    GOOD AFTERNOON IN APRIL MAGNOLIAS
    ☺♫

We have been busy with the MH and getting things arranged in it so it will be user friendly. We have almost all the items we have purchased for it in it now and will make decisions where to put things tomorrow if the wind isn’t blowing. There are other things that we have but want to keep so we can store them in TX like large tables for Will to do his leather work on and my sewing table plus some other miscellaneous needful items.

DONNA FAYE That is too bad you are having flooding woes. Hope they get everything fixed soon. We were in a rented place once and when it rained we had a flood in one closet and everything in it got a soaking. What couldn’t get revived the land lord paid for replacements. The person that had done some roof work had left an area above the closet unattached and the wind blew it open and water poured in. I do understand your dilemma.

JEAN We are a bit windy here today also. We had rain yesterday which was welcomed for sure.

SUSAN I haven't seen any mosquitoes here yet but maybe it has been too dry for them to hatch that is until maybe this last rain woke then up. Hope they stay on the outside of your screen.

Always remember ~ Never, never, never give up
  • Good morning to you all. It is pretty cool this morning in the 40's actually and barely supposed to reach 70 by late afternoon today.

We were promised this sewer mess would be taken care of yesterday by the property manager and his plumber never showed up. Jack even called the guy again around 3 to make sure the guy was coming and told him we needed to get a hotel if he wasn't coming. He never showed up and when I looked at hotels in our area because we waited, the overnight charges went from around $90 to $300 so we opted to stay at the house. It has been a nightmare again and I told Jack to call the property manager this morning and tell him straight out we stayed in the house and can't use any any water facility because now the area in front of our condo has sewage coming out of it too!! I had to put a black trash bag inside the toilet so I could go to the bathroom, what is in the toilet and can't be flushed is smelling up everything and I can't clean house pretty much until this is fixed. I am mad and grouchy and stressed so I imagine my blood sugar is going to be messed up as we have had to eat all our meals out except to make a sandwich for dinner last night. Jack had to go by McDonalds to get breakfast because we are afraid to run any water through the sink. I just can't believe other people in the building aren't raising holy heck about this.

Jean: I don't know if other buildings have trouble, but this particular problem is not the main, main line because that would be a city issue. It is where all the individual condos in just our building's sewage merges and goes out to the main line. I am wondering if we have the most problems because we are the middle condo, but who knows? I just want it fixed so I can clean up and disinfect and make it all go away. Jack has wasted a vacation day sitting around waiting for this guy yesterday. It doesn't help the bathroom is next to the kitchen either. ICK!!! Did you win playing cards? What kind of card game did you say you play?

Maggie: I know getting everything stored away in the MH has to be great. Frankly, I wish it were some leak as we could put a bucket down or whatever. It is the pits not being able to use the toilets, wash up anything, take a shower or even brush your teeth.

Everyone have a great day today.
  • Good Evening! Another very windy cold, (28 degrees this morning) day here with some sunshine in the mix. We headed for Sioux Falls to see Ian's mini musical play. All of the sixth graders took part and it was cute, they had fun doing it and it was fun to watch. A long drive for a 45 minute play! We have a couple detours so they take us out of our way and slows us down. Now I have laundry in both the washer and dryer. Tomorrow is another busy day for me. It's my morning to work the gift shop and then the volunteer luncheon which counts as our volunteer training for the year. Both Maddy and Kolby have soccer games so will head that direction when I get home. I'm hoping to go early enough to do some birthday shopping for Beth.

Maggie, our sump pump which rarely runs, has been running. There are wet streets around town from pumps running. No one can figure it out because we didn't have much snow nor rain. Farmers are getting antsy but the soil is too cold yet, probably still wet in spite of the wind.

"Gma," I sure hope the sewer is fixed by now! What a pain in the bu** for you! I can't imagine the mess you have. We play 500, and the cards were lousy last night! I had two good hands, got one and made it while the other one was overbid -- I had no trump cards for that hand. We just enjoy visiting while we play and during dessert and coffee afterwards.

I hear the dryer buzzing so need to fold undies. Hope you all have had a nice day and enjoy the evening!
  • Good morning gals. Sorry I didn't get in here yesterday but Tuesday afternoon and night was awful and I only had 3 hours of sleep.

As of the time Jack got home from work on Tuesday they still hadn't come to fix the sewer problem. There were so many sticks, rocks and trash in it that it couldn't be snaked out it had to be blown out so they had to contact someone else. Jack said he wasn't going to let me go through another night of **** so he said find a hotel no matter the cost. Unfortunately, the NBA playoffs are going on and hotels are booked solid. I finally found a room at Hampton Inn for $200!!!! I booked it and we packed and went over there and checked in. We opened the door and the smoke smell hit me in the face. Someone had been smoking in the room and the hotel is non smoking!!! I was livid and called down and the woman said they were booked solid but she would take care of us. Nothing! They didn't refund our money, no one came up and sprayed or anything. I tried sleeping there and put up with it for about 3 hours but by then my throat hurt, my eyes were itching, etc. Jack had already gone to bed so I told him I would come back and get him the next morning I was going home. I came home in the middle of the night and found they had the sewer problem fixed so we had water and such again and slept until 4 AM, got up, took out the trash, did up some dishes, put a load of clothes in the washer and went to pick up Jack. I looked like you know what, but I didn't care. I packed us up, told him to meet me out front and I was taking the keys back. They had went ahead and billed us the full amount so I took the receipt downstairs and I unloaded on the night manager. I was shaking from not enough sleep and crying and told him no one should have to go through what we were going through and be ripped off for $200 for a $100 room then get a room that is reeking of smoke smell and being told they would help us and no help came. I went on and on, not screaming but I was crying and shaking and the security guard just stood there with his mouth open. The guy said he would refund our money and I told him thank you, but I told him they have no right to try and rent that room to anyone else before they shampoo carpets, drapes, bedding, couch etc. I turned and limped off with my cane and told him to have a good day. We shall see if I get my money back and if I don't, I am going to raise the roof on the phone with the general manager. So, I slept a lot of the day away yesterday except I did get all the laundry caught up and go things back to normal, cleaning the bathroom and getting rid of the smell, etc.

I think it is going to take me a couple days to get back to normal. I haven't eaten properly since Saturday and my colon is messed up because of it too so I have to get back to eating properly and get things back to normal physically too. I am still so tired so will probably nap today some.

Jean: Thomas's high school had a brawl in the cafeteria day before yesterday. I just read about it in the news. I guess it all focused on one girl and a gang beat her up in the cafeteria. Something like 7 kids got expelled and a bunch suspended. I guess it is pretty rare for this high school to have problems and they upped security a lot after this. It is sad all this goes on even in the good schools. Kids have no respect for themselves or others. Sounds like you had a nice time with the kids. Thomas just got back from New Orleans with his parents. His dad did a half ironman over the weekend. Here is my long legged boy waiting for who knows what. He is going to be 15 in June. I just can't believe they are growing up so fast. He told his mom the other day he was going to be a lifetime bachelor.

    Everyone have a good Thursday.

  • Good Afternoon! The sun is shining, NO wind, and it is warming up! It was cold at the soccer games last night; I was really glad I had my winter coat. Maddy's team had to play 8th graders again. And again her team was outsized and outplayed, BUT Maddy's team scored at the very end and no other team had scored against this team. Kolby made two points for his team so he was happy. They lost by one. This morning was my monthly coffee date. I'm hoping to catch up with the volunteer director so I can pick up the bounced check. I plan to take it to the bank and see if there is money in the account. If not, I will take it to the police station! It's $65 the gift shop will "eat" and I don't think we should just let it go without at least trying to get the money. The loser hasn't returned phone calls so assume she could be bouncing checks where she lives, which is 25 miles from here.

"Gma," I'd say you have had more than your fair share of stress and frustration with this whole sewer thing. I'm glad it is now fixed! I hope you get the room refund! We got stuck in a smoking room many years ago. Unfortunately we were out in the middle of Nebraska, late at night, so had no choice but to stay there or sleep in the car. We hadn't made an advanced reservation so that was our fault. It is scary the things that go on in schools, from bullying to physical threats and actions against other students and staff. Thanks for sharing the picture, Thomas is a handsome young man. Ian just had his physical for baseball and he is 5'8", 147#. It seems like yesterday he was just a toddler! They do grow up so fast!

I need to keep moving and make the phone call. The dust bunnies are piling up and the dust is visible too. Hope you all enjoy a terrific Thursday!
  • Good morning to you all. Going to be a nice day here today then looks like hot, sticky and rainy tomorrow. This weekend is commissary day and I have my sewing class tomorrow.

I am still nervous about the sewer thing so stand and stare at the toilet every time I flush the darn thing to make sure it isn't going to back up. I just hope the little snot that did this doesn't do it again.

My dish towel for tomorrow's class for my apron. Got a giggle since I own a huge number of shoes.

I am mailing my money for the tickets to my alumni banquet today. It will be fun to see a lot of my classmates. Because of the size of schools where I grew up we have one big banquet every year for all the graduating classes. Each year gets their own table(s) and then you can wander around to talk to kids in other classes too. They have a dinner, dance and a quiet room where you can go if you want to talk and not have to deal with the band. Oh yeah, we have a live band too. All for the extraordinary price of $22 apiece. I imagine we will have polish dinner as it is at the Catholic church there in South Bend. It is sort of a specialty in our area. A vast majority of the caterers do it for weddings and such. We have a lot of middle Europeans living up there and I think that is why it caught on. It is usually, mashed potatoes and gravy, noodles, sweet sour cabbage, sausage, fried chicken or baked steak, green beans and rolls. It is served as a buffet usually. They have a cocktail hour the hour before dinner but I am sure it is stuff like rum and coke or things like that not a real full bar, but then I rarely drink anything alcoholic except on the cruise once in awhile. Diet Coke is ok with me. I am looking forward to it. Some of the gals on my FB page I haven't seen since I graduated.

Jean: I can understand making a mistake in your checkbook or even being desperate and needing groceries knowing you didn't have money and praying it wouldn't go through until your paycheck got in the bank, but a hospital gift shop? I mean what in heaven's name did you want so badly in a hospital gift shop you needed to kite a check? You are going to be lucky if you see the money, but I agree if you can't get her on the phone, you need to turn it over to the police to handle. She can't just get away with it. WTG Kolby! Thomas is about 5'10" and weighs about what Ian does. He is a skinny kid all arms and legs, but he runs like the wind. He plans on running cross country next year, which starts before the school year and he couldn't do it this year as he wasn't enrolled before their practices started. I sure miss them being little. Jackson will be 8 in June.

Well girls, time to get out of here. Have a nice weekend all.

  • GOOD AFTERNOON IN APRIL MAGNOLIAS
    ☺♫

It is a good afternoon Magnolias. I am using one of Will's computers to post this and mine is in the shop. It developed a clicking sound that wasn't very loud but annoying. Took it to the Teckie and he said my hard drive was going bad so he is fixing it up for me ~ putting a solid state drive in it. I'll be back later after I learn better how to use this computer.

Always remember ~ Never, never, never give up
  • Good Afternoon! We had a rainy start to the day but the sun is out now. It has been an interesting day to say the least. I went to get my nails done first thing. Then I stopped by the hospital to pick up the bounced check. Originally I was told it was for insufficient funds but turned out to be a closed account, so forgot about going to the bank. I drive to the town and visit the sheriff's office only to find out that I needed to send a registered letter and process it in this county since the check was written here. It was almost lunch time by the time I got back home so called the local sheriff's office first and she told me to call the police station. That person said I had to wait ten days after receipt of the registered letter before they would take over. I called the volunteer director to get a hospital letterhead so the letter would look official. She said she had a form letter I could use. When I stopped to get that, the accountant was in the office and said they employ a collection company and I could turn it in to them. I don't know why the volunteer director didn't know that in the first place. Now it's out of my hands and I've wasted most of the day! I have no ambition to start any projects now. Zowie has a game at 10:30 tomorrow so we will be on the road early.

"Gma," that is a cute dish towel. You need one that says "and handbags!" Your class reunion sounds like fun. I hope there is a good turnout for all the work the classmates have put into it. Kolby had another good game last night. People sitting near made comments about him not knowing she was his mom.

Maggie, hope your computer is fixed soon!

The mailman just went by and I need to take in the neighbor's mail while she is gone for a few days. Enjoy the rest of a fantastic Friday!
  • Good morning to you all. Just a quick note as I have to get going so I can leave at nine for class. I was close to being late last time from traffic so want to get there in plenty of time to get set up and such. I do hope I do well on the pj pants as they are for Thomas.

We got a bite of dinner last night then ran to Kroger as we needed bread and milk. It was driving rain all evening so Jack said to sit in the car and he ran in and got what we needed. As slow as I am anymore, especially on wet surfaces, I would have been drenched. We came home and put stuff away and watched the Cubs game. It went into extra innings so I didn't get in bed until 10:30 and was up at 4:45. yawn....

Maggie: Oh bummer. Hope it isn't too expensive for you to get fixed.

Jean: Holy cow what a run around. Since you told her why in the devil didn't she just say they had a procedure. I would imagine like you said before the woman was writing checks anywhere they would take them without checking. Again to write it for stuff from a hospital gift shop is weird, but then it wouldn't surprise me if she wasn't planning on selling everything for cash money. I saw that LA past a law that you can't buy or sell anything with cash if it is second hand merchandise, ie a flea market or garage sale, even like Goodwill or Salvation Army, etc. Come to find out though, they exempted pawn shops! I guess the underlying whole thing was so that Louisiana could collect state tax on items though the idiot to did the law said it was to cut down on black marketing for drug dealers. Ya, right.

Well gotta go. Have a good one all.
  • Good morning, ladies. We are in the midst of a cold spell so 53 degrees today and tomorrow and then back to the 70s. It's also raining so a dreary day.

We had Glory Bee Thursday which is always fun. One of the ladies made me gluten free brownies. They are all good cooks and very thoughtful. Another brought a salad with a lemon dressing. It was really good so she is sending me the recipe.

Yesterday was Needle in Hand Bee, then I went to visit one of our members who had foot surgery on Tuesday. She has to stay in bed for 3 weeks with her foot propped up above her heart. She had a bad reaction to the anesthesia and was still feeling nausea and dizzy so can't concentrate to read or do any quilting. We're trying to make sure she gets visitors every day to help her pass the time. After that I went to Nora's with Glory and we knitted. My scarf will be finished today. Nora wants me to teach the Thursday knitting group to knit socks so I will do that.

Faye, this will make you LOL but I'm teaching myself to knit the continental way left-handed. The arthritis is bad in my right hand and wrist but my left is still good so I'm watching youtube and following along. I need to go to Baa Baa Yarn and get some sock yarn and a set of bamboo double pointed needles and a circular bamboo for those who might like to do socks that way. Glory is allergic to wool so I need to find yarn for her.

Jean, I don't know how people get the nerve to write bad checks. I'm sure a policeman would be standing behind me to arrest me as soon as I handed it over. The same with shoplifting. It's good the problem is no longer yours.

Maggie, I'll be the MH is really nicely organized by now and ready to go!

Have a wonderful day - I need to do housework.
  • Good Afternoon! We left home at 7:30 this morning in fog, wind, and heavy mist. It wasn't raining at the soccer site so kept going. It was windy and cold there, glad the games only last an hour. Zowie hustled once again; her goalie stood and watched the ball roll by her into the net. Needless to say they lost again with no score. The game was in a smaller town east of Sioux Falls so after we ate lunch, we headed to the cabin. Guys were putting docks in the water but "our" guy wasn't one of them. Bob wanted to be sure the city had the water turned on as well as the electricity. A long time riding in the car. Monday night is back to Sioux Falls for Ian's concert. Just found out Maddy has a concert the same night and I feel bad we will miss her's. We missed Ian's in January when we were in California.

"Gma," I hope you enjoyed the sewing class and your pj pants turned out just fine. I had not heard about buying and reselling new things. Sounds like too much work to me! I do know that some of the local garage sale lovers like to buy and then have their own sales. Not my idea of fun. I knew the hospital had a collections company but figured it was for patient charges. Come to find out the chef in the Bistro was getting bad checks for $5 and up, so he is the one who put the collection process into action. Even if we don't get any money, I have the satisfaction that "her" bu** will be in the wringer.

Susan, I'm really tired of this ugly weather we are having. We are supposed to be in the 70s starting Wednesday. I'm ready! I feel for your friend who had the foot surgery. Bob's secretary has to have her knee redone because the "peg" going into the bone is crooked. She was all ready and her heart started beating irregularly, so they couldn't do it. Because of her knee she can't do the treadmill stress test, so has to see a cardiologist to be sure she can have the surgery. Meanwhile the orthopedic surgeon is worried about infection setting in, and if that happens he will insert a spacer and she will be on IV antibiotics until the infection is gone. That could be weeks or months, and she is to stay off her feet not putting any weight on that knee. He is worried the bone might crack or break. I know I would look guilty while writing a bad check!

I have sheets in the washer and should be ready for the dryer. That will be the extent of my efforts for today I think. Enjoy the rest of your day!
  • Simply Sunny Saturday
GOOD AFTERNOON IN APRIL MAGNOLIAS ☺♫
It is a beautiful day here in the neighborhood. For dinner we BBQed some ribs and had them with 2p+ biscuits and asparagus with enough to have a re-run for lunch tomorrow. I have some other needful things arraigned in containers to take out to the MH and find a home for them.

Always remember ~ Never, never, never give up
  • Good morning gals. Going to be lovely today. We have commissary day today and I feel icky so hopefully will be better as the day goes on. I had not had any female problems but it has popped up again so guess I am going to have to go in and have the tests ugh!

Here are my projects. Sorry about the apron. I had thrown it into the washer and it was made to fit me so it doesn't show too well. The pj pants are for Thomas for his birthday and are camo with boy scout patches on them. I still have to hem them but we ran over a half hour anyway I was tired so said I would finish them at home. I don't think they look too bad.

Susan: That is funny about your knitting. I really am going to have to get rotary cutters for sewing as my hands were aching by the time the class was done. I know one thing I hate working with bias tape. My pants I zippadee dodahed through but putting that bias tape on my apron was horrible. I had to tear out the whole thing and got behind. Socks are great once you learn whatever method. Are you doing dpn's or magic loop method?

Maggie: Sounds like you had a great dinner and leftovers to boot.

Jean: Wow it is cabin time again. Seems like you have so many things to do every year to get it opened up. Hopefully your weather will start warming up so the lake warms up.

    Gotta go gals.

  • Good Afternoon! The sun is shining, NO wind, and it's 65 degrees outside. Pretty soon I can open the sliding doors when the sun gets around. We went to early church, mainly because I had to pick up the money and Bob wanted to go to a fishing meeting. A couple that goes to Canada would like to get a church group going. There were a few wives there, but the trip is nothing like Bob has done before: gone for a whole week, get yourself there, bring your own food, no guides, etc. He likes having a guide and doing shore lunch at noon and restaurant at night. I have no interest in going but there are a couple guys going without wives, so he wouldn't be the only one alone. I have a feeling he will try to put his regular trip together instead. I have read the paper and was set to do some laundry when he decided to pull the sump pump to clean the lint and soap scum off. Pork chops are waiting for the grill at some point.

Maggie, how do you fix your asparagus? Maybe I have asked you before, but when I have fixed it, it never tastes as good as when someone else fixes it. Sounds like you are having fun arranging and rearranging things for the motorhome.

"Gma," Ian would love the pj pants! I'd say you did "good" on both projects. How did you get the towel design transferred to the apron? This could well be our last summer for the cabin. That makes me sad for Beth and Bob; Beth because she loves it like Bob's mom did, and Bob because his grandpa built it and he grew up with it.

Bob just stuck his head in the door and said he was turning on the grill so guess it is dinner time. Hope you all are enjoying a nice day!
  • Good afternoon ladies. I never did get in here this morning and then completely forgot about it as I was trying to get laundry done and the downstairs cleaned.

We have a ballgame on tonight so will probably watch it later.

Jean: I take olive oil and coat my asparagus with it then shake on parmesan cheese and minced garlic and bake for 20 minutes at 350. We like it that way. As for the apron, I bought the kitchen towel with the saying on it already. We just cut armpit curves and sewed bias tape on it to make the apron. Hope you enjoyed your chops. We had ham for dinner tonight. I have never been a lake person since being a grown up, but I loved going to the lake when I was a kid. That was before they got polluted and you couldn't swim in them any longer. Now I don't do the ocean either without swim shoes on. Creeps me out.

    Everyone have a good evening.
