Fitness DVD Discussion

It's that time of year again where all the fitness DVDs come out. Which ones have you bought, and which ones have you enjoyed? The rest of the forum seems to be obsessed with Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred, but you can't get that over here unless you have a multiregion DVD player.

I personally bought Davina's Super Body Workout, Ministry of Sound Pump It Up Aeroburn, Clubland Work It Out and the Tracy Anderson Method: Dance Cardio Workout. I've done the first two so far: the Ministry of Sound one is pretty good but the choreography is tough, and I did Davina's today and loved it, but I feel so stiff now!

Apparently the Mel B one is good, anyone tried this?

cooperistic 01-06-2009 01:45 PM

I love love the Breakthru fitness DVDs, particulary their pilates ones. The two women who do the DVDs (I think their names are Michelle and Tracy) are just really likeable and encouraging, I think that's really important with exercise videos.

But if you are looking for a hardcore muscle sculpting exercise, buy their Pilates sculp DVD, I promise, you'll discover muscles you never knew you had!!

georgiad 01-06-2009 02:24 PM

Hmm, I've not actually seen them in shops, I'll need to take a look.

AngelD 01-06-2009 03:48 PM

I'm with everyone else on the 30 Day Shred. It's really good. I searched around on the internet for the unlocking code for my DVD player so I now have a multi-region DVD player!!:carrot:

I've got Davina's first two DVDs which are pretty good. I also like doing gym ball workouts so I have a couple of DVDs by Lucy Knight.

I bought the Claire Richards one this year so will you know how that one is when I get round to doing it.

I heard Mel B had done one but I find she can be a bit loud and annoying so I didn't bother looking at that one.

georgiad 01-06-2009 03:57 PM

Claire Richards? Is that the girl from Steps? I saw her picture on the DVD cover and was like :o she has lost a LOT of weight and is looking fantastic! But I was never really a big Steps fan so...

They should bring out a fitness DVD set to rock music.

"Sweatin' to Metallica" lol

AngelD 01-06-2009 04:31 PM

Yeah she is the one from Steps. I loved their music so thats the main reason I got it. I didn't know she had put on so much weight till I saw it in the shop.

A rock DVD would be good.

redgirl09 01-07-2009 04:03 PM

I am a HUGE fam of the ten minute solution dvds, I have a couple and a couple more on order!I walked 8 miles to work and back on monday and hurt my foot so i am resting it til the weekend which is when my "Dirty Dancing workout dvd should arrive!woohoo!

Vahla 01-07-2009 05:01 PM

I bought the first Ministry of Sound DVD about 4 years ago and have only just done it for the first time as my old house had bad flooring and I love it! Maybe I'll buy the new one after a while but for now I'm sticking with this one.

MissVitality 01-07-2009 06:35 PM

I own a LOT of fitness DVDs! (Over 30!) When I first started losing weight and exercising, I felt too self-conscious to go to fitness classes so invested in quite a few and the collection has just kept growing!

I now go to 7-8 fitness classes a week and prefer working out in a group environment. I think my neighbours prefer that I do this too, LOL! I am now clearing some of them out with the aim of donating some to a charity shop.

Some of the best ones I have (which I will be holding onto!) are Davina McCall's, Beverley Callard's (although a bit cheesy - lots of old style aerobics) and the Ministry of Sound Pump it Up DVDs. I have found the fitter I get, some of the DVDs I invested in at first just don't do anything for me and I hardly feel as if I have had a workout e.g Tracy Shaw Slim and Salsacise.

I guess it depends on what style of exercise you enjoy - I have some dance based ones too - Jennifer Ellison, Martine McCutcheon and Dirty Dancing which are all really good too.

muppetmummy 01-09-2009 12:18 PM

My faves are the first pump it up from the ministry of sound, Davinas' power of 3 and the Nell McAndrew ones, I think you have to be reasonably fit for these those as they're very energetic.

I normally start with Rosemary Conley if I haven't exercised for a while as they're easier :D

anastasia 01-09-2009 01:39 PM

see i only have the rosemary conley ones which i love and even they aren't real copies! (ahem). i've treid yoga and kick boxing before but i just couldn't get in to them. i do have the strictly come dancing one and it's impossible unless you're a dancer anyway cos you can't see their feet.

arielblue11 01-19-2009 02:24 PM

My favourites are the Ministry of Sound Pump It Up ones - I own the first one and the latest (Aeroburn). I've always loved my Tae-Bo boxset too - they are hardcore but get results! Nell McAndrews are good, I mainly use the resistance/toning sections which are fantastic, rather than the cardio bits as I find them a little boring.

LucyFM 01-19-2009 03:07 PM

I bought the Davina Superbody one and the MOS Aeroburn ones recently but found the workouts I chose from them a bit complicated. Plus I only like to do them when my boyfriend is out because he'll laugh at me!

MissVitality 01-19-2009 04:59 PM

I have just bought the Davina Superbody one but still to try it - hope it's as good as her previous efforts.

I have heard good reports about the DVD brought out by Mel B.

LucyFM 01-20-2009 04:13 PM

Just done the Ministry of Sound Aeroburn one. Was really good, although the male trainer has a really annoying voice, I kept having to stop because I was laughing at how camp he is!

I would recommend it though, I can feel that familiar muscle stretch already! Plus it was actually really fun!

dilleight 01-21-2009 05:52 AM

I like Tae Bo especially as I can only motivate myself to do half an hour at the moment! Kate's Cardio Combat is pretty effective although it's a little boring. Zoe Lucker's is rubbish and so is Penny Lancaster's Ultimate Body Workout. Kathy Smith kick boxing is pretty good. Micah's pilate's isn't bad.

muppetmummy 01-21-2009 07:57 AM

I did Davinas' power of 3 the day before yesterday and I can still feel it in my legs!

I attempted MOS pump it up yesterday but had to give up after the warm up and switch to a Rosemary dvd as I'm too unfit to keep up!:o

TracyP 01-22-2009 05:09 AM

Does anyone do the Natalie Cassidy one? My sister swears by it, but then shes fit and skinny anyway. I'm finding the lunges very difficult. Can anyone recoomend an easy one for a beginer please?
Thanks!

muppetmummy 01-22-2009 06:02 AM

I think Rosemary Conley is fab for beginners as she has exercises that you can do at different levels depending on your fitness :D

Amy Toria 02-01-2009 06:08 AM

I just bought the Claire Sweeny WW DVD and its ok, but she is just soooo fake its unbelievable!

PhatPhoenix 02-01-2009 12:33 PM

I just got Colleen's cheesy disco fest and that's great fun.

Have to prize me off the Wii Fit with a crowbar though since it came on Friday! It's fantastic fun!

sh3l5 02-04-2009 04:45 PM

I swear by natalie cassidy i lost all my weight with this dvd!....

Acb 02-13-2009 01:23 PM

I've got too many fitness DVDs! I used to get one each time I needed to buy something from Amazon and had to spend a few more pounds to get free delivery! My favourites'd be.. "Hotpants Workout" - which is really fun after the third time when you know where to put your legs properly, "Jordan's Workout" - her voice gets on my nerves but the trainer's quite good and the moves are kickboxing-eque, and Claire Sweeney's one which is simple but effective (I do agree with you, Amy, she's annoyingly fake in the introductions!).

Davina's workouts are much too hard!

PhatPhoenix 02-13-2009 05:27 PM

Hotpants is one of my all time favourites. However camp he is, I still fancy that choreographer.

peacock 2 02-16-2009 11:06 AM

Sadly there is not enough room in my one room to do anything like that - plus I live in a tower block on 13th floor and would get complaints if I started thumping around...

Angel D - this intrigues me about a code - I went a got a multi DVD specially cos I have a number of foreign films. It is quite hard getting multiDVD (I got one from Amazon) and I am wondering what happens when we go digital.....

dilleight 02-26-2009 07:22 AM

Ministry of Sound Pump it Burn it Lose it is good.

elusivekoolaid 03-03-2009 10:26 AM

I have the tae bo which is really good. I also have Carmen Electra's Fit to Strip ;) . I just bought yogalates which is alright but has a lot of floorwork. (DUH it's yoga!)

Best idea ever!

I've tried a davina one (can't remember which!) and found her extremely annoying so i didn't do it again! lol
I want to start doing a dvd in my room, i walk a lot currently and would like some extra exercise in the comfort of my own room, i might try some tae-bo as it's been mentioned a couple of times!

justjudith 03-08-2009 06:12 PM

Jenny....

Can you tell me hwo you find Carman Electra? I've got one of her dvd's but only watched 5 mins as I feel I have to be more fit to be fit to stip! I love the concept at any rate.

I use/d Leslie Sansone's Walk Away The Pounds dvd's. You don't need a lot of room .... you can be any level ... and no complicated moves..... my kinda dvd.... pity about the hairstyles!

I love the dirty dancing workout dvd, it is so much fun, but hard work. Plus the female instructor is sooo annoying, she really pisses me off, I skip the dances taught my her.

HeatherEljohari 05-10-2009 08:07 PM

the lunges kill my legs! When I did the 30 minute shred. I was actually in more pain from the dvd than from going to the gym. Hmmm. LOL

BritinNJ 05-11-2009 03:23 AM

I have the Biggest Loser one, can't think what the title is though, there are three levels and I decided to get back into action last week and start with a good workout. It nearly killed me, I was in tears at one point cos I found it SO hard....but it's only 20 mins, you sweat like a :oink: and my muscles only stopped screaming today and I felt so good when it was over...I'm going to do it again tomorrow :)

cat90 05-17-2009 02:44 PM

hahaha  chris you're gonna kill yourself :lol3: take it easy ;)

BritinNJ 05-18-2009 07:28 PM

I've done it again, no tears this time, but it felt really good when he told me we were all done, I was a happy bunny...a hot, sweaty, achy one, but a happy bunny, nonetheless :)

stef 05-23-2009 04:33 AM

I'm a bit of a collector.

I used to be able to say it was for work - I was an aerobics instructor!

Now I am lecturing I don't teach class any more, so I have no real excuse to buy any! But I still look :D

I have a varied collection and really enjoy mixing and matching them during the weeks, when I can exercise!

I do 10 - 20 mins of:
belly dancing - great for flexibility and toning, and just getting back in touch with my body, it feels great!
Cardiokickboxing - powerful and aerobic and great fun.
Yogalates - mixing up that breathing, stretching and toning
Yoga - for the non workout days

I also have a swiss ball and resistance bands which I use according to me - bands were my favourite class! Stick the pod on loud and go sweat it out!

My only problem is that I start off too hard, like I was still able to do it all! If I was a client I would be able to write a really good, slowly progressive timetable. But I just can't seem to do it for myself. So I tend to do one or two sessions and the the ME/CFS kicks in and I can't do a thing for days/weeks :(

I'm having a look at the 10 minute workouts and others with short sections - does anyone have any suggestions??

EmmaJCC 06-04-2009 06:21 AM

I like the Davina one although she is a bit daft at times with her face pulling!
