Needing some help/suggestions!

  • My husband had to take me to the ER sunday evening as I was in extreme pain. I was diagnosed with having a severe case of hemorroids(not sure on the spelling). Anyways he stayed home the past two days from work to help me as I was struggling just to walk and it was nearly impossible for me to get up or even to the bathroom on my own. I was prescribed Tylenol 3 to help with the pain and have been using Preperation H. I also was advised by the doctor to start taking Metamucil. Oh yeah...and drinking tons and tons and tons of water. I also have been soaking in warm water several times a day.
I am soo irregular when it comes to going to the bathroom. It is not abnormal for me to sometimes go a week without having a bowel movement. Usually I won't go for such a long time and then when I do I will end up going 3 times in a day. This is obvious the trigger for my current situation and I now realize that I need to make some changes and try to introduce more fiber in my diet.
Just wondering how exactly go about doing this...what are some high fiber foods? Does anyone know of a healthy high fiber cereal that I could eat for breakfast?? Any good snack suggestions that would be easy and high in fiber??
Any help/suggestions or a handy site with some information would be muuuuch appreciated so that I could get this under control and never have to experience this pain again.
    Thanks a million

  • I'm sorry to hear about your situation.

There is alot of cereals that say "high fiber" on the front of the package.

And I believe they also make a fiber tablet you can take. Make sure you check with the dr. and he should be able to let you know how much fiber you need in your diet.
The National Cancer Institute recommends between 25 to 35 grams of fiber intake per day.

You can also take Metamucil or something similar.

Here is a couple site I found:

    http://www.healthcalculators.org/calculators/fiber.asp

    http://www.dietsite.com/dt/Diets/Eat.../Fiber/Dietary Fiber.htm

    Good Luck!
  • Eating a lot of fruit and vegetables help me and use whole grain cereal. There is a high fiber cereal that I used to buy. I think it was Fiber one. Apples are a good fruit and peaches. Both are juicy and help to keep you regular.
Good luck and I hope you soon feel better.

  • KL life.... Sorry to hear about your situation.... I never had that particular problem but be sure to talk it out thoroughly with the doc.. I have taken metamucil... its a lot better these days than it used to be, I like benefiber a lot better, you just mix it with yogurt or any drink..... are medications you take part of the problem, I find some meds can interefere with bowel actions too....I know you can get psylium husk at a natural food store also, even try some ground flax seeds, they do a wonderful job for me, I also mix it with a little yogurt or make muffins.. have a wonderful recipe for Cranberry Flax seed muffins.... I like the spoon size shredded wheat n bran by Post or look at Kashi brand cereals, they are great.... let us know how things are going.... India
  • Kari - I suffer from the same problem. My doctor told me I could safely take Senokot everyday is need be. It is much better than the damage caused from constipation. I also try to drink a gallon of water a day and eat a well balanced diet. However, even these measures don't seem to help. I have also gone for colonic cleansing, which seemed to help.....
  • Well I am doing a bit better today however it's still painful for me to sit/stand up. I am terrified to sit on the toilet as this gives the most discomfort however Im starting to get nervous because I still haven't had a BM since Sunday. I don't take any medications other than birth control and I haven't always had this problem while on it so I don't think that would have anything to do with it.
I have been eating fruits, started taking metamucil, and drinking TONS of water since sunday. I don't know if this is helping other than the fact I have to go to the bathroom every half an hour or more. I have held off on the Tylenol 3 that the doctor gave me...of course it is nice for the pain but a major side effect is constipation and I don't need any extra help with that.
Thank you everyone for you concerns and suggestions.
    Have a wonderful day!
