Key one: Right Thinking
Sherri...This is for you and if anyone else is reading the book and would like to add to this, please do. It is a very good chapter.
He has a test which determines your Weight Locus of Control (WLOC). Internal, External or Chance. If the test indicate you are internal, that means that you accept responsibility for your weight. External means that you think your weight depends on other influences in your life. Chance simple means that you don't believe that you have any control over your weight at all. It's just the way things are.
He goes on to tell about our thoughts, that we can choose our thoughts. Our thoughts can work against us and the bottom line is that: "Your thoughts powerfully program you". If your self-talk is filled with things like, "I'll never reach my goal", or "I hate the way I look in the mirror", those thoughts will work against you.
The question to ask your self is are these thoughts true? If you have been told things like, "you'll always be fat," or " can't you do anything right", ask your self "Is this true or false?" "Can you prove it?" Where is exhibit A, B, or C that you are a failure? Then start thinking about all the successes that you have had in life that you may not have even thought about. Start challenging your self-talks and expose the fictions and the falsehoods. If the thought is true, start dealing with it and if its not true, kick it OUT!
the next step is to start restructuring your thinking. And he gives a table to show how to change self-defeating thinking into Right Thinking. Some examples are:
Self-defeating thinking...I will not succeed
Right thinking .....No matter what happens, I'll stay the course. If I do what is required, I will succeed.
Self-deating thinking....I've missed too many exercises classes, I'll just quit.
Right thinking......Quitting will get me nowhere. I'll analyze my schedule and make exercise a time-protected priority.
This one is pipe dreaming
self-defeating thinking.....I'm going to lose five pounds this week.
Right thinking.....I'll stick to my program, a day at a time. Whatever I lose will be a positive.
There is more, but I hope this gives you a idea of what he deals with in Key one: Right Thinking
Key two is: Healing Feelings....and I think it is going to be good also.
