I have worked hard to get down to my current weight of 121 and now I am just within the "healthy" range, but on the high side of it. I know that I am short but holy cow! Even at 126 pounds, I still wore a 6 petite, yet was "overweight." I know, I know. The BMI is meant to be a health indicator, not looks or vanity, but it still hit me hard. I know that I probably will not look the way I did when I was 25 and 103 pounds but I think 115 or so is realistic. Yet, it still seems a heavy goal weight to me at just under 5 feet tall. Thanks for letting me vent and let me know what you guys think of a realistic goal weight!

I don't put much stock in either the BMI or modern clothing sizes when it comes to us shorties. I'm just a little taller than you and according to the BMI I was at a healthy weight when I reached 130 pounds. Did I feel or look healthy at that weight? I did not. To me someone at a healthy weight looks slender and toned with a flat stomach and slim legs. At 130 pounds I was pudgy. My mid-section did not really begin to slim down until I got below 125 pounds. Yet, at 128 pounds I was wearing a loose size four, and at 118 pounds, a zero. After that I began shopping in the kids' (and by that I don't mean juniors) department. It's not fun to be fifty years old and wearing clothes meant for fifth graders, especially since I still have weight to lose.

I used a different system than the BMI to calculate my goal weight. Take 100 pounds for a five foot woman and add five pounds for each inch over. So that gave me 105 to which I added another five pounds because I'm large framed according to all the usual tests.

This is my 2nd week of this new lifestyle. I'm not dieting, I'm eating healthy, exercising every day, and feeling incredible! I have a long way to go, but this time it's different. I have a huge support group and my attitude is different.

Hi! I'm just a little bit shorter but not by much. :D

Hi everyone! I'm 5'2 and trying to get down 115, ideally 110.

MarriedLadyTara 03-28-2011 06:05 PM

Hi all. I'm new here. I'm only 4'9", which is pretty damn short. I have A LOT of weight to lose, and it's pretty daunting. Still, I'm down almost 30 pounds since October, and I'm plugging away!

Ekicna 03-28-2011 06:22 PM

Great job with the weight loss Tara!

Shay 03-30-2011 07:43 PM

Checking in at 4'11", lol.

PinkFairy 03-31-2011 01:36 PM

Yay! A group for us, shorties!
I am new here also. 6 years ago, I had my 1st baby and gained weight and it stayed.
About 2 weeks ago, I got on the scale and saw I was 170, I knew it was time to *really* lose the weight. So far, I've lost about 12 lbs. I am doing intervals on the elliptical 2x a day for 15 minutes each.

I am glad I found this thread. I am 4'11 and I was beginning to feel like I was the only one under 5'0. What exercises are you guys doing and how many calories are you eating per day?

Exercises--I do personal training 2x/wk, yoga 1x, strength/core class 1x, ab class 1x, and try to do cardio only 1x/wk

Eating--I don't count calories. I basically eat when hungry, stop when satisfied. This equals to eating whole minimally processed foods for 3 meals and 2-3 snacks a day and tons of water.

Wow Shay! Thats awesome! Unfortunately I do not have the $ for a PT at this time. I am currently doing c25k and Jillian Michaels on my non-running days. But I think I need more, I cannot drop lower than the calories I am eating without feeling dizzy(1200) so I think I need to pump up the exercise! I am totally impressed that you do all of those! Thanks for the motivation:D

scjp926--Thanks! I am planning to add even more exercise starting this week. I want to kick it into high gear for summer.

Shay 05-07-2011 07:45 AM

I did add more exercise and I am doing okay. I'm trying to decide what I want my goal weight to be. How did everyone determine that for themselves? I haven't checked the BMI chart in a while (I'm not a really a believer in it. Just curious) but I believe for 4'11" the ideal weight is like 99-119. I'm not sure I want to be that small. My goal is fit & lean not skinny.

cantgetenoughchoc 05-07-2011 09:15 AM

The truth? I'm 5' and 1/2" - but to anyone else, I'm 5'1". :P
There are a few advantages for being small, but the CURSE is how easily we can look overweight! I think small can look cute - but unfortunately fat and short isn't cute. :P That's why I'm doing something about it. I'd love to be petite all over!
Glad to see a group for the shorties. :)

Shay 05-08-2011 01:23 PM

So true cantgetenoughchoc! It is so easy to look like you weigh more than you actually do when you are short.
