Red - I'm sooooo very sorry for your loss. You have certainly been through so much. I hope your slightly positive moments blossom into better days. I am here for you, my friend.

I've been feeling ill lately, so I haven't been up to being officially challenged, although I have been staying on plan. I went to Zumba Friday night and Saturday morning, then developed a fever and dizziness...but still had lots of errands to run. I slept most of yesterday after I got some website work out of the way. I feel a bit of bronchial congestion...so I'm debating about Zumba tonight.

I'll be back later after I come up with an official 21 day challenge.

Just finished a marathon read from page 27 of the previous thread :hyper:.

Hello everyone! My goodness this thread has gotten VERY active while I've been away.

Welcome to everyone who's new to me :welcome2:.

Congrats to all on your successful challenges and cheers for hanging in there on the tough ones.

I'll jump back in with my new challenges that I'll start on Wednesday:

I Love Me - 0 days completed (0/1 pause taken)
Exercise (at least 20 toe tap jacks if nothing else) - 0 days completed (0/3 pauses taken)
15 minutes of decluttering - 0 days completed (0/3 pauses taken)

 and :goodvibes to all.

redballoon 04-05-2010 07:44 PM

No Smoking Day 1 completed No Pauses Taken
No Booze Day 1 completed No Pauses Taken

and another challenge...

Minimal Sugar Challenge (no sugar that I can refuse without too much trouble) Day 0 completed No Pauses Taken -- I decided on this because it's ME I want to control, not just the sugar. The little bit people ask me to eat is minimal and never the problem. It's always just been harder to stop after I would eat a little, but I am going to do it and stop allowing excuses for my own behavior.

Thanks diyana. I hope you feel better soon! Thanks everyone, good luck and keep it going! I will try to keep somehow connected.

Day 15/21 - no chips - DONE.

Still no caffeine, and no McD's. I don't want to make these actual challenges, though, because I may change my mind at any moment on these things. Not ready to rule them out entirely.

New challenges:
Exercise! I am about to cancel my gym membership - I don't go enough to justify it and with the weather getting nicer we're outside a lot, so I'm hoping this will help. Yesterday we did yard work for ages, and now my back is super sore, but it was great at the time. So, because I hate failing at things, anything remotely close to being called "exercise" will count.
Day 1/21 was a raging success. I moved eight billion tonnes of earth. (really, I started digging a spot for a vegetable garden, but it FELT like 8 billion tonnes of earth).
Less salt - I'm going to try to ease off the prepared sauces, the added salt, the processed food that I occasionally splurge on (bye bye gourmet burgers that we buy premade from the store...) and see how I feel. Because lately, even with the weight loss, I feel all bloaty and blech. And I definitely attribute some of that to the stack of prepared food I bought last week in preparation for the bf's brother's visit. I don't know how to quantify "less salt" which is why I'm just saying "less". Last night I had shrimp with a store-bought curry sauce, which was equally delicious and bloatifying. So that challenge will start today!

mary - congrats on day 21 of no candies! That's awesome!

Red - minimal sugar sounds like an excellent challenge. I hope the rest of your life settles down. You are not having an easy time of it right now.

move - Hi!

michelle - Hope Zumba was a go, and that you're feeling in full health again!

redballoon 04-06-2010 08:34 AM

Well, am calling it clear on all three for today. I really want to break one or two or all three of these challenges right now, but think I will just do a bit more work and get some sleep. Couldn't sleep much last night, especially being hounded by emails on my phone near 10 p.m. and phone calls at 2 a.m. The madness continues. Sigh.

No Smoking Day 2 completed No Pauses Taken
No Booze Day 2 completed No Pauses Taken
Minimal Sugar Challenge Day 1 completed No Pauses Taken

**************

mary -- Congratulations on 21 days without candies!! :cp: :cheer: :encore: :cheer: :cp: GOOD FOR YOU!!!!

Charlie -- Thanks, I'm trying to just keep my head down and take whatever work comes my way. You're doing great on your challenges and I like your go-for-success way of looking at them. We have to be flexible in raising the bar. I get totally puffed up by salt too but I think that's because I rarely have any at all and dig in to a bag of salty popcorn or something. I am a person of extremes and actually thrive on it. Ah.....maybe not the extremes my life is currently seeing though.... :^: The other thing that really bloats me is sugar, so if you're hitting the sucrose hard, that could be the reason for your....how did you put it?.....your "bloatifying" experiences! :lol3:

Hi everyone -

April showers bring May flowers, and we're having our share of showers this week. We had thunderstorms last night, and more coming today and tonight. The grass and the bulbs will enjoy it, even if the doggies do not. I say, as long as we don't have to shovel it, it's okay by me. Despite a little upper chest congestion, I chose to do 1/2 hour of Zumba last night, and that was enough. Then went home, showered, ate and watched TV with DH. I'm planning on doing another 1/2 hour Zumba class tonight, but I think I might skip the hour long advanced class tomorrow evening and tackle spring cleaning in one or two rooms instead.

Red - Sorry to hear you didn't sleep well last night. Late emails and early phone calls? And it doesn't sound like they brought good news, though I sincerely hope they did. You're off to a great start on your challenges! Are you still getting to the gym when you can?

Kay Lee - :welcome:

AppleBlossom - Welcome Back! 6 pints of water is a lot. If you're not used to drinking that much water, start off slower. Good for you for running! That's awesome. I, too, am learning that while exercise is wonderful and can help...caloric intake is a major part of the weight loss puzzle.

MoveMoveMove - Welcome Back! I like that you've added decluttering. I need to add that too.

Mary - Congrats on the 3 pound weight loss! And that's not a LITTLE loss, it's a BIG loss! And :bravo: on completing your no candies challenge despite all the tempting Easter candies around! You rock! :cp: :cp: :cp: :woohoo: :cheer2:

CharlieBaby - Good for you for resisting the soda temptation on Friday and SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETING YOUR CHALLENGE! :woohoo: :bravo: :cp: :cp: :cp: 100 mile diet? Haven't heard of that one. I'll have to google it. Gardening/yard work is DEFINITELY exercise and you can most certainly count it. Good for you for working on reducing your salt intake. I've thought of cancelling my gym membership now that the weather is getting nicer...because I don't like the thought of exercising indoors when it's gorgeous out, especially since we have so few months of good weather here (same as you, I imagine). But, then again, I'm addicted to Zumba. So I'm going to keep the membership since I do go nearly every day to Zumba, and then spend time outside before and after class and, of course, on weekends.

A big  to Asher and anyone else I may have missed!

diyana -- just saw you in here before I hit the hay. Yes, I got to the gym today. Had little time but went anyhow, then hurried home in time to churn out some work in time for deadline! Hurrah!

oh and Kay Lee, Welcome!! :welcome3:

diyana 04-06-2010 10:37 AM

Red - Good for you for getting to the gym! :cheer2: Hope you have a very good night's sleep! Churning out work in time for a deadline is a wonderful thing! Sweet dreams.

CharlieBaby 04-06-2010 10:46 AM

Michelle - I understand your Zumba love! It's awesome having a class at the gym that you look forward to and enjoy. I'm hopeful that I'll be able to force myself to budget time and cash in the fall to join again (and make it worthwhile), but for the moment, I'm loving the gardening and the hikes and the trips to the bf's school for a little private family basketball or soccer night (dating the jr high school VP has perks, like keys to the school).

The 100 Mile Diet is a challenge that a couple tried for a year back in 2005, blogged about, wrote a book about, and then challenged a whole town to try. The idea is to get all your food from a 100 mile radius. Discussed it with the bf yesterday, and both of us decided that we are far too spoiled and in love with our spice shelves and olive oil (...and sesame oil, and ginger, and mangoes, etc.) to go all gung-ho on this. Decided to try to find local sources for protein and fruits & veggies instead. We already share a cow with his parents (i.e. they know a local farmer who slaughters a cow and butchers it up and we split the cost), so we're trying to track down local farmers of pigs, chickens, and I'm gonna start flirting with my neighbour the lobster fisherman to see where that gets us ;-)

Red - Hooray for the gym!! And being deadline ready!

diyana 04-06-2010 12:22 PM

Charlie - Hmmmmm, 100 miles, huh? I like the idea in theory, and I do buy more locally grown produce when the farmers' markets start (soon I hope). But that would mean giving up bananas and clementines. Not to mention...I'm not sure how many farms around here raise beef cattle....as we are America's Dairyland. I was hoping it would be something like all the yummy foods you could eat more if you walked 100 miles a month or week or whatever.

Shad 04-06-2010 07:39 PM

Morning all,
I have been doing a bit of a stealth challenge since I got back from Melbourne. I set myself a challenge to walk first thing everymorning for at least half an hour. I'm pleased to say that today was day 8 for me.

I'm thinking up some more challenges that I can achieve while I am here at home and waiting for work to arrive. I will start another one on day 14 of this one.

Hope everyone is doing okay. I haven't got time to go back and read right now. Keep up the good work

Walking challenge - Day 8 completed. No pauses.

CharlieBaby 04-07-2010 07:49 AM

Hello all,
Day 16/21 no chips - Done. I was in the bulk food store yesterday and was very tempted to buy some organic, puffy looking spiced chip thingies, but they clearly said on them "potato chips", so I put them back on the shelf.
Day 1/21 less salt - Done. We had steak (bbq with a spice rub we made) and potatoes (roasted with olive oil and, um, kosher salt) but I did avoid processed foods. I think that's how I want this challenge to work - me adding my own seasoning with reason, but trying not to eat much in the way of prepared stuff.
Day 2/21 exercise - FAIL. It was cold and rainy last night when I got home, so I nixed the idea of digging the rest of the garden, and cosied up on the couch instead to read. It was glorious. But not remotely physical. I wonder if I should allow pauses in this challenge...

I had a half cup of decaf coffee yesterday. It tasted wonderful, but I noticed it was a struggle to get to sleep last night. That could also have something to do with the sugary apple fritter I shared with the bf after supper, though. I think I'll avoid any coffee - decaf or otherwise (because even decaf isn't caffeine free, right?) today, just to be safe. I love my sleep. I don't like having to wait for it.

Am so glad it's already Wednesday. Hope everyone is having a good day!

diyana 04-07-2010 08:07 AM

Red - Hope your work is going well and you are meeting those deadlines. :)

Shad - Good for you for doing so well on your walking challenge, and I've heard you're working hard in the house and in the garden too!

Charlie - Great job putting back the organic chip thingies. I think it makes sense to add your own seasoning within reason...and cut back on processed foods. Something I need to do but is difficult because I dislike cooking. As for exercise...definitely allow yourself some pause days so you don't set yourself up for failure. Also, make contingency plans for indoor exercise during inclement weather.

 to everyone! I hope you're all doing well!

***************
I did 1/2 hour of Zumba last night, plus some weights, crunches and a couple planks. I'm not up for the hour long advanced Zumba tonight, so I'll either get my cardio by taking a Step class or doing some seriously cleaning/tidying/organizing.

Journal everything AND count WW points - 0 of 0 pauses taken - Day 1/21
64 ounces of water - 0 of 0 pauses taken - Day 1/21
5 servings of fruits and veg - 0 of 0 pauses taken - Day 1/21
15 minutes of decluttering - 0 of 0 pauses taken - Day 1/21
Stay within WW points - 0 of 3 pauses taken - Day 1/21
30 min. (at least) of cardio - 0 of 3 pauses taken - Day 1/21

1 minute of planks - 0 of 3 pauses taken - Day 1/21

Day 9 completed no pauses.

Back later. Need to get some work done before it gets too hot
