Talking Did anyone watch 'My Big Fat Diet' last night on C4

Hi,

Did anyone else watch My Big Fat Diet with Anna Richardson Last night?? What did you think??

I was shocked about what is seen as a portion or 100g of food..ie: half a tiny cupcake( containing 200 calolries)!!

And also about how the supermarkets get us to buy more food! Especially with the bogof's. I can definetley see how they can contribute to weight gain in this country. Why does the Watchdog allow this kind of practice to continue?

Love to know what you thought?

I only caught the last half hour of this but like you, was totally shocked at the strategies the supermarkets use to make us buy more food!!!!

It has made me totally more aware of marketing ploys and determined not to be sucked in by them!

It made me think that perhaps there is one big money making business out there - supermarkets use tricks to get us to buy more food, therefore we eat more, get bigger and then are sucked in to paying out more for diet products, clubs, pills, books, magazines etc. Maybe cynical of me, but that's how it made me feel.

I really hated to 'two-week-drop-a-dress-size' thing. I thought the message that all calories were equal be they from cooking oil or a small glass of wine, was, at best, ill advised. The daily menu suggestion, which started off with a sausage sandwich and finished will a small bowl of pasta was stupid and unhealthy and at least as damaging as anything that the supermarkets are doing.

I'd forgotten just how radical the message that healthy eating is for life and not just until you fit in to a frock is, maybe I've been spending too long on here!

This pretty much summed up my thoughts on the program.

It's just another quick fix diet show.. not a way to change your opinions on food.

Have to say I wasn't impressed. I also thought the menus weren't very healthy.

I wasn't impressed either. It seemed gimmicky, far too focused on the quick-fix and the speed of loss rather than gradually introducing better habits for the long-term.

Out of curiosity has anyone on here ever dropped a dress size after 6lbs? I heard the presenter say that towards the end of the programme and was surprised because it takes me at least 18!

adding a bit of spice to the mix here....but (although i didnt see the program) I can see what people mean when there are loads of offers on for foods etc in store, I have a thing for crisps and when they do the whole 24 packs for £2 im a gonna but then I realise that I dont have to do it.
I have come to realise that i simply cannot have all the things that I want to have and so one make sure that ive eaten before i shop and two take a list and a budget and stick to it (sometimes only taking cash and no cards).

I can honestly say that I do believe that we are ushered in one direction or another by offers etc but isnt that part of the whole challenge of losing weight...

Just caught some of this. It is SO annoying. These so-called "Diet Divas" that have been on every diet going didn't know there are more calories in pork chops than in chicken??? It's complete and utter patronising bull and has made me quite irritated.

OH MY GOD if you choose 100 calories worth of vegetables rather than 100 calories of biscuits you get soooo much more what a revelation....

Do you think ANYONE is sat at home thinking this is inspiring and new information??

Lora - nope, dropping six pounds has never taken me down a dress size. Takes at least a stone to do that, for me anyway!

Wish I could drop a dress size with every 6lbs I lost. Takes me about a stone to go down a size.
Watched the second episode this evening - not exactly showing people how to lose weight properly.

I agree with all that has been said above. I've never even considered dieting to 'drop a dress size'. It is another gimmicky show. I don't take the dieting thing seriously on this show. Whats the point? You will just put all the weight back on when you eat normally again.

However, it has shown me the tatics that supermarkets use to get us buy more food. I think I was aware before I watched the show. But now I will be conscious of the fact when I do my weekly shop. I actually learned something from it. One part of the show pointed out how much (in quantity) unhealthy items are on offer, compared to the healthy items by laying it out on two large tables. It did shock me. The answer to this was that large confectionary companies can afford to sell cheaper, than the farmers, who as we all know struggle at the best of times.

Also, it has shown me how food companies 'twist' the labelling on products, so it looks like thier products contain less fat/calories. (BTW I don't 'do' counting calories) I make all our meals from scratch so it's not really an issue for me. But it's the point that they try to make something seem less unhealthy just to sell more of it, and in turn makes it more likely consumers will buy and eat more of it. Which for me is disgusting. And they are allowed to get away with it time and time again.

It's defo opened my eyes up to the facts. And also the greed and inconsideration of these large companies.

DAYONEAGAIN- no I wouldn't say this was inspiring..but it was new information to me. Or at least, again, just made me more conscious.

It's a thumbs up from me

I agree that a quick fix diet isn't the solution to losing weight, but I suppose that we should remember that these 'diet-diva' women who aren't very clued up on food at all, are probably a fair representation of a large chunk of the country that are trying to lose some weight. A lot of people really don't know the first thing - this includes people that have tried to diet time and time again. Hopefully the 'revelations' are helping some people! I'm sure a lot of teenagers/older children will watch it too, and they probably haven't learned about this stuff yet. (I totally know what you're all saying though)

In fact, on Generation XXL the other night:

"What do you know about healthy eating?"

"I know about Carbon Dioxide"

(Says it all, really!)
