Protein powder
For those of us who drink protein shakes (I am a recent convert) Holland and Barratt have the Body Fortress Whey Protein for better than half price again, £9.99 as compared to £21.99, it comes in vanilla, strawberry, chocolate and banana. :cb:
|
 I've ordered some strawberry! :carrot:
|
what do these protein things:?:
put weight on you to turn to muscle:carrot: im confussed :?: http://www.3fatchicks.com/weight-tra...3/129/153/.png |
The only way you'd put weight on with a protein shake is if you ate more calories than you burned in protein shake. They'd probably make you sick well before then!
All they are is a protein supplement. Protein is important for growth and repair, and this is particularly important when you're weight training since weight training produces microscopic tears in your muscle. The protein goes to help the muscle repair itself and when a muscle repairs, it grows bigger. Bigger muscles = more fat-burning power since 1kg muscle burns 50kcal a day just being there! |
So how are they different from slim fast etc? In my local bodybuilder owned chip shop they sell the same ones for dieters and body builders.
|
so i could drink them now and weight train and do tae-bo and i would gain weigh.
just muscles would repair dont want to drink something that will make me fatter would i have to point each drink for weight watchers. do they interfer with fertility http://www.3fatchicks.com/weight-tra...3/129/153/.png xx |
They are different from Slim-Fast because Slim-Fast is a meal replacement shake, it will have carbs and fat in it. Some bodybuilders like meal replacement shakes because it's a fast "balanced" meal. Slimmers would drink 2 slim fasts a day and one "regular" meal. Whereas a body builder will eat 6 small meals a day and a couple of those might be a shake, especially after weight training.
taloola, if you are weight training and doing tae-bo then that sounds like a good exercise plan to me! If you weight train with heavy weights it's important to get enough protein otherwise your muscles will not increase in size. You will not gain weight drinking a protein shake. You have to eat more than you use to gain weight, whether it's protein or fat or carbs. Protein is good for you because it helps repair muscles and keeps you fuller longer than a refined carbohydrate. The only reason weightlifters use a protein shake is because it might be a bit inconvenient taking 2 chicken breasts to eat after you've been to the gym! Again, a protein shake will not make you "fatter". Of course you would have to point the protein shake for weight watchers, each scoop of protein powder has about 80kcals. Protein shakes interfere with fertility as much as chicken and bacon! ie NO! |
Protein powder is 85 calories a scoop and if you mix it with milk, you would have to count the calories there as well. I normally through a banana in as well, and that comes off my fruit allowance.
Protein powder and weight training won't make you gain weight. Muscle helps you burn calories and fat, you need muscle. Are you getting confused with steroids taloola???? |
Thanks for the tip-off, Kylie. I got some vanilla. I'm going to try some of the recipes for protein bars, muffins, etc in the thread on the Ladies Who Lift board.
|
Thanks for the tip, the other half has been after some of that stuff for ever but I kept saying no because it costs way too much!!! He was really happy with it...like a big kid really!
|
im so stupid :?:
do u all think im stupid...  so how many point do you think a protein shake a day would be with w/watchers :chin: would that suppsatute a meal i can only have three meals a day with weight watchers so cant afford to suppstute would i have protein shake b4 wrkout or after workout. :?: http://www.3fatchicks.com/weight-tra...3/129/150/.png |
:lol3: I don't want to put you off but..... I tried Atkins for a while and used protein shakes - it took me a while to figure out that it was the protein shakes that were REALLY giving me wind. :faint:
|
Hi Taloola, no one thinks your stupid.
We're all on different plans, a lot of us don't follow a specific plan. I don't do weight watchers so personally would have no idea how you would fit in with your plan. You're not missing out on anything by not using protein powder, if you are getting your protein by other sources, don't worry about it! I was only sharing the information for those of us that use it because it was half price, and we all love a bargain ;) |
:o Sarah Ann I've never had that problem...
|
Maybe I should take the protein powder away from the mr, he is already more windy than anyone I know...
|
Kylie/Frus - I'm tempted to give this a try because I know I never eat enough protein since I hate cheese, eggs, meat etc - I try and get sufficient from cereal, nuts and pulses, but it can get a bit boring.
My question - how many grams of protein would an 85 cal scoop provide if it was mixed with skimmed milk? Thanks in advance, Janey |
Can you mix the protein power with anything except milk?
I quite fancy the idea of a protein heavy snack but can't stand the taste of milk (except in frappucinos, strangely!) I also have smoothies for breakfast sometimes in the summer- can you chuck some in that? |

I think I eat too many beans ;) |
Thanks for the heads up about the H & B protein powder. Last time I bought it (different brand) it cost me 24.99 for a tub.
I've been a big fan of protein powder since I did South Beach last summer. I realised I need a lot of protein at breakfast to keep me full. You can throw it into your smoothie mix, yes. I do that sometimes. And to answer about WW points, the powder I use is 1 point, so you add that to however much milk and fruit you add too. I tend to have vanilla protein powder with water and a half teaspoon of cocoa in the winter, and with fruit in the summer. |
Eeewww YP :p hope you were on your own
Clareh..I tried making protein shakes just with water..they were :p then I found that if I add a load of ice cubes and throw it in the blender I get a nice thick frothy "milkshake" :T not done it for months though :dunno: its a bit too cold  Janey..they all differ but it will say in the nutritional info on the label..the skimmed milk will add about 9g per cup/250ml. |
1 scoop = 19g of protein approx
I usually mix mine with milk to make a nice smoothie, or bake with it, or somethimes put it in porridge, but I usually mix it up with milk for a "meal" post kickboxing |
Hi,
Im looking to buy some protein powder for muscle repair as I have a shin splint :( but went on the H&B website and cant quite decipher which one you guys are talking about, can you tell me which brand it is you use? Thanks Mel X |
Something like Precision Engineered Whey Protein :dunno:
|
Ooops..got mine out of the cupboard yesterday and one of them expired last November  won't kill me will it? think it had about 18mths on it when I bought it  told you it had been a long time :dunno: rest are good until May I think so i'd better get using them ;)
|
It's called Body Fortress Precision Engineered Whey Protein. It's a huge tub!!!
I doubt out of date protein powder would kill you Cat, but if it does, don't blame me!!! |
Is it possible to drink too many protein shakes in a day? How many do ya'll have a day? I had 3 today and think its too many. Was thinking of having about 2?
Is it good for you? Or at least not bad. All my friends keep telling me its bad. I dont do overly heavy weights, but i do them 4 times a week and my cardio is swimming 2 hrs a day if possible. Any help is welcomed :) |
I would only have one day personally, and get the rest of my protein from other sources. meat, eggs, legumes have other important vitamins and minerals that you won't get from shakes.
|
I only have one a day too.
They're not bad for you but they're not the BEST source of protein, they are just a convenient source of protein. I usually have them when I need a meal away from home (which is just about every day!) |
