A little victory

  • I am 5 11' and started my diet Jan 6th 2005 at 260 pounds. I can proudly say that last week I am no longer considerd "obiese" Ive gone down to "overweight" for me this is a big deal. I've never liked the word "obiese" it's just gross. I cant wait to reach my goal of 175 so I can be "normal" Who knows maybe I can get get below that?? Im soo excited, I just had to share!!!
  • Hey that's wonderful! I know what you mean. It's the mini-goals an milestones that keep me going! Congratulations for all your hard work.
  • Congratulation! I'm only a few lbs off from being "normal" and I never thought I would consider that a good thing but it's sure awesome so see results, keep up the good work.
  • Congratulations! I started at obese, and now am normal and I KNOW how much those changes meant to me. Keep working hard and you'll soon be normal, but take the time to enjoy how far you've already come.
  • Yay! Good for you! I too think the word "obese" is terrible, and the people who use it don't care about the feelings of the people who are fat IMO. Unfortunately I still fit into that category.... am not sure at what point I change to overweight but LOL I know it is not yet... but it is coming!!
  • Congrats! That's so awesome!
  • congrats!!! i don't remember if i was in the obese range or not?? i think i was. but i'll have to go back and check. I actually keep a BMI record in my journal at home. every time i drop a pound i record my new bmi. I just enjoy looking through my journal and seeing that number go down too. I have to keep going until I get to 155 to be in the normal range. But I can do it....and so can you!!!

    Keep up the great work!!!

note: yep, i was in the obese range. i had a bmi of 31.6 and now a bmi of 28.2. i have lowered my bmi by 3.4 points
  • That's great!!! You CAN do it!!!
  • Wow, you are making amazing progress!
  • That's awesome!

I work in a medical office and another term that I have come across that I absolutely HATE is "grossly obese". I think that's just horrible! I'm glad I've never gotten to that category, but can you imagine if a doctor told you that?

That would make me want to go out and have a Big Mac supersized!
  • Good point, Sheila... and that is exactly a lot of what makes people who are really overweight avoid doctors. People need to be encouraged to get in shape; not mocked because they are fat. But overweight people are one of the few groups it is still acceptable to discriminate against in America!

Yep. I used to work for a doctor that was quite overweight and he would tell every patient that they needed to lose weight. One day a lady looked him straight in the eye and said I'll start when you do. I had to bite my cheeks to keep from laughing!
  • LOL Sheila, good for her! My doctor is not only in great shape; she is gorgeous! But she would never put me down either... just tries to encourage me to get in shape and cheers on my efforts!!! I am blessed!!!
  • It's a sad fact that some doctors are chock-full of book-smarts but not people-smarts. Rather than just saying "You need to lose some weight" (well, duh), or demanding "I'm putting you on a diet!!!" (um, excuse me???), I think one question that doctors could ask is "How can I help you lose some weight?".

That would put me at ease, let me know she's on my side and that we're partners in this project.

Our family recently relocated and I just had my first appointment with a new doctor. We had a long chat about my plan and we're on the same page. I like her (very people-smart, she is!) and I think it'll be a long relationship (unless I have to move again!).

And I think the phrase "morbidly obese" should just be eliminated. It's just too emotionally loaded to be worthwhile to anyone. Talk about an ego-crusher and motivation-killer!

BUT, to get this thread back on track...

Hooray for JT!!! I'm so happy for you! You've done so well and you have a whole new category to show for it! Woohoo!!!
