Pete's Scans Were Clear

Hi Girls-
I haven't had time to read or post but I had to let you know that my DH's scans were CLEAR! He had a PET scan yesterday (very latest in scanning technology). The oncologist called today and said all clear!

And more good news...it seems we are going to be able to switch doctors b/c I don't want to go through the bs with our current doctor.

Now I can breathe! I'll check in this weekend.

Thanks for all your prayers and support.

Hey everybody!

Made it through another day on plan! We went to Outback tonight, and I had a sweet potato with my dinner. I did eat a piece of bread, and a crouton, but I am not too worried about that. At least it was not red velvet cake!

My daughter is at Relay For Life tonight, and won't be home until some time tomorrow morning. Tom and I are home alone! :s:

I am beginning to feel really sore from doing an upper body workout this morning. I realized I was feeling rather weak, and I don't want to feel weak! I figure if I even just do a little bit, regularly, I won't lose strength, even if I don't gain.

It was foggy and gray this morning, but the skies cleared and it ended up being a rather nice day. I toured the roses this morning, and was thrilled to see a lot of new blooms.

The only bad thing about today was when my niece called me to tell me she had decided to take a job at Ball State. She was scheduled to have an interview at University of Georgia, but cancelled it. I was so sad! I was hoping she would get a job here and be close enough for us to be able to spend some time with her. She had already purchased plane tickets, so she is going to come visit us instead of interviewing. Its a bit of consolation but not much! :(

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

BOB: Feel better!

JACK: I am SO sorry your RA is bothering you! My Lupus has been kind of flaring. Could it be the weather? Hope it clears up for you!

OVER: Hooray! So glad to hear you got a good report!

COUNTRY: I found a box of those cheddar triscuits! Oh, wow...they are GOOD! I agree...its hard to keep my hand out of the box!

FILLISE: Did it clear up in Alabama this afternoon? Can't wait to meet you!

ROSALIE: I know what you mean about finding stuff that isn't right when reading. I hate when an author tries to write in a dialect and screws it up! The book I am reading is supposed to be set in the Regency period in England, but I have read enough other Regency period fiction to know she has a lot of stuff very wrong. And the characters do not act in accordance with what the culture was then. I am not an expert, but I can tell she doesn't know what she is talking about! Drives me nuts! Of course, I try and tell myself I probably could not do better, but honestly, one of these days, I am going to write a book- and it is going to be GOOD! :)

DEB: I am sorry you are so tired. Lay off that soy stuff and see if it makes a difference.... yes, I know. I am a very one track mind! Can't wait to meet Yellow Rose!

Night all!

Overcome- what great news and a big relief!

Fillese- what you said about remembering when I was in the 200's and didn't think I would ever get into the 190's really put things into perspective. Funny how quickly we forget.

I had a cheat today and too many starchy carbs, but it could have been alot worse. I made a pact that I wasn't going to go out to eat this weekend so I'm not going to have any temptations around me this weekend- hopefully I will have a better WIW(I've been exercising too). Okay, my eyes are getting blurry so I'm going to bed now.

sheanne 05-17-2003 12:37 AM

Evening everyone,

I have been doing pretty well on my eating. Haven't weighed though and I don't think I want to right now. I have an appointment with my nutritionist next week so I'll find out then. I have been so tired this week. All this homework for an old person like me is hard. And exercise.. let me just tell you ....where do you think my classes are? on the third floor. and where is the student lounge, library and book store? on the first floor. And I have to walk (it seems like) a mile to my car in the parking lot. So, I'm getting lots of exercise lugging all my stuff up and down three flights of stairs. Today, I didn't have class and I was going to just veg out. Well, I went to Meijer's and then to get groceries. Tomorrow I have to get mow the lawn, do laundry, homework.....I think the list is growing :(

Sounds like everyone is doing good. I skimmed the posts so that I would be able to know a little bit about what has been happening.

You all have a great weekend.

Sheanne

Late Nite!

Hi Ladies,
I have been doing great. I have been OP so far. I have also been getting in my water, about 84ozs. a day. I have really got to get going on the exercise. I have had problems with time management. I do believe I need a to-do list to keep me on track. And I do have the book and tapes of 7 Things Highly Effective People Do. I have lots to do now and can't seem to get them done. I will keep plugging away until I am proficient in getting done what I need to, in a timely fashion.

Debbie~~I was really glad to know the truth. Do you know off hand, the name brand of fructose that is made with fruit only. I researched a little bit today, however, I didn't get anywhere. I hope you've gotten your car back at a decent time and that it didn't cost an arm and leg..

Jack-K~~ Thanks for your support and encouragement. I had to good of a time with Mother's Day din-din. I'm up and running with this WOE. I am afraid to mess up too badly. My doctor gave me a good scare when he said, "if you don't change your way of eating you could soon become diabetic. I have to say I miss condiments like steak sauce and barbeque sauce. Other than that it is getting better and better everyday.

Heartmom~~ Have you read anything on vitamin C in lotion products. I heard a prominent doctor say that it lightens, brightens, and tightens. And another beauty expert said to cut cost, get a good lotion and add your own vitamins to it. I have found vitamin C crystals and it also comes in capsules. Just take them apart and put them in your lotions and creams.

Fillise~~ Just wanted to say hello to ya!

Country Mom~~ Glad you had a nice vacation and especially with your mom. Extra blessings that you made it back safely.

Rosalie~~ Thanks for your thoughts. I've got to figure out what I will use in my coffee. It has to taste perfect, if there is such a thing.

Monet~~ Everthing is going to be alright. Can you tell me where you got the Matzos balls from. I've seen them in stores, but didn't know if they were legal. Also can you give me the name brand. Thanks in advance.

Teensybean~~ You look simply wonderful. One day, I too, will get there. I am always encouraged when I see pictures like yours. Keep up the good work.

OrangeBabe~~ I know first hand what pain feels like. I truly hope you are feeling better soon.

To all of the newbies I say welcome to this place. I had been gone for a while, but I have to say, this is a great place to come for all of your troubles. Someone will have the solution. Again, WELCOME!

Have a wonderful day tomorrow. See ya later.

Love,
LJunel (slim and healthy)

Late night-- Just a quick post..... Thank you all for the nice compliments. The first pic is horrible, and I am ashamed of letting myself get so out of shape! Never again though!! Tomorrow is the rodeo, so will let you all know how he does. Hope the weather isn't too bad. It was so cold today, and windy again. Hope that all of you have a great weekend!

Fillise 05-17-2003 10:37 AM

Morning all!

One minute it is sunny here and the next it is cloudy--one thing's for sure--it is steamy ALL the time!

Yesterday I was at the church or running church errands from 11:00 am to 10:30 pm. Yes, you read that right, 11.5 hours. My eating was horrible. I had only one "meal" and it was bad and then I snacked on awful stuff the rest of the day. I hate days like that. Tomorrow will be another one--and probably another 10 hour day at the church. This is the most time-consuming "part-time" job I've ever had!

Oh well, I think I got everything for tomorrow done, so I can at least have today as a day just for me (and Belle). I'm relaxing--I may go to amovie--or I may stay home and be a slug all day! :^:

Teensy--I think what matters is the progress you've made now!

Agape--Sounds like you are doing great!

Sheanne--Sounds like you get exercise just getting through your day!!!! Good luck with the classes.

Heart--Happy to help! You are doing great!

Monet--It finally cleared up and I was able to enjoy the sunshine through the car windows :^: I'm looking forward to meeting you too! Perhaps we can do our own version of the Detox Dungeon!!!

Overcome---YES! :D I'm thrilled to hear that Pete's scans are clear!!!!! I know it is a big releaf for you too. Now find a Dr. you can trust so you won't have to go through that again. I'm so happy for you!

BOB--And I'm miserable for you:( Hang in there till Monday and hope you can get the shot. Glad your therapist seemed to understand you! About that skateboard--you just want me to be in as much pain as you are, don't you? I'd be in traction for sure!

Jackie--Surely you get to relax some this weekend now that the wedding is over. Take a deep breath.

Marie--I didn't realize that you were born and raised in the UK. I'm reading your posts with a British accent in my head now!

Pancho--Sorry I can't help you with your question. I don't know of any, but maybe someone else will. I would think an oil and vinegar dressing would be your best bet.

Deb--How were the yard sales today? I hope your DD is through his procedure and out of the hospital by now.

Off to see what movies are playing this weekend--Hmmm maybe "Down with Love" if that's on.

Have a great OP weekend everyone!

Susan

New and Confused

Hi! I'm brand new to this SB thing and am so glad I found this forum ... first, it's great to see it working for people. But it's also fantastic to know that there's a place to ask questions!

I read the book last week and have *no* idea what I'm doing. Help!

O.K. Potatoes, white rice, white flour, corn, and sugar (in all it's forms ... maltodextrin, dextrose, etc.) are out entirely. Gotcha.

What about corn oil? Modified food starch (that's in everything, and I don't know what it is ...)? Ish.

And as I read through the boards, I noticed lots of people mentioning ranch dressing ... I just made my own because all of the brands at the store, including the dry packets, mentioned sugar or one of the "dexes" or "oses" ... maybe I'm missing something?

And on the carbs/day thing ... I don't remember that from the book, but I read it fast ... am I correct in understanding that you get 2-3 carbs per day? Does that apply to *all* carbs? Because beans are carbs, and if I can't eat more beans than that, I'm in real trouble ... I don't eat meat or eggs, and most of the fake meats contain sugar and/or wheat, so if I don't eat some serious beans, I'm not gonna get nearly enough protein ... and what about barley? I was hoping to replace rice with barley, but if I am severely limited in that, too ... oy!

I'm willing to experiment with this some, but I'm afraid that either I won't be able to find enough non-fatty food to eat or that I'll actually end up gaining weight ...

Sorry, I'm going on forever but any help would be appreciated (btw, I already read Rissa's website ... great, but I still have questions ...)

Thanks, Wendy

WOOZILY: Welcome to the forum. Beans are considered both a carb and a protein. If you are a vegetarian, then count them as a protein, and watch the portions. Do you eat cheese, and eggs? They are good sources of protein, especially if you get low fat cheese, and stick with organic eggs, which are lower in fat, and have more Omega 3 then regular eggs, as well as less Omega 6. To boost your protein, you can try something like Designer Whey Protein. We use that around our house a lot, and it is very tasty and makes great smoothies with fruit and milk. SB is pretty easy to follow, so don't worry that it seems to easy... :) The 2-3 carbs is servings. Say two pieces of bread, or two servings of rice. Rice is ok, by the way, if you eat brown rice. Check the GI of barley. I rarely have it and don't know where it is on the GI list. I avoid corn in any form, so I use olive and peanut oils exclusively. As for the modified food starch, check the labels and see what the sugar per serving is. If it is less than 3, it is probably ok to eat, even with sugar, or starch added. Its almost impossible to avoid those kinds of additives totally. Hope this helps. I am sure there are others who can fill in anything I have left out...

Newbie help

I have read the book, purged my pantry, eaten fruits, vegitable and lean meats all week and feel great. I went to the grocery store and lost my mind. I simply wanted whole grain bread and couldn't find any. Any suggestions? Or am I reading the labels wrong ~ please help.....

catchinup 05-18-2003 08:15 AM

While on the subject of bread....

I'm having a heck of a time finding bread that is not made with high fructose corn syrup. I have been eating Pepridge Farm 100% SGWW bread and discovered this non legal ing. Any suggestions on brands of bread and where to find it. I know Trader Joe's is a great place to shop but unfortunately the closest one is 1 hour away. Thanks and I love reading everyone's posts. Patty

Good Morning All

Hope everyone's having a pleasant weekend. It's a nice sunny morning here although I haven't been out to check the temperature yet. Yesterday was sunny and cool but a great improvement over all the rain we have had this week. Didn't get to do any lawn bowling yesterday as they still have to get the grass cut. Hopefully will start before next weekend.

Agape - Have you tried agave syrup in your coffee? This is what I've been using as I don't like to use any of the artificial sweeteners and it doesn't leave any after taste.

Fillise - Hope you had a good relaxing day yesterday. Let me know what you think of Down With Love if you get to see it. I'm planning on going to see it next week with a friend.

Woozily - Welcome to the board. Beans and lentils are fine to eat on this programme. Most of them are low to moderate on the glycemic index. Barley is good to eat too. It's gi is much lower than rice. It's between 22-29. Are you familiar with Chana Dal? This is a legume that is extremely low gi - only about 8 - and would be a good one to include in your diet. The recommended 2-3 carbs refers to starchy carbs like rice, pasta, ww bread. Some people count beans and legumes as a starchy carb others as a protein but if you are not eating meat or eggs you would count them as a protein. I personally do not count them as a starchy carb even though I eat meat and eggs. Try to select the ones that are lowest on the glycemic index for best results on this woe. Here's a website you might like to check out. It has a description of the Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load as well as a list of foods and their gi.

http://members.lycos.co.uk/ramendosa/gilists.htm

Ketesteric - Welcome to the board. Sorry I can't help you with the bread problem as I am not in the US so will let someone else answer your question.

Have to get going. My dd and kids are coming for lunch so have to get out to the bakers for some bread and cold cuts, get a pot of soup made and get some laundry out of the drier.

Bye for now.

Marie.

woozily 05-18-2003 10:15 AM

Thank you, Monet and Rosalie ... this plan may not work for me. I detest eggs (get sick even from the smell of them), get migraines from more than a tiny amount of cheese, and have other digestive problems if I eat too much milk. So if I'm going to have any substantial food at all, it has to be beans and grains ... and if I can only eat 2 pieces of bread a day then no rice, etc., I'm in real trouble. There's only so much you can do with "just beans", and if I have to watch the portions of those ...

I'll give it a go for a short time without the carb restriction -- honestly, it's that or starve -- and if I start to gain weight I'll have to simply go back to Weight Watchers. Blech.

Anyone got insight on salad dressing? Again, people here seem to be using the ranch, but it has sugar ...?

Rosalie 05-18-2003 11:39 AM

Woozily - I have read of people who are vegetarian following this diet although I don't know any personally. Maybe some others on this board will have some answers for you. There are not many of us around on the weekend but you will likely get some more responses on the new weekly board which starts on Monday. You are allowed to eat brown rice and ww pasta and I think you would need to eat more than the recommended 2-3 starchy carbs while following a vegetarian diet as my understanding is that you need to eat rice/whole grains in combination with beans/legumes to get a 'complete protein'. You can also eats lots of vegetable and salads.

Marie.
