military wives

;) Hi All,
I am pretty new at this. I am a 19 year military wife stationed in Okinawa Japan. I was never overweight as a child. I gained weight as soon as I got married. Food has been a friend while my husband was out to see. I have made a decision to take care of me and make some changes in what I eat and my lack of exercise. I would love to hear from other military wives. ;)

mom2nicolenmatthew 06-15-2005 10:22 PM

Hi I am 21 yrs old Dh is in the Navy, still in school so I havent experienced deployments yet. I have a 3 year old daughter and a two week old son which is why I am on a healthier lifestyle journey now I weigh the most I have ever weighed and feel so lousy! I still have very low iron from having my son so my energy is extremely lacking right now but when I recover a bit more I plan on doing various excercise videos and following the Atkins nutritional approach I had great success with that a few years back so this time it will be forever though no turning back! I dont ever go by what the scales say because that can be so frustrating and misleading my goal is to be a fit and slim as I can be. My dh and my children and I are in south carolina until january then we are going to hopefully be in Alabama if Dh gets accepted into Officers school if not he will be staff here and we will be here for two or three more years, I love it here so I dont mind and I want him to be shore duty for as long as possible. If you dont mind my asking.. What rank is your hubby? is he on a sub or aircraft carrier? Right now Dh is e-4 petty officer he is a nuke and a sub volunteer. best wishes for success for your new healthy lifestyle!

Vicki in Okinawa 06-16-2005 09:07 AM

Hey you must be in Charleston. We were in Beaufort for three yrs. Hubby is a AO E-7. We loved SC. We would have stayed but when hubby made cheif we had to move. We wanted to come here to Japan and we love it. My husband has been on carriers and gator freightors. Your hubby will explain. I would love to give support as a navy wife and a weight loss friend. The navy has been good to us. :cheer: remember you are worth it.

mom2nicolenmatthew 06-16-2005 09:42 AM

Yes I love it here also, the support sounds great! how would you like to do it? we could do daily or weekly check-ins if that sounds good to you, we will say what we ate for the day and what exercise (if any) we did for the day or if you have any other suggest. Im open to anything just gotta get this weight off for good!

Vicki in Okinawa 06-17-2005 04:50 AM

I think that sounds great. I bought a cd player and music and I am heading for the gym after dinner. Remember we are 13 hrs ahead. I took ff sour cream and 98% fat free cream of mushroom and cooked chicken in it and i am having japanese rice. My hubby is doing this too, which is nice. I had an eggsalad sandwhich for breakfast and a chicken sandwhich for lunch. I am trying new recipes almost everynight. Hope you had a great day, stay strong and remember what it feels like to be fit. ;)

Kaylets 06-17-2005 05:45 AM

Hello ladies!
Just poking my head in to say good luck on your weight loss journey and how proud I am of our military families! Anytime you'd like to come by and say hello, feel free to stop at "Slimming Royals to Solstice"....

Kaylets

fl_mom 06-17-2005 10:50 AM

I figured I would stop in and say heya! My dh is an E5 in the Navy and currently on shore duty. He is in a locked rate tho "GSM" and it talking to the NCO about the blue to green program for transferring to the Army. I know they if he gets what he wants, he'll be shipped off to Iraq but I still support whatever he wants to do.

We have 2 boys, 5 & 1 1/2 and are currently in FL.

Talk about confusing LOL I thought you meant you were a 19yo Chief's wife LMAO.

mom2nicolenmatthew 06-17-2005 11:19 AM

lol Me too at first :)

Vicki in Okinawa 06-18-2005 05:51 AM

Ya'll made me and hubby laugh so hard. I said baby you wish I was 19. ;) I married him when I was 18 and I am 37. August 2 will be 19.
Kaylets thank you for the support.Fl_ mom, welcome. We were in Jax twice. It was hot there. We are from Ga. so I should have been used to it.Where are you in Fl?
We went sight seeing today and I am so proud :cp: of me. When we are out it is hard to find good food to eat that I like. We went to a restaurant on base and I had a grilled chicken sandwich. I had a LC spaghetti dinner. I am off to the gym again tonight. I am so sore today. I will skip on Sunday. It is still raining here.
Talk to ya lighter later :flow2:

fl_mom 06-18-2005 01:14 PM

My dh was 17 (I was 20) when we got married. Our 7yr anniversary is August 8 and it doesn't seem like it's been that long.

We are in Jax/Mayport. We used to live on base but decided we didn't need the drama associated with it. Before this we were in Everett, Wa and we left there because we hated the weather. I miss the area now though, especially seeing the mountains from my living room window.

We are going to either try and stay here or if DH moves to the army, we will request Kentucky (we are both from ohio). DH keeps saying he wants to live here in FL when he gets out of the military but when he found out we might be able to go to Kentucky, I saw him trying to hide his excitement. I know we'll never live overseas, with DH's job we will never have to and he doesn't want to go.

I am making low carb beef stroganoff for my dinner, spaghetti squash instead of noodles.

Vicki in Okinawa 06-18-2005 10:38 PM

Tell all the hubby's happy father's day. :woo: Well it is already sunday for us. I am not exercising today. 6 days a week is plenty. Tomorrow is weigh in day. :cb:
I can't wait till I have lost about 30. I think that is when you can really tell.
fl_mom we lived on base in jax so I know what you mean. After 19 yrs I have learned to be picky in whom I spend my time with. My sister in-law just bought a house there and her hubby retired from the navy. They were stationed there before and they decided to come back and retire. She said jobs are hard to find and they hate it there. I told her to give it two yrs. When we were younger we swore we would never go overseas. When the boys were young our mothers would have been so upset if we would have taken the kids overseas. We asked to come here. One for the money and two for the experience. We love it. The boys love it. Now my friend is in Italy and she hates it. Everyone who had been here before told us they loved it. I now know why. :dancer:

Vicki in Okinawa 06-19-2005 11:12 PM

Weigh in day and I am down 6pds. I can't believe it. I could do this forever. No dieting. :bravo:  :balloons:

fl_mom 06-20-2005 07:39 AM

6lbs, woo hoo! I am down 3 lbs but that was just weight I put on over a few days so I am back down to my ticker weight LOL I have been cheating and I am not proud of it but I am motivated to stay with the south beach diet since I have been seeing results.

I can tell that I have lost weight but I don't think that anyone else can. I can't tell when I look in the mirror yet but I notice the differece when I put on certain clothes. I am down at least 1 size, maybe 2 but I don't know. I was wearing a size 18 in jeans and a few weeks ago I was wearing a 16. Only 1 pair of my 16's fit me though so I will have to try some more clothes on to see if there is anything else I can wear that I couldn't before.

mom2nicolenmatthew - how are you doing? The kids are probably keeping you busy with not enough sleep lol Believe it or not, I miss those days.

StaceyLeigh 06-21-2005 11:56 AM

Hello everyone!

I, too am a military wife! US Navy and proud! We currently live in Norfolk, Virginia. My husband is an OS 1. I have been on the waiting list for the Gastric Bypass operation for nearly two years and my time is finally drawing near! YAY!! I have my pre-op appointment on July the 1st and should find out on that day my actually operation date. I am so very excited! Ohh and ready! Has anyone else had this operation and if so how did it go for you? Looking forward to getting to know you all. Feel free to e-mail me if you would like. I love pen pals!

Vicki in Okinawa 06-21-2005 10:58 PM

Hey StacyLeigh,
We just moved here from Virginia beach. My hubby was on the Saipan. I don't miss it. It was a long drive home. Where are you from?
I haven't had any experience with the surgery but there are threads that talk about it a lot. I am so glad that tricare is paying for it. It is about time. :)

fl_mom 06-22-2005 08:58 AM

Welcome Stacey.

I didn't know TriCare paid for gastric bypass. I am looking into plastic surgery so that when I am done having kids and done losing weight, I can finally get rid of my excess skin. I wish they'd pay for that but oh well, can't have everything.

StaceyLeigh 06-22-2005 11:45 AM

Hi again..
I am from CT. But i met my husband while in Hawaii :) We lived there for 7 years and then went to California and now here to Virginia where we will stay until he retires. We have been here for 6 years and will be here for another 5 or so.
And yes the military does so the bypass. They do it Lap style now too which is so much less traumatic! Also I was told that here in Portsmouth the plastic sergery clinic is opening up to us to remove the excess skin, where when I first got on the list they were not offering it. So I am pretty happy about that. I am worried that my boobs are going to look like deflated pancakes. I went from a full C to a very full DDD! Ugh can you imagine!
I am so glad I found this web site. So many nice people!!

fl_mom 06-22-2005 12:16 PM

I sooo understand the boob thing LOL I will have to ask the doc at the hospital here about the plastic surgery. The last time I saw a doc was to get a referrel to the infertility clinic and that was months ago.

It must be exciting to get so close to your surgery. I saw a program on Discovery about it and the people changed so much, not just weight loss but self-esteem, etc..

Vicki in Okinawa 06-24-2005 12:42 AM

Hey all,
Just checking in. Still going strong. Hope everyone is having a good week. I am looking forward to the weekend.

fl_mom 06-26-2005 09:23 AM

Stopping in to say HI!! :D

mom2nicolenmatthew 06-26-2005 10:28 AM

Hi everyone I have been busy busy with the kids and trying to find a good schedule that works for everyone. I have been staying true to this WOE and I still havent weighed but I have 12 days for my post part.appt and I will find out then! I know I am definetely losing inches because my very tight maternity jeans just slide right on, now I dont have to jump up and down to get the on lol so that has to mean something right?

How is everyone else doing?

mom2nicolenmatthew 06-26-2005 10:28 AM

does anyone know if tri-care covers the cost of a vasectomy?

StaceyLeigh 06-26-2005 11:55 AM

Hello.. Yes Tri Care will conver a vasectomy as long as he has had atleast 2 children one of which is a boy. At least those were the rules last time we checked. The want the man to have a boy to carry on his name. I personally think it should be the individulas choice... but I guess they do not want any later regrets!
Hope you all are doing great! We are having awesome weather. Went to the beach Friday early evening and the kids had a blast, then yesterday we were swimming in the pool!! Hugs ladies.. See you soon!

Vicki in Okinawa 06-26-2005 07:30 PM

Hi all,
I am down three more pds and I am so excited. :flow2:
My hubby had a vasectomy back in 92 and the military did it. We did have two boys and he was 25 at the time. It was simple and he said he sat up and watched and he was fine the next day.
Hope all is doing well.

fl_mom 06-27-2005 07:58 AM

My dh wants to get a V after we are done having kids.

My weight has stayed the same for a week but I splurged (not cheated) and ate a few things I shouldn't so I am just glad it didn't go up. I really think it helps to have something you don't normally eat about once a week. When I was doing WW, I didn't count points on saturdays and ate things I normally ate, lost more weight than counting points all week. Now that I am doing south beach and plan on doing it for life, I refuse to say "I can't have that" for forever. As long as I don't overdo it like I did this weekend and stick with healthier choices, I will be happy with myself.

mom2nicolenmatthew 06-27-2005 10:01 AM

awesome we have a girl and now our boy so hopefully we we qualify! Only 10 days until I get to weigh for the first time in a month, so far I havent cheated and I have been running around with dd so I def. am getting exercise but I would love to go rollerblading, maybe one day when the kids are grown! :) anyways glad you all are losers lol you know what I mean. :) take care and keep on posting, I will do the same!

about the vasect. how long is recovery time usually?

Candy76 06-27-2005 09:54 PM

Hey everyone... I just found this group today.

I am prior active duty Air Force (got out in 1997) and my husband is a firefighter in the Air Force. We have been married for 8 years and have two daughters (BTW- my dh had a vas, and we only have two girls... I have never heard of such a rule, and I was a medic in the AF who assisted with vas's).

We are currently stationed at Whiteman AFB in Missouri. We came here from Kadena AB in Okinawa (1998-2002) and before that our first base was Beale AFB in California. We now have orders to Ramstein AB in Germany for December of this year (2005).

Nice to meet all of you!

mom2nicolenmatthew 06-27-2005 10:21 PM

welcome candy!

StaceyLeigh 06-27-2005 10:50 PM

Welcome Candy. Glad to have you here. What type of WL program are you using? Give is all the details girl!! :) Looking forward to getting to know you better.
Stacey

Vicki in Okinawa 06-28-2005 01:32 AM

Hey all and welcome Candy ;)
Sounds like everyone is doing great. Candy we are stationed at Kadena. I live in Terrace heights. My husband is Navy at CfAO. We love it here. Have any advice on things to do here or places to eat healthy. I have been going to risner gym 6 nights a week. I love this gym. I am sorry you are not wanting to go to Germany. My two bestfrinds were stationed there and loved it. One of them is in Italy now and hates it. Hey if you ever get a chance to be stationed at Moody AF base in Valdosta Ga, that is where we are from and it is the best. The people are so nice and it has grown but you still have the small town effect.Like StacyLeigh said give us the details so we can support you. :cb:
I am trying to set a birthday goal for Oct. 25. What do ya'll think would be not to easy but not to hard?
Vicki

What are you talkin' about girl? I am thrilled to be moving to Germany! lol... I love living overseas! The best years of our lives were in Okinawa!

Okay... Here is what I am doing. I am not following a specific plan. I have spent so many years trying different "diets" and "ways of life" to lose weight, but they have always failed... or I have always failed them. My husband was once a personal trainer and is now an avid health and nutrition nut, so I am just going to start eating the way he eats and exercising the way he does:

Nutritionally--
I have cut out virtually ALL sugar... I have cut out starchy carbs and bad fats, meaning I eat carbs only from veggies and whole grains and fats only from olive oil and things like avacado. I am aiming for a daily ratio of 30% fat, 30% protein, and 40% carbs... approx. 1400-1600 calories a day.

Physically--
I am strength training with Kettlebells (Russian weight training system that my husband has been doing for years... he is acting as my personal trainer) and I am doing that 3x per week.
I am doing a cardio variety routine 3x a week that includes 10 minutes on the upright bike (followed by stretching), 10 minutes on the elliptical (this is the one I am trying to increase each visit, so next week I am hoping to reach 15 minutes on this bad boy), 10 minutes of brisk treadmill walking, and then a 10 minute cool down on the sit down bike followed by stretching. I am going to start replacing one or two of these sessions each week with Spinning, aerobics, and other cardio classes just to keep things different and interesting... I need constant change to stay interested. I learned that about myself over the past few attempts at wieght loss!
I also walk a mile each night (5-7 nights a week). It would be more, but I bring my kiddos along and a mile takes us about 40 minutes!
I am also in a dance class for an hour each Saturday. We work on abs, stretching, and then ballet moves, jumps, etc.

That is about it! ;)

Vicki in Okinawa 06-28-2005 06:34 PM

Sorry about that Candy, I can't read when it's early in the morning. ;) When I saw misery ,well lets just say I read it wrong. :dizzy: I am so glad to hear that you are doing a life style change and not a diet. I am doing a life style change. I went to the doc a few weeks ago and my bloodpressure was sky high and my sugar was high and she started talking about more meds and a light bulb went off. I decided no! I am gonna take the weight off. I am going to the gym 6 days a week and I need a personal trainer but I haven't asked yet. With the plan you have ,you will be successful. :cp:
Vicki

Candy76 06-28-2005 09:01 PM

That is like me Vicki. My blood pressure was 145/90!!! Plus, my cholesterol was high... and I am only 29 years old!!!! ugh.

Thanks for the support girls!

Vicki in Okinawa 06-29-2005 08:32 PM

Candy, My blood pressure was alittle higher. I have been on Maxide since my 20's. Now I am 37 and she wants to add medicines. She is giving me six weeks to get some weight off or add meds. They have side effects. I promised myself that I would get fit before I turn 40. I will be 38 in Oct, so I have two years to make this happen. Candy, In my 20's I thought I felt my weight. Little did I know that I would really start to feel it. It slows you down,my knees were hurting, i would get tired just from going to the store. For the first time in my life I started having a sugar problem. My boys are now 13 and 16 and I don't think they will marry early and I think they may not have children till they are 30. How would I get to enjoy my grandchildren?
All this meant nothing in my 20's but now it has become a health issue. Of course I want to look good too. ;)

Candy76 06-29-2005 09:19 PM

We have the same weight goal! That is groovy because we can lose it together! You are lucky though... You get to lay on the beach, go to REAL Japanese restaurants, and visit really cool castles!

I am so excited to move to Germany, but I would trade it for Okinawa in a heartbeat! I really loved it there and I have dreams about moving back and settling down there.

Vicki in Okinawa 06-30-2005 09:01 AM

Hey all,
Hey Candy :cp: I checked out your fitday, you are doing so good. I thought I would never say this but I love going to the gym. :tread: :ebike: :cb:
I am starting to think about how I am getting through this weekend. We are going to a picnic at whitebeach.
We have thought about staying here. My hubby wants to take a GS job and stay. I am so ready to stay for 5 to 10 yrs.
How tall are you? I was in a 20 pants and now the 18's fall off and 16's are alittle snug. I bought a TH 14 pair of jean shorts and I got them up but not buttoned. First goal!! maybe a month or two till they will fit. I think I am gonna set a goal for The middle of Oct because we have the navy ball to go to. I love your goal because it is so hard to travel when I am heavy.
Stay strong this weekend and I will be here if you need me.

Candy76 06-30-2005 10:58 AM

I am 5'5"... I wear a size 18-20 right now, but most of my 18's are too tight. I carry ALL of my weight around my middle and upper body. My legs are not as big as they should be, but my belly... oooohhh, my belly! It is just icky! My belly probably will not be flat until I reach my end goal of 135... even then, I may need a tummy tuck because I have stretch marks from top to bottom!

If you need ideas for meals on the go, you might want to try the Ready-to-Drink Myoplex Light's by EAS. That is what I use... only 1 gram of sugar and just the right amounts of carbs and protein. Just keep them in the refrigerator until you are ready to use them. If you know you will be using one, put it in the freezer a couple hours ahead of time and it will stay cold longer. In Okinawa, I think you can find them at the Foster GNC store or even the BX/PX on Kadena or Foster. You also might be able to order them online and have them shipped.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Vicki in Okinawa 07-01-2005 09:04 AM

I am 5'4 and my weight is also up top. I have tiny legs which makes people always tell me "you are not supposed to be fat". I have started losing in my legs, butt and chest. My stomach will be the last to go. It has gone down a tiny bit. Our weight is worse than those who have weight on the bottom. Ours is hurting our heart and causing high blood pressure.
I have been hungry today. Friday is almost over for me and I am going to bed soon. We bought a large George Foreman grill today. It is to hot to grill outside. So, What are ya'll doing for the fourth? How old are your girls?
Vicki

fl_mom 07-01-2005 09:40 AM

Welcome Candy!

I am Angela, 27 yo Blonde 5'4, wanna date?? Ok j/k, I carry all my weight in my middle and upper legs, It is caused by the pcos :( I am currently following the south beach diet (recommended by doc) and taking Metformin to help with my insulin resistance. So far in the past 2 mths I have lost 22lbs and after I get to my goal, I may try for more.

My dh is Navy, we are stationed in Florida and have never been and will never go overseas. We have 2 boys, see pics in sig, they are 5 and 1.5yo. We are trying for #3 (think pink!) and also looking to adopt another boy 0-5yo.
