Whell, golly gee, bovinesses, ah didn't know ah was causing all kina trouble!

School got cancelled today due to the cold -- but not before DH took DD to school for 7am jazz band practice, and I had to go pick her up because he had to get to work. I was soooooooo looking forward to sleeping all morning. Since when do they cancel school for cold weather? I swear I don't think they've ever done that before here. It was -26F on the car thermometer while I was driving into town. Plus a hellacious wind. Our poor furnace can't keep up and it's cold in here. Boohoo. Poor me.

Kiwi

Kiwonk 01-14-2004 09:39 AM

The weather channel online says we should expect a high of -12F and a low of -23, with wind chills as low as -50. I think I'm going back to bed.

Wabby 01-14-2004 12:30 PM

Brrrrrrr. You poor northerners. Everythings all melted off here and we're back to normal. I'm thinking warm thoughts of you all.

Way to go on the beach body workout, Kiwi! I'm impressed! Did it warm you up any?

My friend called and asked if I wanted to start going to Weight Watchers again. I really don't. Maybe next week. When are we getting motivated around here? Sugar, do you really love your eliptical trainer? Our treadmill has quit on us, and I'm thinking of replacing it with an eliptical. What are your thoughts on this?

I'm just full of questions today.

Bagzz 01-14-2004 01:07 PM

my sister has an elliptical and it cost FORTY SIX HUNDRED dollars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! helllloooooooooooooooooooooo?????????????????????? ???? there must be cheaper ones!! anyway---she lOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSs it better than the dreadmill----- i have been dreadmilling lately------in a desultory fashion-------------I LOVE THAT WORD HELLACIOUS KIWONK!!!----SCHOOL WAS ON HERE IN ANTARCTICA THO=========HALF THE KIDS DIDN'T SHOW UP----BUT MINE DID!!!!

Kiwonk 01-14-2004 03:41 PM

OOO, desultory, nice word, Bagz. I feel like doing everything in a desultory fashion today. I took a way too long nap and boy do I feel sluggish. At least I was warm.

Wabbit, you wore out the treadmill? ;) That's impressive! I don't think I have another workout tape in me today. Maybe I'll do 15 minutes of stairs -- the real kind! Think I can do it for 15 minutes? :tread:

Somebody give me an idea for dinner. I was going to do grocery shopping tonight, but DD doesn't have dance class, so I don't have to go out (and far be it from me to go out when I don't have to), so I don't have salad stuff, and everything that looks like food is frozen.

Omygod, what are these smilies? They're hilarious!

Kiwi

Wabby 01-14-2004 06:52 PM

I confess, Kiwi. It weren't me. DD wore out the treadmill. I do better walking outside. Or at least I did do better outside. Haven't done any walking lately, except the occasional Leslie Sansone video tape. I'm burning a walk music tape from the library. I'm hoping it will inspire me to move my body.

I'm thinking of making a chicken pot pie w/ left over baked chicken from yesteday. Can I get away w/ chicken 2 days in a row? It's either that or somebody can take me out.

Anybody have Applebee's restaurants in their area? Ever have an Applebee's Blondie w/ maple sauce and ice cream? I shared on w/ my sis last weekend. It was wonderful.

Geez. No wonder I'm tubby.

Lohani 01-14-2004 08:34 PM

Thoughts on recent topics:

1. The best food at Applebees is boneless buffalo wings...smothered in Blue Cheese dressing. Yum.

2. As you will remember, I have an independent third party who will verify a murder attempt upon my little self by a family member. I think that says it all.

3. Peaches, the woman who works at the home is not your mother's friend. She's an employee of the home, I'll bet that she doesn't give a rat's patoot about anything but lightening her own workload. AND it probably comes as no surprise to her that your mother is difficult in the extreme, otherwise why would she have lied about the violent episodes? Your well-being and peace of mind are just as important as your mother wanting to go shopping. I could see getting a temporary pang of guilt if they were asking you to take her to a doctor, but you should feel guilty about SHOPPING????????? I thought that is why G*d put snooty cousins on this earth, to feel superior to us by doing the things we don't want to do.
Like everyone else, your mom is reaping what she sowed. Who are you to cheat her out of this valuable lesson on cause and effect?
4. I think you should go to the butcher shop. It is Wednesday and they have chicken Tortellini soup...$4.50 a quart. They have bread from the bakery.....ahhhhh. Perfect dinner.
5. It is cold here, too. This is supposed to be a temperate climate. I object to extremes of temperature. The upside is that we probably won't have school tomorrow since we're supposed to get over an inch of snow....an amount that flumoxes NewJerseyans.
6. I have to go shift wash.
bye

Bagzz 01-14-2004 10:58 PM

Kiwonk 01-15-2004 02:25 AM

Ah, disapproval. Keep up the good work(s), Bagz. I like the idea of engaging in temperance. Publicly. Loudly. Although, not constantly. I mean, there may be times when a good belt is the only solution to a thorny problem. Like a cocktail party with relatives, for instance.

Another advantage of suddenly giving up drinking is that people will start to whisper about whether you might be pregnant.

Well, I guess calling that an advantage might be stretching things a mite. :chin:

Apparently I need some sleep.

g'night
Kiwi

Lohani 01-15-2004 07:32 AM

Kiwi, I hate to break this to you, but no one thinks we're pregnant anymore.

Wabby 01-15-2004 01:31 PM

I like the cause and effect thing. Lush has such good advice. Give me some advice, Lush.

Bagzie, I was talking about the cheap eliptical trainers that they have here for under $400. For the kind of money your sis spent, I'd expect it to do all the work.

I don't want to join any temperance movements. I need a drink. Now.

Hah, speak for yourself, I'm still a youthful 29. Everyone thinks I'm pregnant!

Wait a minute, that's not good either...

Would you believe they cancelled school again today? Too cold for the little weenies apparently. I'm speaking of small children, of course, not what you were thinking. DH and I were trying to remember if they had ever closed for cold weather before, and we don't think so. Our town is known for never having snow days; we can plow through anything. Apparently we've changed.

My back hurts. I made DD empty the d/w and she broke a glass already  It never pays to get help, does it?

Staying warm

Cowp: Wabby's right... read about narcicissm and borderline personality disorders.... the nurses et al get PAID to make sure your Mom is cared for. It is plenty to do what you are willing to do. If you actually WANT to do more, figure out how to do it without putting Mom OR yourself at risk. Guilt is a big waste of energy!

Sorry if little weenies are freezing up north. I think they're drying up in Texas, tho' we're (finally) due for a little rain this week & weekend.

I don't want to cook. I makes me start my food obsessions.
I don't want to do laundry... there must be 6 loads to do.
I want to not do anything at all... play computer games, read and nap. Hmmm. I have the day off... actually there's no reason I couldn't just do that... especially once I get to the market and post office to mail tax check.

Thanks for the web address to get NO ads.... That'd be nice. I don't have to slide the messages... fyi.

Ta, y'all.

NO MAD COWS!

Cowpernia 01-15-2004 02:14 PM

Why does Charmin have Vitamin E on it?

I have a real problem. Not a petty problem like others of you. I have a wonderful steel steamer that came with a set of cookware (cookwear, Sugar) and fits inside a pot. The pot's lid fits the steamer.

Welllll yesterday the lid was busy so I used a smaller lid that fit inside it and NOWOWOWOWOWWO the lid is stuck in there so tight that it's waterproof. I LOVE MY STEAMER... There are potatoes stuck between the steamer and the lid.

DS and I tried to get off while hot, cold and with 3-in-1 oil. Now, it's in the freezer waiting for a miracle.

Cowpernia 01-15-2004 02:26 PM

Painty's post didn't 'pear til Peaches prissily 'parted.

Painty have a cup of tea. Snuggle under a blankey in your favorite chair. Fall asleep. You are not the energizer painty

Kiwonk 01-15-2004 03:12 PM

Wow, that's impressive, Peachie. You tried ice cubes on top and boiling water on the bottom? Is there any liquid in there? Maybe you could boil it until it exploded. Okay, maybe that's not such a great idea... Just brainstorming.

You can't force one side of the lid downward so it tilts?

k.

Cowpernia 01-15-2004 03:15 PM

I am impressed back at 'ya. I saw a post from Kiwi and I says to myself, "Well, here comes a smart alecky answer." Now I am ashamed.

The bottom is a steamer. It has holes in it. The liquid is gone. Potatoes remain. Can't force it anywhere.

Cowpernia 01-15-2004 03:25 PM

Remember those computer pets? Kitties, doggies, sheep? I have a pet box of cereal.

Wabby 01-15-2004 03:50 PM

Howza 'bout poking a couple of wire clothes hangers through the holes in the steamer from the bottom and pushing the bottom side of the lid? I love my pan w/ the steamer basket too. You're right. This is a real problem.

Painty, before you nap at least put in one load of clothes. It's not so bad once you start and you'll be glad tomorrow when you have to work and your laundry is piled up. Besides, the sound of the washer is good background noise for napping. I want to go home and wash clothes. A nap would be nice too.

I'm lifting 10 pound dumbells now. Pretty good for a weakling. I'm starting to feel muscles in my arms. You all need to go check out this - www.agelesstraining.com Apparently we have until 72 to get this right.

Lohani 01-15-2004 09:53 PM

Wabby, I have a while to go. But not much...I'm turning 50 in June...do you believe it???? I could use a fitness program. I'm finished with Bulges. It got boring.

I would fill the tub with water and submerge the whole thing. Maybe it will float out.

I like the sound of the dryer for napping, too.

SugP 01-16-2004 05:29 AM

Dear Abby

Where have I been? Beat's me. But I'm here now with advice for everyone.

First things first. I have no idea how to get that lid unstuck. I've done things like that many times. Usually hot/cold water ice cubes worked, but we're talking old potatoes here. I'll have to think about this for a bit.

Wabs, our elliptical was under $400. We had a REALLY cheap one first, the kind where the wheel is driven by a nylon belt, and that broke really fast. This one is a bit better and works just fine for our purposes. I've never really used a treadmill so I can't compare it. You can watch tv when you're on the elliptical but it'd be too bumpy to read. They say the arm movement exercises your abs and entire upper body so that's an added bonus.

Peachy! You need a giant group hug.:grouphug: Everyone's advice has been impeccable. I personally think going shopping with your mom would do both of you more harm than good and I don't think you have an obligation to do it if it makes you feel at all uncomfortable.

I've been feeling entirely too hormonal to even think about exercising plus the lady who thinks she a dentist has been fiddling around with my teeth and making them hurt. She's nice though. Pictures of St. Tropez and Disney World on the walls. BUT I am still under 150 which is truly a miracle.

Must be volatile

Here's what the Home and Garden e-mail subscription led off with this morning:

It takes patience to appreciate domestic bliss; volatile spirits prefer unhappiness.

Well, apparently I'm not patient OR lethargic. Still trying to decide if that's a good thing. Thanks for the encouragements. Read most of DaVinci Code, and talked to a window replacement guy. For a mere $32,000.00 we could replace all the windows in top form. That's 3x what my parents paid for there whole @#$%^ing house. Jeez. Will probably go with 2nd class windows AND only replace the ones on the West side of the house that have "popped" and begun collecting moisture between the panes.

Re potato pan/steamer... somehow there's vapor lock there and it's sucking the lid in tight. I am a faithful believer in soaking... surely water could sneak it's way between lid and pan bottom and eventually (before Easter) float the lid away...? Good luck.

Off to window sales guy #2 :s:

Wabby 01-16-2004 01:28 PM

Painty, windows R us, you know. Are you replacing existing windows w/ wood, vinyl, or woodclad fiberglass? Get a bunch of estimates, because there are lots of companies that charge a fortune for essentially the same windows as half the cost. You should expect a lifetime warranty on windows. Do not go to someplace like Sears for windows. Choose a reputable company with an actual business address, not someone who advertises w/ a phone number only. Ask about the ease of glass replacement. Some windows like Pozzi windows have to have the entire sash replaced if a window gets broken. Not good. This is a subject that I have good advice for, even if you didn't ask for it.

Sugar, thanks for the eliptical advice. The ones I've looked at are in the $400 range. Do you actually use yours or is it a clothes hanger? I've never been able to read on a treadmill anyway, so that's no problem.

Bagzie, if I'm picturing the pot problem correctly - the lid is stuck in the steamer basket portion of the pot. I have one that is like a double boiler, except that the inner pot has holes in it so that the steam can go in it. Am I right about this scenario, Peaches? Otherwise, nevermind the last advice.

We have basements here. They always leak. Our's was always dry until we had an earthquake about 10 years ago, and it seems to have stirred up an underground spring. We had to spend big $$$'s to have a drain and sump pump system installed. The pump runs every 15 seconds in the rainy season, which makes my electric bill $200 for most of the year and that doesn't include heat because our furnace is gas. No basements in FL. Florridder ppl don't even bury ppl underground, do they?

I just finished reading The Secret Life of Bees and also The Master Butcher's Singing Club, both excellent. Now I'm on to Shutter Island, by the guy who wrote Mystic River(also good book) and In Her Shoes by the same woman who wrote Good in Bed. I'm on the library list for Amateur Marriage by Ann Tyler, who I love. I love to read. I should have been a librarian.

Kiwonk 01-16-2004 01:51 PM

Can't be vapor lock -- the bottom part's got holes in it! Too bad it's not microwaveable -- you could put the whole thing in there for an hour and when the potatoes blew up, it would come apart... What's a slenderina? That sounds like the perfect tool. I want one, whatever it is.

Still, have you tried putting water in your pot and setting the thing back into the pot and letting it simmer, then dumping icecubes on the top? Yeah, I know, you said you'd tried something like that, but I didn't know if you'd simmered it.

If you ever get the lid off, don't eat the potatoes. :p

Good lord, $32000 just for windows? I was daydreaming about getting our house renovated (probably just a permanent daydream), and I was thinking we might be able to replace our crappy cheap leaky windows as well. haha. I'm gonna live in this piece of :censored: dump till I die. Which should be just about 20 years after I finally get buff, considering my family's longevity. I'm very pleased to know that I have 24 years to finish this 90 day Beach Body tape, especially since I've onlynnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
(The cat is walking across my keyboard. She's a pushy little thing.) managed to do one workout this week.

Would you believe school is closed for another day? And I suppose Monday is a holiday, isn't it? Marks are closing soon, and the variety show is coming up, these poor kids are going to be scrambling to get their things done. It's not fair to them to close schools for such a stupid reason. Everyone in Maine knows that winters are cold, they don't need to be shut inside permanently until spring for gods sake.

Sugar, you're cute when you're loopy. Good luck with the crocheting. Maybe you could use a slenderina.

Ta

Kiwonk 01-16-2004 02:00 PM

Wow, Wabbit, you must really read fast! Do you get to read at work? I am a deadly slow reader -- I'm still reading the collection of Christmas stories I got from the library and have renewed once already. Of course I'm also reading the latest Harry Potter at the same time, so that divides my reading time. But I'm really slow. You should get together with my friend that moved out there--she's a voracious reader too.

Kiwi

Wabby 01-16-2004 03:58 PM

Yup. I read at work. Only thing that keeps me from going insane.

Hey, Seattle Garden Show is first week of February. Anyone interested? I found an online 2 for one train fare coupon. You just have to get to Portland first.

Kiwonk 01-16-2004 04:39 PM

Gee, Portland's only a few hour's drive from here. Oh. That Portland.

PainterWoman 01-16-2004 11:55 PM

Cranky Crabby Crushed Cantankerous

Don't know where my post just went. Grrrrrrrrr.
Wabby... thank you for window advice. Can I invite all the bidders/contractors over at the same time so I don't have to invest 10-15 hours watching them count windows and listening to their pitches? I suppose 10 hours time on an expensive decision might be worth it... but there's other stuff I'd rather do with that kind of time.

Reading is good. Had a buying binge financed by DH. Just finished DaVinci Code... Probably the next to the last person on the planet to read it... who IS going to read it anyway. More exciting than I expected. Will start either "East" or "Scipio's Dream" next.... or knitting.

Longevity being what it is in my family, I'll NEVER be buff. but we might move. I wish I had a cat still.

And a garden show, for that matter. Just chores. Drat. Grumpy. Better get the knitting needles, I feel the need for a stiff drink coming on.

Cherry Cow 01-17-2004 12:45 AM

Peaches, did you solve your steamer problem? I'm stumped.

Painty, I haven't read The DaVinci Code yet.

Wabby, I haven't read any of the books on your list. It'll be a couple of years before I can get to them, unless I decide to buy them. I'm just now reading "The Corrections," which I really like. It's quite sick and disturbing.

Hi Kiwi, SugarP, Lush, and Bagzz!

I've been incommunicado while I take all kinds of tests. I tested out of science last week and I took the GRE this week. So now I have to write an essay about why I want to go to library school.

It was exam week for DS14 this week. I think he did okay.

I'm still fat. I've been studying. At least I'm maintaining in the 170s.

Bagzz 01-17-2004 08:15 AM

WOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWW----I GOT THE NEW ANN MARIE MacDonald book for christmas----i think "as the crow flies"---did anyone read her book "fall on your knees" that was deadly{or did we already discuss this??} i really feel like my mind is not working well----they say it is perimenopause---but it feels like alzheimers---------KIWI!!!---WHEN MY gay guy friend who paints my house {inside and out} was trying to reach behind the radiator to peel off some old wallpaper, his hands were too big so he yelled to me "Mari!!! bring your slenderinas over here and reach down and pull off that paper" ever since then i have called my dainty hands "slenderinas"--------HOW ever we could call ourselves that for when we get BUFF or Biffed ---------------hey,the new kitty's name is Boffo-------won't that be just Boffo when all the Slenderina Cows are Buff!!!{and i had my margies LAST night}-----gotta go ds9 is goalie for the hockey game today and he is beside himself with excitement~!!! so is dh!!! I have the video camera primed!!!!

Cowpernia 01-17-2004 08:34 AM

I have a friend who knows everything. She took the pot home and now the lid is off. I don't know how she did it. DS took the message.

I am depressed. I would rather be loopy.

I will talk about my car. Herbie gave me this car .. 1997 La Sabre and I love it. There has never been light from the dome light though. You need a flash light. This morning I had to drive DS to the next town to go spellunking with scouts and on the way back, the light (plus two on the floor I've never seen) came on when I used the gas pedal. Off the gas, off the light. Push the gas, on the light. I cannot stand this.

I have one more complaint about yesterday. I have been active on a fiction writing workshop site. You must critique other peoples stories there and I was about to do one for a guy (I had it printed off) when it didn't take sense. It contradicted itself. I was at work and read that part to my friend who knows everything and she said it sounded really familiar, that story.

So I googled a line out of it and found a lot of it had been copied from the New Yorker. The original was online. I told a group of people there about this (which seems natural to me to discuss what goes on there) and told the SYSOP. The SYSOP got irritated because he didn't have time to handle it (delete it) before people started email him asking how he could put up with such things.

Bye.

Cowpernia 01-17-2004 08:35 AM
