The only time I've been near an NHS gym was when I was getting physio for my broken ankle, I'm not sure how easy it is to get into them other times.
I love my private gym. The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't have many classes, just circuit training on a Monday evening. I'm half considering starting to go to another gym as well to start kickboxing (as I can pay per class there instead of a membership, and it's at the end of my road), but that might just be a bit excessive :o I need to get Frus to kick my backside to make me look into the kickboxing properly rather than just thinking oh, that might be nice... |
My gym is the best ever! It's a Virgin one and has a pool, kids pool, spa, sauna, steam room, solarium, cafe bar + internet, fully equipped gym and more classes than you can shake a stick at. The good thing is you can join on a month to month basis for £45 a month - so you're not tied into any long contracts. I guess some people think £45 a month is expensive - but really it's only £11 a week which is the price of a Domino's pizza!
Hope you have luck finding a reasonably priced gym Sarah. Love Amanda x |
When I say NHS the one round here isn't at the hospital or anything it is just for people for an alternative to drugs and therapy for depression etc which is a good idea. I'm sure I could go to my local one but I've never asked.

Hi all. Joy of joys have found a "cheap" gym. £2.00 per year membership and £1.00 per hourly session. There is a slight problem..... it is fundamentally for people who have had heart surgery and are recovering for their ops. The youngest member is 75 and the oldest 95. You are only allowed to do 2 minutes on each machine (2 minutes, I am not sure I could hack the pace! ) and the gym instructor looks around 80 himself. He does not own a pair of trainers and walks around in his brogue shoes! He even had the cheek to ask me if I wanted to join. Please someone tell me a) I do not look that old b) do I look like I have had heart surgery c) Is it time to dye my hair?. You have to take your blood pressure before and after exercising! At least I would be the youngest there I suppose! I will find a cheap, affordable gym if it kills me!

 Sounds a fun gym. :chin:
|
 sarah that sounds like fun! Go show the crumblies up!
Yp go kickboxing it is wicked ;) :rollpin: It really does you good to mix up the cardio - I swear my last 1 1/2stone came off because of the kickboxing! (I was dieting too, but I'd been doing that for ages with no effect!) Your running will help with the fitness and things, you just have to master the punches and kicks! |
Sarah that gym you found sounds fantastic ! All that top man totty working out in their Y's. :o and at that price you can't complain.
|
sarah have you tried the big ymca on coburg street or the kitto centre?
|
Sarah, that gym you've found sounds perfect - you'll be the fittest one there by a mile, and you won't have to wait long for any piece of equipment to become available! What a result, and a bargain too!
Nice to see some new faces around here - been AWOL too long myself and all these newbies to catch up with!   Janey |
Forgot to add a comment re NHS gyms - I work at the James Paget hospital in Great Yarmouth, and we have a gym on site - nice and cheap but no pool, and open to staff, patients and the general public.
Only problem was, when I went to look around a whole load of sick-looking people were coughing and spluttering all over the equipment and I didn't join in case I caught some kind of dreaded lurgy from all the expirated snot and coughed up chest crud :barf: :tired:  ...it sort of put me off! I think I'd rather pay an arm and a leg and go to a fit person's gym instead! All the best, Janey :D |
actually that might not be a bad idea derriford has a wicked gym and its not full of sick people
|
Ugh! :p I notice that everytime I come home Janey (usually @ xmas) everyone seems to have some sort of dreaded lurgy  and I always end up catching something and being ill for a month or more :rollpin: i'm never ill over here..its rare for me to catch a cold :) but i'm guaranteed to catch one there

Hi all
I do not know which is worse, the posh gym with all the thin, beautiful, tanned people or the one where they all look like they are goind to die any minute! I have decided not to join the gym but am going to go to hubbies classes. I know all the girls there (and they are all nice) I will not have to worry about giving anyone mouth to mouth to keep them alive and the best thing of all is that I won't have to pay. I live near Dartmoor which is beautiful so we shall get out walking at the weekend and take in some lovely fresh air too! I did belong to a very posh gym in Plymouth which cost me and hubbs £99.00 per month joint membership but at the mo we can't afford it. You never know if my six numbers come up tomorrow night I might buy the gym! Joy of joys managed to get the referall paperwork sent through from the slimming club so hopefully real soon I should be able to get back to slimming club. Trying to go solo just seems to be such a hard slog. Hope you all have a lovely healthy weekend
lol :moo: aka Sarah |

First weigh day yesterday!
Hello everyone. Hope you all had a nice weekend. Mine was ok just goes to quick. Was my first weigh day yesterday and joy of joys I have lost 3lb. I was quite impressed with that as I have not really started following any plan yet. Have just cut back on the naughty things and oh boy must have been eating a lot of those naughty things! Went out for a walk at the weekend but it was so cold! I think our summer has been and gone. Never mind.
I am so chuffed about my 3lb loss and am hopefully seeing the doc this week about my slimming club referal so will let you know how I get on! :moo: aka Sarah |
