well done kyk...........what is an underwriter?

kykaree 05-09-2005 04:55 PM

I work for a health insurer, and basically an underwriter makes a risk assessment of a potential member, and determines what conditions we will exclude from their policy. The underwriter is also available to help people who currently do the job I do now (answering members queries and authorising their medical treatment) make fair decisions about how those exclusions are applied.

For example I am underwritten for asthma as I have had it since a baby. Therefore the company won't pay out for asthma because I knew about it before I took out the insurance. If I was to want to claim for something related to my lungs/chest, the underwriter would assess whether I could make a claim and what medical information I may need to supply to rule out a risk.

It will be a lot more technical and challenging than the work I currently do.

BIGGIRL27 05-09-2005 05:46 PM

KYK Congrats!!! sounds awesome!!!

2frustrated 05-10-2005 04:40 AM

Hello girlies! Kyk, that job sounds really great! Hope you get a whopping pay rise! ;)

I've just found out, in an e-mail that one of my ex-boyfriends (a guy I once wanted to marry) is married! :yikes: That bites! I'm not sure what's more upsetting, that he didn't marry me, or that he's got married before I have!

It shouldn't hurt after not seeing him for 4 years should it? I mean, we're grownups now! Anyways I have him to thank for my weightloss - all his fault, he told me he didn't like me big (and you ask why I wanted to marry him... well because he was so nice about it! :lol3: ). SO when I was dumped, I went all out running and healthy eating and the like, so HE started it! I have that to thank him for. I'm going to e-mail him a picture, then he'll get divorced and come a running! I don't think! :joker:

Ah anyway, who needs him, I have my own luvverly fiance, and I have a BIG electronics project to finish! So on with it gal! YEEEEEEHAAAAAA!

BIGGIRL27 05-10-2005 05:05 AM

frus you got the idea - the best revenge is to keep going, meet your goal and maintain! hey maybe you will run into him one day and he'll swoon at the site of ya!

I have some employment agency appts this afternoon. I'm excited! Ready to get back to work! but oh do I hate taking those stupid tests! Anyway, wish me luck girls.. I'm off to do my exercise and tame this nest growing atop my head lol

MadamDotty 05-10-2005 05:35 AM

All the best for this afternoon Tamara, those tests are a pain, you never perform as well when you're nervous.

Frus - it's always weird when a blast from the past comes back & haunts you. Even if we're happy now & settled, you can't help but wonder what if, and also why are they happy & settled, surely they should still be pining for you and thinking what a dreadful mistake they'd made (you never know he might be thinking it!)

2frustrated 05-10-2005 06:09 AM

haha, yeah he should be pining!

BigGirl, good luck for your job tests!

Thanx girlies for your support! I just feel silly talking about it to my mates cos I haven't seen him for 4 years and they all know how happy I am now! BONKERS!

kykaree 05-10-2005 09:27 AM

Good luck BigGirl, I hate all those tests too, did millions of em when I first came here. You could always come to BUPA!!!!

Frus, I've had things like that too, and it messes up your head a bit, coz you feel jealous, but you wouldn't want them back, but a bit of you can't help thinking "what if"

I thought moving countries would be really good for that, but lo and behold was in Manchester one day and ran into one of my old boyfriends in the Triangle I just couldn't believe it, neither could he!!!! He had kids!!!! As well as wifey....Argggghhh!!!!! Really weird.

Ooh my bruv turned up today with a dvd rewriter for my computer :cb: :cp: :hat: :gift: he made me take the computer case off, :tantrum: I'm not used to such things, ok it was just a few screws but I kept dropping them inside the computer. :dizzy:

BIGGIRL27 05-10-2005 05:50 PM

:thanks: Thanks Guys! I survived the torture of taking tests to prove I really can type and open a Word document! Frus, is BUPA hiring? Can you sneak me in thru the backdoor??? just kidding! lol

I had an excellent on plan day today, but I think my true accomplishment was not stepping onto my new talking scale... ah.. she's lovely... :goodscale she remembers your weight last time and actually announces how much you've lost! Come to think of it, if that dreadful day ever comes, she will announce gains too... hm. I will have to make sure that NEVER happens! Aside from the possibility of becoming utterly obsessed, why is it best to weigh in only once a week?

momasita 05-10-2005 06:12 PM

Love the supersize me song! I'm going to load it on my mp3 player for my workouts. What motivation!

MadamDotty 05-11-2005 05:00 AM

Hi Tamara

I think the idea to only weigh yourself once a week is because your weight can fluctuate daily and shows gains and losses which aren't correct e.g. if you ate a lot the day before, didn't drink much, etc can all affect the scales, by only doing it weekly it just gives a more accurate picture as any real weight lost will show. It still means that you can't accept the scales as gospel, even weighing weekly - but we all do

momasita - what is the supersize song? If it's motivating, then I should be listening to it!!!

kykaree 05-11-2005 05:18 AM

Bupa are desperate for staff, if you want to work in Manchester that is. I can get you an application form if you want!!!!!! You could join our staff gym and Hannah and Paul could nag you, I mean help you like they've helped me!!!!!!!

madam Dotty is right (as always) your weight fluctuates so much every day, that weighing every week should give you an average. Some ladies here weight every day then calculate their average to find out how much they have lost during the week. I personally weigh once a week, but if I have shown a gain and I think its wrong, I will weigh in two days later. That happened to me a week or two ago, I weighed in on monday and it showed a gain, and I really didn't think that was right. As it turned out I was really bloated, and two days later it showed a loss.

Like everything with this weight loss caper - do what works for you!!!

Oh I did a stupid thing today!

I'd finished at college and I had to walk into town to buy a battery holder from Maplin, so I walked up to town, then I remembered I had something to email myself from the college network, so I decided to walk back to college before getting the bus home, rather than getting the bus from town.

So I got to college, couldn't swipe into the computer room for some reason, had to get a technician to let me in, then I got on the computer, checked my emails, replied to the married ex (Oh I'm SOOOO happy for you etc etc! ) then came home. Without emailing the document I needed! I was about 10 minutes into my bus ride when I remembered! I am an Idiot! And I've just got home now! I'm pooped! Been at college since half 8 this morning! :tired:

Just thought I'd let you know...

Dippy Chip 05-11-2005 04:29 PM

Frus..it's amazing how those married-Ex's can make you forget things. I ran into one of my ex's one day and went to pot so much that I literally forgot where I parked the car - it took me two hours to find it again!! :o And yet it was me that dumped him....but I was still flustered!

Just come back from the first of my 6 pre-birthday meals. I was dreading the damage to my diet, but I did really well, I think. A had two diet cokes, and for my meal I had a chargrilled cherry tuna steak with a black olive tapenade on a bed of home made tomato passata, served with boiled new potatos (I had three small ones) and a side salad which I ate naked (by which I mean the salad was undressed, not me!! ) I didn't have a starter or dessert (even though they had homemade chocolate mousse served with hand-made vanilla icecream!!!), yet I came away feeling satisfied and contented - this is a victory, I think!

Now I just have to behave myself for the other 5 meals!! I'll let my hair down a bit on my actual birthday and birthday-eve as I'm going away for four days for high jinks in Brighton......I may even be a  and have wine and a dessert!...but I intend to be good for all the other meals. I may be fast approaching fat-and-forty, but I don't intend to be fat-and-forty-one!!! :p :D

Kind regards, Janey :smug:
