Protein powder

For those of us who drink protein shakes (I am a recent convert) Holland and Barratt have the Body Fortress Whey Protein for better than half price again, £9.99 as compared to £21.99, it comes in vanilla, strawberry, chocolate and banana. :cb:

The only way you'd put weight on with a protein shake is if you ate more calories than you burned in protein shake. They'd probably make you sick well before then!

All they are is a protein supplement. Protein is important for growth and repair, and this is particularly important when you're weight training since weight training produces microscopic tears in your muscle. The protein goes to help the muscle repair itself and when a muscle repairs, it grows bigger.

Bigger muscles = more fat-burning power since 1kg muscle burns 50kcal a day just being there!

So how are they different from slim fast etc? In my local bodybuilder owned chip shop they sell the same ones for dieters and body builders.

taloola 01-31-2006 08:44 AM

so i could drink them now and weight train and do tae-bo and i would gain weigh.

just muscles would repair

dont want to drink something that will make me fatter

would i have to point each drink for weight watchers.

do they interfer with fertility

They are different from Slim-Fast because Slim-Fast is a meal replacement shake, it will have carbs and fat in it. Some bodybuilders like meal replacement shakes because it's a fast "balanced" meal. Slimmers would drink 2 slim fasts a day and one "regular" meal. Whereas a body builder will eat 6 small meals a day and a couple of those might be a shake, especially after weight training.

taloola, if you are weight training and doing tae-bo then that sounds like a good exercise plan to me! If you weight train with heavy weights it's important to get enough protein otherwise your muscles will not increase in size. You will not gain weight drinking a protein shake. You have to eat more than you use to gain weight, whether it's protein or fat or carbs.

Protein is good for you because it helps repair muscles and keeps you fuller longer than a refined carbohydrate.

The only reason weightlifters use a protein shake is because it might be a bit inconvenient taking 2 chicken breasts to eat after you've been to the gym!

Again, a protein shake will not make you "fatter".

Of course you would have to point the protein shake for weight watchers, each scoop of protein powder has about 80kcals.

Protein shakes interfere with fertility as much as chicken and bacon! ie NO!

Protein powder is 85 calories a scoop and if you mix it with milk, you would have to count the calories there as well. I normally through a banana in as well, and that comes off my fruit allowance.

Protein powder and weight training won't make you gain weight. Muscle helps you burn calories and fat, you need muscle.

Are you getting confused with steroids taloola????

Thanks for the tip-off, Kylie. I got some vanilla. I'm going to try some of the recipes for protein bars, muffins, etc in the thread on the Ladies Who Lift board.

Heva2015 02-01-2006 08:06 AM

:lol3: I don't want to put you off but..... I tried Atkins for a while and used protein shakes - it took me a while to figure out that it was the protein shakes that were REALLY giving me wind. :faint:

kykaree 02-01-2006 10:29 AM

Hi Taloola, no one thinks your stupid.

We're all on different plans, a lot of us don't follow a specific plan. I don't do weight watchers so personally would have no idea how you would fit in with your plan.

You're not missing out on anything by not using protein powder, if you are getting your protein by other sources, don't worry about it!

I was only sharing the information for those of us that use it because it was half price, and we all love a bargain ;)

2frustrated 02-01-2006 10:48 AM

:o Sarah Ann I've never had that problem...

Heva2015 02-01-2006 02:50 PM

Maybe I should take the protein powder away from the mr, he is already more windy than anyone I know...
