  • I've also heard that your sweat can smell differently if you are eating lots of onions and garlic but I always do that so I hope I don't smell

I just wanted to say welcome! Are you anywhere near Dallas? We have several North Texas beachers on the forum. I'm envious of your garden. My tomatoes have been doing well but I just can't get my squash to grow.
  • Welcome Herbmama3! Your Garden sounds delightful! And I love your quote!
  • Welcome to the beach, Herbmama
  • I do eat TONS of veggies. Tons. At first I thought it was from eating so much asparagus (yk, the sulfur smell), but after stopping it, it didn't go away. The smell was the worst during phase 1. Got better on phase 2. Things don't smell the same to me anymore, either. I guess my whole body chemistry has changed. Even my long-time fav. incense smells weird to me. And micro popcorn that I fix for the kids. Ack!

    thanks for all the welcomes!

Yes, I do live near the metroplex. I actually live in rural wise county--an hour away from the mplex...We use to live in Arlington, and boy, oh boy am I glad we don't now! Got out of the ratrace to live in the country.
  • Quote: I do eat TONS of veggies. Tons.
Good for you!! Phew! Some people (no one here ) think that South Beach is low-carb, and it SO is not!
    Keep it up!!
  • It is low-carb (meaning the only carbs being from veggies) during the first phase, but no one should stay on that for more than 2 wks, so it's not very long. I know several ppl who've gone on this diet and didn't lose like I did right away. However, after talking to them, I found that they did not cut out all sugar, etc.., for those first 2 wks. Some kept drinking 'just a few beers a week', and stuff like that. Then they couldn't understand why they didn't lose their taste for sweets, and they still had carb cravings. I think the thing that impressed me most about this diet was how quickly those cravings went away for me--but I followed the book to a T. I have to say, however, that after the first 2 wks, I did stop using Splenda because I feel it's very, very evil. I use a much more whole-foodsy version of the SBD, because it goes along with what I feel is best for my family. Sooo, since we dont' use Splenda, that's why we rarely have dessert. When we do, I use raw sugar or local honey. One of our very fav. treats/desserts is a bowl of frozen blueberries. YUM!

I do allow micro popcorn for the kiddos when we watch a movie. I think it stinks, though, lol!
  • there for a couple of weeks when I said I wasn't eating the garden veggies, I was still eating lots of veggies, lol. We had a HUGE July 3-4 party (roasted a whole pig, luau style), so we ate more meat than anything, and ppl brought lots of veggies sides, but not MY veggies, lol.
  • Please don't refer to this as a "low-carb" diet.

Dr. Agatston: "The South Beach Diet is not low-carb. Nor is it low-fat. One major difference between SB and Atkins is that we emphasize the good fats that help our general health and aid long-term weight loss by fighting insulin resistance. We also do not count grams of carbs but look at glycemic index. You can actually have a high-carb diet and still have long-term weight loss if the carbs are low on the glycemic index. For most Americans, however, adding the good fats increases variety and satisfaction."

As for Phase I, again quoting Dr.A:
Dr. Agatston: "You may stay on Phase I longer than 2 weeks if you are enjoying it. Our concern is when Phase I is used alone without a transition to Phases II and III, which is crucial for long-term weight control."
  • >Please don't refer to this as a "low-carb" diet.

I'm terribly sorry and won't make that mistake again here...
  • Hi Herb Mama!!!!!!!!!!! Welcome to our corner of the world!!!!!!

I thought the smell comment was interesting. I smelled less when on SB. I think the overload of sugar causes me to smell badly!!! When on plan everything works well for me. It also stablizes my moods!!!
