Hiya Red and Curly - I see your little egg lights glowing so you are still here I guess.
Red - that pilates exercise you describe is one that we do in Body balance class. It works the stomach muscles and the mid to lower back. From there we move into an exercise where one alternatively lifts both legs and then both arms and chest. Sort of a slow rocking motion. The idea is to rise up from either end in a slow controlled movement while keeping the belly muscles anchored and tight. The 'Bow' in yoga can achieve a similar rocking motion. DB2 actually asked me to take him to Gambling Anonymous last Sunday which I did after I fed him - he is looking very thin and weedy at the moment. It's a horrible addiction that breaks up many lives. Anyway, although the 'experts' tell me that I can't control him or force him to do anything, a good yell once in a while clears the air and seems to work with this one. I'm not a psychological mumbo jumbo person - I tend to tell it as I see it. Hope that little comment doesn't upset too many of our group, but I was brought up on the 'Get Over IT' theory and still work that way. Enough already. Back on track today. Off shortly to clean the rest of the kitchen and get some breakfast before tackling the next bit of the plan. Maybe I will even do it the other way round. |
Hi Shad, yeah, I'm still here. You seemed to have come and gone. I was up a bit earlier than usual because of the cat crying. I'm worried about her and may cancel riding to stay home and also so I can get these stories finished for sure. Riding these days really knocks me out as we're doing a lot of work on the bit. My back still hurts from whatever contortions I put myself through that it wasn't used to. I have a pilates book but don't like the descriptions in it. I saw a neat one in the bookstore but don't want to spend money to get it. Perhaps I will do what I did last time, read a description, then go upstairs to the gym and try it out while I still remember it. The bookstore is under the gym and I often stop in there before easing into the gym. It's all this rocking stuff and little movements that I don't like about pilates. The breast stroke one at least had some bigger movements that took my mind off the wiggling stuff, though it was still working the muscles. I know pilates is good for dressage so I should really get doing it.
I have always been interested in psychology, but I understand what you mean by the "mumbo jumbo." I think people often make excuses in the name of terms and ideas, and in lieu of, like you said, "getting over it" and "just doing it." Then they use terms and other such pyschobabble as a smokescreen, throwing around terms instead of getting to business. It's a matter of balance, knowledge (at least textbook knowledge) AND application I think. I, too, am more action-oriented, but I think insight into what lies behind actions is essential to change. Then again, the behaviorists (I believe it's them) say doing the corrected action is good enough, like smiling and feeling happier kind of thing. I suppose most depends on wanting to do something. If you don't really want to do something, perhaps understanding your motives is the first step toward change. Everyone and every aspect of a problem is different. It's good to have a whole bag of tricks. Your yelling at your brother probably works because it shows to him your concern for him, true concern, not just annoyance that he is causing unpleasantries in your life. I know I used to have an Aussie friend here who would do the same with me. I knew she did it out of sincere concern and so it tickled me and made me want to do right for her, because of her concern. It wouldn't work with others, meaning, it wouldn't work if someone yelled at me for whom I didn't have certain feelings for and clear understanding of their modus operandi. |
Believe it or not it also makes you feel better and you can laugh about it afterwards.
|
Um, I'm not sure what you mean about the wriggly movements in pilates. I don't really see myself as wriggling around the floor and not all pilates are on the floor. The body balance class is a mixture of Tai Chi, Yoga and Pilates so I may not have come across the 'wriggles' yet. The foot then upper body lifts are done slowly and one is encouraged to lift higher each time. If you were belting them out fast then I can understand the 'wriggles' but slowly, it's not unlike the breaststroke you were talking about.
Gotta go, the stomach is growling and the kitchen needs cleaning. |
Sorry, Shad. "Wiggling" and "wriggling" are just the words I use for movements like crunches and lifting both legs simulataneously. It's probably because I don't get too far. I am becoming aware that there is more to pilates, but I won't be doing any of the exercises that involved apparatus. I know there are standing ones too. A lot of the classes, most, I'd say, involved dance and yoga and whatever all mixed in with pilates. I had a pilates tape and tried it and absolutely hated it because it was so boring and hard!!
Don't mind me. I just exaggerate the unpleasant aspects (unpleasant to me, that is) when I don't like something but know it's good for me. ;) Allow me my childishness! |
Hi all! Funny you should bring up the beer challenge Red, because I had one last night so I'm back to day one. It IS a very hard thing to give up. DH has a few trips coming up so if I can get started while he is away, I think I can do it, especially with 2 pause days. I did do it once before, it IS possible. And once I get past that first week, it gets easier to say no.
Jolly, once you get past a week with out caffine, your head aches should ease off. I did a caffine redux challenge and it only took a few days. Although I didn't give up the stuff completely. I'm still trying to clean up, especially the Christmas stuff, so we can bring home a new kitty. I fear the transition for the cat may be tough since we have 2 dogs, who may give him/her a hard time at first. They'll prob be outside alot, if it's not raining. Hope we can find a laid back kitty but you never know till they're home.... Day 3 for exercise done... Fishwoman is out floating on her cruise:cool: |

curly- Your funny, that is exactly where I've been anyway.
Superbowl is 4 more weigh ins away for me, and I'm probably not going to make my challenge. I have been on a plateau for the last two weeks, I'm hoping that tomorrow at my wi I will have broken through it! |
Hey all. Here for my quick pop in. I have quit caffeine before. I actually did taper off, Red. And I still get a tad in the Crystal Light tea I drink, but nowhere near what I used to. The whole point is I want to drink more water - help my skin, etc.- all the good stuff water is supposed to do for you. The headaches are not as bad as usual, and aspirin did kill it.
I didn't make it out to ride tonight either. I am feeling a bit funky again today. A certain work situation just won't go away, and for whatever reason, my emotional reserves to blow it off are just not there. I admit, I am self medicating tonight like crazy. I admit it. I know it won't solve anything. But I am doing it anyway. Even knowing that I may enjoy the numb full feeling now, but my body will be very mad at me in the morning. Sigh. Goal 1 - no extra junk food for work (though home was another matter today. Ah well, that is another challenge) Goal 2 - no caffeinated soda. Good. I am even going to try not to get any soda tomorrow. Just the Crystal Light and water. Think of all the bathroom running calories I will burn :; Have a good evening everyone. |
I am currently working on my FIFTH bottle of water - yes, that's right fifth, with my challenge being four bottles, I guess that means that day 9 is finally in the bag.
The reason I am chugging bottle number five is because I played TWO games, yes TWO games of hockey tonight! Granted I didn't play the entire game but I played a lot and it was FUN and I didn't make an idiot out of myself completely...I didn't fall down or trip over the ball or look like the sad fat girl huffing and puffing - nobody really knew what they were doing (well okay a few people did, but most of us didn't), and we all had a blast. I have another game tomorrow night and I can already tell I"m going to be SOOOORRRRE. I took a ball to the shin (we play floor hockey) and I'm going to have a freaking awesome bruise for tomorrow. Keep on Truckin! Erin :carrot: |
A(1) Water Challenge- Day 11
B(2) SB1 Challenge- Day 11 C(3) The Firm Challenge- Day 11 Off to bed now, so that I can get up early and get my workout in before heading to work. I've got one sick child that has to stay home tomorrow. Luckily my dad will be able to stay with him. |
Day9 done and complete.
Food not so good, but not over the limits so I'll take it. Been scrubbing the kitchen from the top to the bottom. I've washed every item in it today. Tomorrow is a couple more walls, outside of the cupboards and the floor and lest we forget, the windows. Wouldn't it be nice to see out of them. |
I weighed in this morning and I'm down 1 pound. I should be thankful after my weekend of pms cravings, and it being TOM. Hopefully next week will see a bigger drop. I don't think I'm going to make my Superbowl goal, but I would like to get out of the 190s before the end of the month! DH's work holiday party is January 27th, so 3 weeks away, 4 pounds by then should be do able!
Have a great Thursday everyone! |
Yikes!
Forget what I said about checking once a day! Things are sooo crazy here I barely have time to check my email and eat my lunch! I have only eaten 1/2 servings of 'bad' food, though, when I've been craving... and that makes me DAY 3 COMPLETE of the only 1/2 serving of crap challenge. Phew. I miss reading this forum each day and being more involved. |
If at first you don't succeed......get off your butt and try again.....
Exercise Challenge: Day 1 8 mins. of interval training got clearance from the orthopaedist and suggestion exercises to help extend my flexibility so I really need to suck it up. no weight gain, but no loss either and TOM should have started, (i'm certainly crabby enough)! |
