I read it while I was still in England. I found it rude, crude and crass. While I am overweight, I still did not appreciate being called rude names about my size or inferred in anyway that I am a lazy this or that. While I applaud the message and the helping of animals, I could not get past the language, it was like being smacked in the face. Can you imagine somebody saying those things directly to your face ?? :( :(

Eh. I read it, and while I agree with some of the content, the delivery just struck me as overly obnoxious. I couldn't get past the fact that the authors just seemed to be trying too hard to be all edgy and different and whatnot. Plus, as with many books on the topic, it didn't really tell me anything I didn't already know...

Skinny ***** was the book that helped me to change my way of life.
Me and a friend of mine both decided to get the book and finished it within a day. The language didn't bother me at all. As someone said, it's like a tough friend of yours telling you how it really is and trying to get you to stop making excuses that are only preventing you from being healthier. We all lent out books out to other friends and they too think that it was one of the most informative books they've read. Yeah, they talk about veganism and animal cruelty, but I really didn't get that they were telling everyone that they MUST go vegan. Rather, they were just trying to get people to think about what they were eating, start doing research and start thinking for themselves. They even said to trust no one - including them. You can't take the book as gospel but it's a great book to pull information from. For some people, sugar coating the issues work, while with others need to be hit over the head - which is why everyone won't like or even agree with it. If you have some time, watch some of the videos on youtube with Rory Freedman. She is actually very sweet, and not a ***** at all. I had the pleasure of meeting her at this past years Farm Sanctuary Gala and she was great to talk with. |
I thought Skinny B**** was a heap of condescending garbage. The authors have no degrees in nutrition, they are not doctors and they advocate a "pre-packaged" wanna-vegan diet...um fresh food people...fresh food is still important. I disdained the book after they called me a f****** idiot because I eat low fat cheese. And that last page about not caring if someone is skinny or not an this is not a diet book blah blah blah? through the whole book they advocate waifism and sh** talk fat people...of course it was the last page of the book, they were trying to save face (which was too little too late and frankly, extremly transparent).
"You will crap your pants when you see how much weight you'll lose when you quit eating dairy" You'll crap your pants when you see how much weight you lose when you quit eating any major part of your regular diet. I did relish in their commentary of the low carb diet craze... |
i've never gotten past the cover to be able to want to open it. language doesn't bother me (see books by Inga Muscio) but it's the whole title and picture together that turned me off. i didn't even know the book promoted veganism--when i learned that i got an even sicker feeling in the stomach. i couldn't explain why, but last night as i was reading The Vegan Sourcebook I came across this quote that put into words how i felt about the promotion of Skinny *****. I wanted to share, so here 'tis.
"Many people have preconceived notions about what it means to be a vegetarian—that vegetarians subsist on lettuce and carrot sticks and are undernourished and emaciated—and the concept of veganism doesn’t even exist for them. I have always had difficulty with my weight and did experience a significant weight loss when I first became vegan. But becoming vegan did not resolve my food issues, like eating in response to emotion rather than hunger. I have had nonvegetarians look me up and down in disbelief when I told them I was a vegetarian. It has been very difficult coming to term’s with society’s notion of fat and thin and the ideal female body. I know some animal rights groups promote vegetarianism in their literature as a panacea for weight problems, which I think is a betrayal of activists whose bodies do not reflect this notion. I actually reached my highest body weight ever as a vegan, and I feel it is extremely important that, as vegans, we don’t try to capitalize on society’s obsession with thinness and dole out the same bill of goods the media does". –Lisa Robinson Bailey |
I absolutely love the book, and just picked it up last night to read it again, before I saw this thread was active again. It is so true, everything that they say. We can not expect to overeat and eat garbage and expect to get skinny. It's definitely 'tough love', which is in my taste. When I'm at the gym I want nothing more than to HATE my trainer during workouts. I want to hate them for pushing me so hard, and I want to feel like I would walk right out of the gym. I want to be yelled at and asked "why are you here???!!" (sorta like Jillian). Then after the workout I am always feeling incredible. It's like that language quiets my own self-criticism (and we ALL have that) and makes me focus on the present task.
That's why I love Skinny B**ch. There are no excuses with them. And I completely agree with them about the animal industry and the science behind animal proteins wreaking havoc in the body. I also like their take on alcohol. It's a very refreshing book among a pool of the same "poor you, let me hold your hand" diet books that paint us all as victims. I'm not a victim, and I'll be the first to admit I am NOT at my goal weight right now because I don't go to the gym as often as needed, and I am not as good with my eating as I should be. There are no excuses, and this book is basically telling me how it is- "You are not working out as much as you should, period." I can admit why my weight loss is very slow, and this book helped! |
I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this book... and recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind cursing now and then! Diffently a LIFE CHANGER. WONDERFUL!!!
