into my stomach.
It was a bunch of Mrs. Grossman's stickers for me. I was about 7 and I was playing with these stickers, they were of a family of pigs, all different sizes, and I was sticking them on a piece of paper while I waited for my father to make me breakfast. When he gave it to me it was eggs and bacon, and immediately something clicked. Those cute little piggies I loved so much, I was about to eat them. Just didn't seem right. I started ordering cheese sandwiches after that and leaving meat over. When my parents divorced when I was 8 my mom announced she wanted to become vegetarian and I couldn't have been happier!

The sad thing is, that the farm animals that are used for their milk are usually treated even worse than the ones who go straight to slaughter, as they are kept and tortured for their milk until their usefulness wanes THEN they are slaughtered.

It took me such a long time to realize this. My delusions of Ms. Happy Dairy cow spending her days crazing pastures all her happy years were such wishful thinking. I had to so some serious research and thinking, by the end of it I realized vegan was the only way to go!
