4myloves 01-03-2007 09:14 AM

I'll try to post a poll with the next thread.

As I said, I'm brain-dead this morning.

I hope everyone enjoyed ringing in the New Year. Stewart and I went to bed early (he bought alcohol and I got a buzz like I haven't had since I was in college!!).

Vogue, I'm glad to hear FUZZ is doing well. I'll bet he's a cutie--post a pic? Great about the MP3 player. I wish I'd known you were saving the codes, I threw away a ton of them.

Allison, I thought of you when President Ford's funeral procession was in CA. Your weather looks better than mine (and Gayle's!).

Dee, have fun deciding on the new car!!

Hello to Suzy, Janice, Debbi, Shelley and Sherry

gdeann 01-03-2007 09:21 AM

Allison, congrats to Dana for passing her test! I bet she is thrilled!

Janice, happy to see you here posting. Don't worry about the weight gain, just get right back on track and you will be fine. How are you feeling with your joint pain?

Sher, glad to see you back again! How is Drew?

Cheryl, thank you for being concerned sweetie. We survived the storm in better shape then most. My brother who lives on a farm will be without electricity/water for about 3 weeks. Thank goodness he has a few windmills for the cattle.

Dee, you live such a calm, relaxing life...may I join you? LOL!

Shelley, how are you enjoying the new bike?

Suzy, GREAT JOB STAYING OP!

We pooled some Christmas money together and purchased the Gazelle Edge from Walmart. It is a smaller version of the Gazelle Elite but it will work just fine for us. I think it is a pretty decent piece of exercise equipment for the $100.00. I know today I have a few tender areas, so it must be doing a little bit of good on this out of shape bod.

Well, I need to head out, just wanted to check in and let you know we survived the storm and I should be posting on a regular basis now.

alinnell 01-03-2007 10:06 AM

Good morning everyone!!!

Dana walks around with a smirk--I'm so happy she is happy. She even came home last yesterday and arranged with a friend to go to the gym. She says she gained 15 pounds for my 8 since Thanksgiving. I don't know if that is true or not, but at least she isn't discouraged and is doing something about it.

It was such a great morning! Dana thinks I'm crazy for not sleeping in now that I have a free hour in the morning. Instead, I got up and exercised for over 30 minutes!!! I got my ipod back from Dana (she bought her own with Xmas money) and I had tunes while I worked out. The dog still gets funny when I get on the floor for my sit-ups!

DS (Nicky) even got to sleep in this morning and we had breakfast together. Now I have half an hour to myself before taking him to school and myself to work.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day!!!

Cheryl, hope your brain wakes up!!

Gayle, glad to hear you weathered the storm!

Janice, I'm cold a lot too, especially when I don't have my glass of wine each evening (so that means I'm going to be cold this month!!!) Some people think it's an iron deficiency. I don't know myself. And the temporary warmth from the cayenne (I drank it in water--not in a pill) didn't last for more than 5 minutes. I don't know if it would warm up your DD.

Thanks everyone for the cheers for Dana!

vouge09 01-03-2007 04:38 PM

4 myself- Fuzz is so funny today he made this weird face where he crossed his eyes and his mouth was hung open then he sneezed haha. I was all excited thinking the mp3 was coming today when its not coming till the 10th cause of the holidays . oh poo! stupid ground shipping. oh well. I hope the hangovers ok haha.

allison- thats great about the test im so worried about failing mine on the 20th! You know when I put on a pair of socks my dog runs around jumps in circles and goes insane thinking hes going for a walk but I will just be putting on shoes. My dog when I do sit ups he licks my face , sometimes he sits on me, granted hes not a lapdog contrary to what he thinks hes almost 200 lbs . hes german shepard and soem other breeed hes hug so when he sits on me I wanna die! This dog has a mind of his own he thinks hes a chiuaua I swear.

gayle- I almost bougth that once cause I love eliptical but i was afarid it didn't have enough resistance how do you like it?

Has anyone put out theri goals? I think when you say resolutuions your doomed to fail but when its a goal its nicer to say . Nothing much going on here same old same old. I got this cardio dance dvd , I have been doing everyday which reminds me .... Does anyone know any workouts to melt off belly fat? I have belly fat and i know under it I have to have some nice abs the about of crunches and ab work I do but the stupid belly is in the way. any suggestions? Oh and if everyone wouldnt mind lets share what kind of diet we are on cause as much as I love the low carb life style I was just considering to going to a low calorie diet ,and I was just wondering. With low caloires its poisible for me to burn more calories than I eat cause I have done it befroe but I was just curious.

and ive realized soemthing. When i get hungry is when I lose my motivation and end up eating one cookie then going oh there goes my diet . I need to eat healthy foods when I am hungry and then I will be ok.

coles 01-03-2007 08:37 PM

Amy I think you are on the right track. I did low carb for a while but it is so limited and one little thing ruins all your work for the day.
I am doing weight watchers again, it works and each person has different things they enjoy. You just counts your points each day. You soon learn what is low and you can eat lots of low point foods.

SuzyMc 01-03-2007 09:28 PM

My DIL had her ultrasound today and yes...it's another girl! That will make three granddaughters for us. Poor Shawn...I just can't imagine him living with four women!

Vouge ~ My goal for the new year is to reach my goal weight by the time summer gets here and lay on the beach on the fourth of July in a red, white and blue bikini just like Dee's! ;)

I count calories and keep a close watch on portion sizes...it seems to work best for me. I also just started journaling again at the first of the year. I write down everything I eat and how many calories...it really helps keep things in perspective when you have a running total of how much you have eaten!

Stay away from the cookies! Try making out a list of snacks that are under 100 calories and then eat something from the list instead of grabbing a handful of cookies! (If you Google "snacks under 100 calories" you will find lots of lists online!)

Allison ~ I wish I had ambition enough to get up early and exercise every morning. I'm not a morning person though...I just can't see myself walking on the treadmill at 7am and not breaking my neck!

Gayle ~ Enjoy that Gazelle! I'd say anything that motivates you to move is a good thing!

Lynneye 01-04-2007 02:15 AM

Suzy, congrats on baby girl number 3! Three little girls, how special!

Vouge, the biggie for me is having easy snacks to grab when I am hungry. I try to always have carrot sticks, and little 100 calorie pack snacks on hand so I can just grab them. If I am hungry and have to make something, then I grab the cookies too. If the snack is already made, I am ok. One thing I love and always have on hand is sugar free/fat free puddings. They are always made and in the fridge in little cups ready to grab.

Allison, I envy anyone who can get up and exercise. I have to be up for a bit of time before I can eat or do anything. It really takes me some time to start my day!

Gayle, glad you survived the storm! Sounds like it was a bad one. We still have not had winter and there is no winter in sight either! For this snowlover, I HATE it! I heard today, on Jan. 26 we will have broke records for going the longest time with no snow in this area! Not a record I am happy to break!

Rob and I are looking into buying a treadmill. I really think I would use it. We are comparing features and deciding which features we need. With him being diabetic, and I need to lose weight, we really think it would be a good investment.

vouge09 01-04-2007 10:36 AM

coles- I wish weight watchers was free but I dont have any money for that , yeah thats the only things thats hard about lo carb , is if you eat a peice of rbead there goes the diet.

suzy- my goal is by june I want to buy a yellow polka dot bikini that would be great . lala she wore an itsy bitsy tennie weenie yellow polka dot bikini !! haha How effective is the caloire counting like how much weight do oyu lose a month? with atkins I lose 10-sometimes 20 lbs a month. so it kinda works for me but its difficult. a little girl thats great! my sister was talking about having a girl and im like you just had one 2 months ago dont go britney on me! and she was like no in like 5 years I hope I have a girl . Im like ooo ok!haha

Lynn- Thanks . yeah i have seen thos sugar free thingys . I am considering mabey the low calorie thing when I start to maintain more than loose. I dont wanna live forever low carb but I am definatly doing it just for weight loss and then I am going to become a veggitarian. I feel bad about the meat I eat .;-( . A tredmil sounds nice. Once i start work now I am going to join the ymca and go there at 5 before school when I can drive. I already get up then to workout anyways.

gdeann 01-04-2007 11:05 AM

Suzy, congrats on the new baby girl news!!! When is she due?? I like your suggestion of having low cal snacks ready to grab & go, I will be doing a search on the web for some healthful suggestions.

Cheryl, got a little tipsy the other night, huh? LOL! Those Capecodders will do it to you everytime! Enjoy your classes but try not to do too much, ok?

Deb, we have a treadmill which is now at my mothers since her heart attack. If you stay faithful to it, you will see great results. She hops on the thing everyday and has dropped weight plus her cholestrol has lowered into the almost safe range. This is from someone who never could get her cholestrol to drop before. I know exercise has to be the key to the lower level.

Vouge, low calorie will not have the huge weight loss that you will with low carb but on the other hand, you can eat anything you want as long as you stay within calorie range and you won't instantly gain your weight back if you go off plan. If you look at anyone doing a low calorie diet, you will see they are steadily losing, they don't have the regain track record and they are more consistant in staying on plan. WW's is still a low calorie diet, just using points instead of calories to keep track. IMO, WW's & calorie counting is the way to go.

Well, I need to go! Chat later!

alinnell 01-04-2007 11:25 AM

Good morning all!

vogue--I'm an advocate of calories in vs calories out. However you may do it (atkins, low fat, etc.) as long as you cut your overall calories, you should lose weight. I also advocate low fat and whole foods. You get so much more nutrition from a well balanced meal than from a bag of doritos that are the same in calories! AND you don't get as hungry afterward!
And you'll do fine on your driver's test! Just be sure to read the signs and stay within the speed limit. One thing the testers told my DD--when you are in a neighborhood, glance down each street even if you have the right of way to make sure there aren't speeding cars or kids on bikes or skateboards. Also, when you pull into a turn lane, check behind you first to make sure no one is trying to beat you there. She got marked down on those two things, but they were minor.

Suzy--congrats on granddaughter #3! Both sets of my parents (my parents and my inlaws) have 3 granddaughters and 1 grandson. I'm the lucky one who gave them one of each!
I have to confess that I am a morning person! On the other hand, if you need anything done, you'd better not be asking me in the afternoon! I can get twice as much done in the morning than at any time after lunch. And, once dinner is over, expect to see me plunked down in front of the TV or reading my book! I might check my email, but that's about it.

Gayle--how are things at work? Hope everything is looking up. I hope your friend is doing okay also.

Janice--good luck with WW. I've never done it myself, but I have a lot of friends who have had good results with it.

Debbi--good luck choosing a treadmill. I have a Nordic Track that I've had for about 15 years or so. For most of the time I've had it, it gathered dust. I used it faithfully after DS was born 12 years ago and I lost a lot of weight and looked good muscularly. But I fell off the wagon and it took me until just a few weeks ago to get back on the thing! If I were to buy a new piece of equipment, I think I'd be looking for an elliptical. I like the fact that you are doing something with your upper body as well (like my Nordic Track does). But at this point in time, I'll just stick with what I have.

Well, I guess I ought to get to work!!! LOL

vouge09 01-04-2007 01:22 PM

Thanks Gayle but I am kinda thinking I am going to stick with what works right now.

Allison- Thanks I will be sure to do that , I am good about aking my time adn checking things so I am not all too scared. I understand about the nutritious meals.

as much as I would like to be a journalist, after i get in shape and such I am really intrested in health so I think about being a nutritionist , I think thats something I am intresting , I wonder if anyone knows how much money a nutritionist makes? I should research that more.

I almost injured myself today. I think I over worked out. You know what ? I dont give a S*** what they say that you need 60 mins of cardio a day to lose weight f*** that! I worked out for 45 mins, I did my cardio dance dvd , and decided on well I will go for a 15 minute bike ride. I got on the bike and could feel my legs hurting so I rode home after 5 mins . Im thinking on so 50 isnt that bad whats 10 mins more ? So I start to sit on my pilaties ball and do some crunches for 10 mins when after about 5 im like man I need soem more water. ( I always stay hydrated I drink like 3 bottles of water between my workouts a day) so as Im pouring water I feel dizzy , my head is spinning, I feel like im about to pass out so I leave the water out and stumble to my room and lay down on the bed and I ended up passing out for around 20 mins when I finally awoke I realized what had happen. F*** that 60 mins! I should have ended at my 45 min workout . I dont care what they say , who is they and I would like to meet them and have them explain to me why! Thats ridciulous when i pass oout. a 16 year old teenager who is at a moderate workout level , ( I dont go out running , but I am in fairly good shape , im not a muscular superstar.) passes out due to their advice. well now I know my limits I guess. I am just infuriated.

on the other hand all my working out is starting to pay off . I have small defined line across my outer thigh which I know is a muscle now if I could only get those results on the inner thigh. Also my shoulders and defined and I have an arm muscle cruve. I also love that my chest bones pop out. I think its a thin feature.

alinnell 01-04-2007 01:34 PM

vogue--did you eat before your workout? Sounds to me like you were in need of either some carbs or protein to get you through your workout.

It does sound like your workouts are helping! Muscle definition is a great asset!

ShelleyM 01-05-2007 05:53 AM

Vogue-You need to work up to a longer workout. Don't do too much to quickly, it will only burn you out! You can even do 10 or 20 minutes a couple of times per day instead.

Suzy-Congratulations on the new baby girl to be!

Debbi-I wish I could afford to get an elliptical. I used to have a TM, but it just wasn't my thing. I love to run outdoors, and the TM was too restrictive for me. I think I would be able to cope with an elliptical though. Good luck on finding a TM.

Gayle-How is mom doing?

Sherry-What's going on with Drew? I don't think you mentioned what he is doing now.

I had my colonoscopy yesterday and had a pretty bad reaction to the drugs. When I got home, I threw up and couldn't even get down ice chips. I also kept coughing while I was laying down. I don't remember much, but I finally was up and about at 4:00. Thank goodness I still have a clean bill of health. I don't have to get another one for 2 years.

vouge09 01-05-2007 09:17 AM

I dont know what the problem was!!!! I had eaten like an hour before hand , I dont know but I do know I wont be working out for 60 minutes like that againg for a while. I think I have lost more than on my ticker I need a scale. Now that I have a job I swear I am going to buy one with my first check.

aww shelly that sucks hope you feel better soon so you can hop on that bike again.

Deelite 01-05-2007 01:13 PM

Hi guys, just popping in for a minute. I have been down with the flu. Fortunately I had the flu shot so the symptoms was exhaustion and a sore tummy. I am still feeling weak today but only after I cleanned for an hour and a half. lol Guess I must be feeling pretty good. I am going to lie down now for a bit and see if I have the energy for lane swim this afternoon.

When I am up to it I will post to you all.

4myloves 01-05-2007 01:52 PM

Dee,

Get to feeling better!!!

Lynneye 01-05-2007 04:23 PM

I went for acupuncture today (this was my second time). I am using it to see if it does help with appetite. So far, I can say, it is helping me. Not sure if it is in my mind or not, but I have been leaving food on my plate just about every meal. Also not snacking like crazy at night. Also have more energy. But the best part, has nothing to do with my appetite or diet. On July 1, 2001 I fell and really hurt myself. I hurt my right elbow/hand and left leg. I have had a couple of surgeries from this fall. The worst part was I had no feeling in my pinkie or ring finger on my right hand. (Being right handed this is weird and took some getting used to). I can use the fingers just not feel a thing. Well today, she put a needle in my right elbow and then one in my right shoulder and I had that pins and needle sensation in those two fingers. Once she took the needles out, I could feel. I keep poking and sort of hitting my hand to make sure and I can feel!!
Just wanted to share! I am so excited!

alinnell 01-05-2007 04:45 PM

Debbi~that is so cool that the acupuncture helped get the feeling back in your fingers!

I'm sitting here at work getting ready to go to DD's school and meet with her guidance counselor. It's kindof a two-fold meeting. One, we need to talk about colleges and scholarships and two, we need to discuss her impending failure in AP English. At first I thought she wasn't applying herself (which IS part of the problem) but I found out last night from two other parents that no one in the class has gotten above a D- all semester. Do ya think her grading scale might be a little off? DD wants to drop the class and take regular English (which is fine with me). I still want her to take the AP test (which I am very confident that she will pass). She's struggling in AP chemistry (why she took this is very confusing to me--she wants to to into music education...) but at least she is passing that one. And she's getting A's and B's in everything else including calculus and AP US History. Something tells me it might not be all DD's fault for this poor grade.

Oh, and I moved my ticker. Down to 141.5 this morning. Still 6 pounds to go to get rid of the holiday weight gain, but it's working!!

4myloves 01-05-2007 04:58 PM

Debbi--that is so freakin' cool!!

Allison--good luck with your counselor meeting. I hope the school is willing to evaluate the teacher's methods since no one in the class has above a D. (Except that one exceptional student who's put there to make everyone else look like fidiots--gets an A on every assignment so we KNOW it can be done  )

ShelleyM 01-06-2007 08:12 AM

Debbi-That's great!

Dee-Feel better!

Allison-I hope all went well with the meeting.

Bad news--Mike was laid off yesterday. Back to job hunting. The construction business is so transient. We have a new mortgage payment so things are going to be rough for awhile.

Lynneye 01-06-2007 08:47 AM

Dee hope you are feeling better.

Shelley, hope Mike can find something fast!

Allison how did the meeting go? Sounds like it is the teacher in this case, not your DD. As a teacher, periodically I take a blank test and count how many of the students got that question wrong. I then look and if any question has more than 50% of the students getting it wrong, I really look into it. I have changed grades when I have done this, and given points for that question.

Still have feeling in my hand and it is so amazing! I keep checking!

alinnell 01-06-2007 11:21 AM

Good morning everyone!

The meeting with the counselor went well, I think....I explained that he progress report showed her getting a D-, but he looked up on the computer and it showed her getting "better than a C." I quote that because they are not required to report a good grade on a progress report, just anything less than a C, so basically her progress report is blank for English. There had been a glitch in the system, and the first progress report was sent out with incorrect info. A second was sent, but when there was nothing reported for English, I didn't know if it was correct. So, I'm thinking all is well--she's doing fine. Then DD comes into the office and we tell her that she's getting a C, and she says that the teacher in fact told her she is getting an F.....so I guess my next step is to contact the teacher directly.

In the meantime, we discussed trying to move her from this AP English class to the other AP English class. Can't be done. Her current class is small and the other one is overfull, so they won't do a transfer. We talked about moving her to CP English (college prep~the only other alternative). He explained that there is where she will run into 2 problems: 1) the class is too easy and that's where all the problem students are put (normally, everyone who is interested in graduating takes AP English) and he's afraid she'd get bored and wouldn't like the crowd and 2) if she changes from AP to CP, the UC (University of California like UCLA) schools will not accept it~she'd have to take another half year of CP to make it consistent. That means 2 English classes next year as a senior.

We'll digest the information for a few days and have a talk with her next weekend. She really can't make a change until the end of the quarter which is at the end of January. Meanwhile, he let her borrow a catalog on colleges and universities so she can look up some places for music education degrees. He wants her to go to Oberlin, but I'm afraid she'd freeze up there! And I think it's more geared toward performance not education.

Debbi~I don't think its the tests that get to DD. Its the work. She is a voracious reader, but dislikes having to work. This teacher expects the students to mark up their books with highlights, margin notes, underlining similes and metaphors. She says it distracts her from the content, so she doesn't do it and she gets marked down for it. She had an essay that was due and she didn't do it. So it is mostly her fault. The counselor said he had not heard other kids having problems in the class, but several other Mothers that I know all say their kids are doing poorly in the class (D-). I don't know who to believe. DD had this teacher as a freshman and didn't do very well (managed to squeak out a B in the second half of the year, though). Once I emailed the teacher about her poor performance and the teacher said that DD was probably getting into the wrong crowd at school. Obviously she doesn't know my DD! That part is completely untrue.

Well, I've gone on too far. Everyone have a wonderful weekend!!!

vouge09 01-06-2007 01:24 PM

went and got scale finally today and I weighted in at 178, not sure where it changes my ticker yet up or down but I also know most of that weight has been mucsle cause I can see definination and I have been workign and losing since september so i am happy. got a new workout dvd yesterday from walmart this abs on the pilaties ball thing im going to do in a few minutes... my brother has dedided to go on the atkins and im proud of him ,m hes doing great hes really needs to lose weight , hes driving me cray asking me so many questions about EVERYTHING I wanna kill him but at the same time I can see how devoted he is to losing weight and I am so proud of him. Now theres some pizza hut from last nigth that I didnt take part in thats calling my name , i just need to go and insult the pizza box haah. I wont give in . later ladies.

Allison- the college search has us all frustrated... these days I dont know what i want to do , I want to do journalism but now for some reaosn I find it less appealing and soemthing with animals or medical more enlithening mabey veterninry but I also want to travel the world. I can wy your daughter is stressed out with all those ap classes sheesh!

shelly- things being rough is the story of my life, sorry it had to happen , im sure you will be alright.

dee get better soon./

gdeann 01-06-2007 07:13 PM

We woke to police & ambulance arriving next door this morning. They started taping everything off and then started going door to door to ask questions. To make a long story short, our neighbor passed away last night from a self inflicted gunshot wound. He had an ongoing substance problem. His son and my daughter are friends, once considered very best friends, until a few years ago when they started hanging out in different groups and growing away from each other. The wife has no family, she has lost both her mom & dad over the past few years. I'm not quite sure how we should handle things, we are not close friends, but yet we have kept track of each others family. I guess tomorrow we will go buy items to eat to take over to the house. If any of you have any suggestions, please feel free to suggest away. I have never had to deal with a suicide before and I want to just make sure I am doing everything appropriately. It is so sad to think one can get to the point to make such a decision. My heart aches for him and the family.

SuzyMc 01-07-2007 07:49 AM

Gayle ~ My prayers go out to your neighbor's family! My sister's ex-husband committed suicide in the same manner several years ago a day before my niece's (his daughter) 7th birthday. Suicide is devastating to the entire family, but especially for the kids. There are so many questions left unanswered and a lot of "what if's" and "if only's". It's hard for adults to understand why someone would want to take their own life and nearly impossible for a child. The best thing you can do for the family is be there for them, now and in the future. So many people feel awkward in this situation and don't know what to do or say, so they don't do or say anything...no matter what you do, your kindness and concern will be appreciated!

katyp 01-07-2007 08:57 AM

This seems like a pretty bad time to introduce myself, but this group seems so warm.
gayle i lost my grandpa to suicide. there is going to be a lot of anger and hurt i that house and nobody wil know how to deal with it, sadness you expect when someone dies but when someone takes their own life it makes you so mad.and they may lash out at you or anyone who trys to help but all you can do is be patient and love em through it. My prayers are with you guys.

vouge09 01-07-2007 09:46 AM

my best friend attempted suidcide last year. she has attempted it more than once. I still feel for her but theres only so much I can do , she doesnt resent the signs and she does it tto test how much her body can take. others know about it too so I cant do too much plus I live like 50 miles now from her. She takes sleeping pills to try to die on her sleep, she used to be a cutter, not to mention she used to anerexioc this is the same one that does drugs on top of it, in fact I havet spoke to her in a while and I dont really care. but anyways , I dont know what to say gayle , flowers I guess, and offer your help if they need anything.

welcome kathy

Lynneye 01-07-2007 12:48 PM

Welcome Katy!!

Gayle, not sure what to say, I think a meal or two sent over would be appreciated. Also, if it snows, to just shovel or snowblow the drive and walk way, little helpful things like that. My Goddaughter's husband committed suicide a few years ago, and I remember Paula telling me, no one wanted to talk about Matt anymore. She needed to talk about him, they have two children, 6 and 3 when he did it. The kids needed to talk about Daddy too.

Both Allison and Vouge, if I can help with anything college related let me know. I know all sorts of ins and outs, working there as you know!

Just an update, still have feeling in my hand and it is amazing! My friend who goes with me, says her foot doesn't hurt at all, and some days it is so difficult for her to walk. Well I am taking the decorations down and need to stop procrastinating and get back to work!

alinnell 01-07-2007 01:25 PM

Gayle~don't stop at giving food to your neighbor. Every week or so, stop by with some "necessity" that you picked up at the grocery store. Even something as mundane as toilet paper or pet food. It doesn't have to be expensive, but take it over and they will understand that you care and if you deliver the items in person, they may open up and talk a little. It's devastating to them and knowing that there is someone willing to help and perhaps listen will be helpful. You might even offer to run errands for them.

Debbi~so glad you still have feeling in your fingers! That is totally amazing!

Welcome katyp!

Got to get to my Sunday chores. Everyone have a wonderful day!

lynn- thanks so much when a problem comes arise I know who to ask , I think i am still figuring out if I want to stay here and get my associates at community college and masters at uf or if I am going to go straight to univeristy , I am aching to get ou of this town but I also know how much I could save staying here. so yeah its a pro con sort of situation and I have like 2 years to decide. That hand thing too is amazing!

I have so many things I want to major in not to mention right now I really want t travel and I am considering planning on joining the peace corps for a while. All I want to do is make a diffrence in pepoles lives, I want to help pepole , so I really wanna travel too see and expereicne other cultures so i wanna go into the peace corps and i know some colleges give your college credit for spending time in the peace corps. I would like to spend some time in Ghana instructing about aids and teaching english and I want to spend some time in the carribieen too.Like in Fiji and Samona I dont want to go to the middle east that I wont do , I am not even considering there, btu I would love to do some work in africa and fiji live with the pepole the way they live and help them have easier lives .Its tough but I know the diffrence I would make. I know its all vollenteer work , if I could find a way that I could save money( in america like stocks or something) for a few years while i am in the peace corps I could come back and finish college with money saved while I made a diffrence in pepoles lives. So I am still figiuring out what I want to do.

You know last year I wrote an essay for a contest about what i could do to change the world? And I worte about hunger in africa and how I wanted to help it , I had a teacher proof read it and you know what she told me ? She said that it was all fine and dandy but she didnt think they would beleive that a teenager really cares that much to give up nice chlothng and electronics to go live in a villiage with no runnign power or water without getting paid. I took my paper from her and said you know what? I dont think they would belevive that a teacher would try to discourage a student from trying to solve the problem of aids and hunger and I left proofread it the best of my ability and won 100 dollar savings bond for 2nd prize in the contest.
So this is something I am commited too. I dont know does anyone know anyone who has sereved in the peace corps? I belevie in solving the world problems with ideas and communication and coming together not guns and bombs.

Vogue-Keep on getting good grades, work on getting high scores on your SAT and ACT, and you will be able to go however far you want to. You have a strong will, and committment. Good for you! BTW, Becky was accepted to UF, but we had already given all the deposits and everything for USF. She really likes it there, but I think she would have preferred to go to UF. The only problem with them is that they don't have many grants available. You will need to find scholorships on your own, which I'm sure you won't have a problem doing!

Gayle-I agree with the meal thing. Just be there for them if they need anything. That's about the best thing you can do, in my opinion.

shelly- Yeah , well I am hoping to get accepted to this journalism camp at uf this summer , I know I will get in , I am going to stay at the college for 10 days in a dorm and stuff so i will see how I like the campus. I was considering fsu cause its a bit cheaper than uf but they dont have strong journalism program I dont think , see if your daughter knows anything about journalism at fsu if ya dont mind.

Gayle - I agree with everyone here. Just try to be there for support and do the little things that come naturally to you.
Maybe they will be receptive and maybe they won't. It is hard for anyone to understand the pain they must be going through.
Welcome Katy! You will find this a wonderful group of gals.
I have been on program for a week and have lost 3 pounds. I am very positive and just taking one day at a time.
Dee - hope you are feeling better.

Vogue-I'll ask her. She was also accepted at FSU when she applied. It is supposed to be a very good college too.

Yay, Janice on the loss!!

CONGRATS ON THE WEIGHT LOSS JANICE!

Have you girls heard of Ellie Krieger? She had a show the other night on the food network. I think it was called 10 days to a new you. She had three people following her eating/exercise plan. She believes in small steps and changes win out over doing something one can't stick with for a lifetime. Her thoughts on preparing a plate: 1/2 of the plate filled with veggies, 1/4 with protein, 1/4 with starch such as rice/pasta. I tried looking on the food network site to see if I could find her list of suggestions, but it only has a few recipes etc from the show. She suggested whole wheat products, brown rice, etc. It really was an interesting show. I think it airs again this week. Try to watch it if you can.

Gayle ~ Sounds like good common sense stuff! I'll have to check the TV Guide and see if I can find out when it airs again.

I fell off the wagon again...it seems like I do great and stay OP for a few days and then all of a sudden I'm shoving everything I can get my hands on into my mouth. I don't know what is the matter with me!

Good afternoon, Floozies!

Gayle~that sounds a lot like a book I just got, Bob Greene's new diet book (I don't remember the name of it, but there is a link to it on the 3FC's homepage). It has a lot of small things for you to change one at a time to make the diet a lifestyle change rather than a diet. I bought it hoping to find some magical help that will spur me to lose these last 10 pounds. Although it is straight forward and good advice, I've already done most of it!!!

Suzy~I can't seem to stay on, either. I've been really, really good at getting my exercise in and I've been eating really, really good meals, but I just can't get my weight to budge (or at least, if it budges and I move my ticker, then it goes back up). I've been logging and keeping my calories low and I gave up red wine (only 2 glasses so far this month, and only 1 bottle in the house~but it's not a good brand so it isn't tempting me!). I've decided to really cut fat~even the good fat~to see if that helps....its so frustrating!

vogue~FSU reminded me of something I read a while ago.....the students at Fordham University have a chant they do at games....makes it sound like they are swearing, but it's just their school's initials (FU)! LOL My DH has a friend who joined the peace corps. He and his sister are still at it~20 years later!

Thank you for all the advice dealing with the death of my neighbor. We ended up taking food over and they were receptive to talking and wanting some help. We made it to the viewing, but I wasn't able to make it to the funeral. I will try to check in with her every few weeks just so she knows someone cares. Such a sad situation...

Suzy & Allison, you girls have did great so far! Try to stay OP and you will be reaching goal in no time at all!

I'm staying OP & "Gazelling" daily.

ShelleyM 01-10-2007 05:35 AM

Vogue-I talked to Becky. She thinks UF's journalism program is much better than FSU. She suggested you go online to their websites. They have tons of information on the college sites.

Gayle-Go for you on gazelling! I haven't heard of that show, but I don't watch food network as much as HGTV.

I've been okay on my eating this week. I am having hot flashes quite often right now and hope they taper off soon. Patty's 17th birthday is Saturday. I have already given her gift to her, so I don't think we are going to do anything special. She wants to go out with friends. We may do something Sunday.
