Welcome to The Beach, Jen.
First of all, the book is great but the food list has been updated. I'm not sure if the new book has those changes. Be sure to check out the revised Phase I food list in the Frequently Asked Questions Sub-Forum!
Yes, amounts shown are per day.

Bamiegurl 05-03-2005 03:29 PM

Hey Jen welcome to our beach!

beachgal 05-03-2005 04:29 PM

Hi, Jen, welcome!

Feel free to post a new thread introducing yourself and asking your questions. You'll get the most response that way. And do join us in the daily thread! :D

ilovemyluckycat 05-03-2005 08:58 PM

Hi!

I started SB P1 on Sunday. I've never done the SB, but I am an experienced dieter! :D I don't find the eating too hard...I guess I feel a little overloaded on eggs...so P2 will be nice when I can make a protein smoothie..with fruit.

I miss fruit and yogurt the most, but it isn't too bad.

How many people are on this because they want to avoid diabetes and heart illness? I have three generations of adult (fat) diabetes behind me, so that was a big part in why I choose SB.

One more question: on P1 can I have sugar free jello pudding?

And a tip..when the jello is almost set use a mixer and whip in 1/2 cup of plain no fat yogurt. Let the jello set again until firm. It gives it a wonderful tangy zip!

I'm happy to be back at 3fatchicks!

Sandi

Bamiegurl 05-03-2005 11:01 PM

Sandi...No pudding on P-1. Sorry! Welcome to the forum! You can have yogurt in P-1 now. If you have not seen the most recent food list you might want to check it out in the F & Q section. Lot's of goodies have been added to P-1 and 2.

beachgal 05-04-2005 12:33 PM

Sandi, welcome! Nope, no pudding on Phase 1 (good call, Bamie!), but you can have it on Phase 2. I make a protein smoothie with yogurt, protein powder, ice, and SF syrups (right now I'm hooked on raspberry). Not as good as with fruit, but still yummy. :T

Have you guys seen Swimgirl's challenge? Ellis stickied it. Pretty cool support for Phase 1! :D

Today I did my usual for breakfast:

B: 1/2 cup 1% cottage cheese with 1 cup grape tomatoes, 8 oz skim milk
S: 1 cup FF yogurt with cinnamon and SF Vanilla syrup
L: Leftover Chicken Divan, Refried beans or 3 bean salad, creamsicle
S: Pepper with hummus
D: Some kind of soup...I've forgotten what it is! ;)
Dessert: PB cup and cocoa

Did 20 mins on the elliptical this morning and have an hour long balance ball class tonight. I'm still feeling flu-ish, but having less craving thoughts. It's such a relief to get to this point and feel the control food has over me slipping away. :cloud9:

chilichick 05-04-2005 05:22 PM

I do need to get in more veggies. I have been doing salad greens and celery. I will try some peppers with hummus as my snack. The veggie omlette sounds good. I think I will try it tomorrow.

B: Lactaid cottage cheese , coffee
S: 10 almonds
L: small low fat low sodium lentil soup, Hard boiled egg
D: lean steak with asparagus and string beans, Sugar free Jello
S Laughing cow light swiss (1wedge) with 2 stalks celery

ilovemyluckycat 05-04-2005 07:17 PM

Thanks for the info BamieGirl and Laurie!

So is it okay in P1 to have a sugar free fudgesicle or sugar free no fat fruit yogurt? Even if it is I am going to wait until P2 because it will be something to look forward to! I'm not at all hungry on this diet, but I am really tired and a little fuzzy and I have a constant light head ache (yes I am having some caffeine). Still beats feeling bloated and doughy. :ink:

kimberlydrn 05-04-2005 11:18 PM

I'm doing O.K. so far, I think. I've been drinking my water, eating my vegetables, and exercising 1-1 1/2 hours each day. The only thing is I've had a hard time eating only 2 tbsp. of peanut butter. Actually, after my workout I had 2 tbsp, then another 2 tbsp for an afternoon snack. Since I probably burn between 300 and 550 calories per day with my workouts, do you think it will hurt me? I weighed in at 160 on Sunday and miraculously the scale said 153 this morning. I know most of its water, but I'm still excited! It sounds like everyone else is doing great!!!

Bamiegurl 05-05-2005 07:38 AM

Sandi..Check out the updated food list. I think the yogurt in p-1 is just plain. I'm not a yogurt eater so I can't say for sure. He says you can have up to 2 c. of caff. a day as long as it does not cause you to stall. Hope the headache passes soon. Are you eating enough?

thelastdietjen 05-05-2005 09:28 AM

cool thank you so much thats what i thought i was just unsure

thelastdietjen 05-05-2005 09:38 AM

I would just like to say to all ladies thank you so much for everything you guys look like you are doing so well you all should give a big yell for how much you all have lost and i cant wait to get were you all are at thaks for the info ill talk again later feel free to email me and what about peanut butter that just freaks me out that you can have that !!

beachgal 05-05-2005 12:50 PM

Sandi, those feelings should go away by day 5 of your first week. If they haven't, see your doctor, okay? Make sure you are getting lots of water and eating good carbs (beans, peppers, tomatoes) to ensure that the feelings go away. You can have no sugar added fudgesicles and no sugar added creamsicles, but make sure you count them as part of your 75 cals of sweet treats. You can have plain yogurt and use SF syrup to sweeten it, but no fruit-flavored yogurt until Phase 2. When you get there, make sure the fruit flavored is sugar free, okay? :) You can also add SF jam to plain yogurt. Eating three servings of milk or yogurt each day reduces your belly fat! Make sure you are eating natural peanut butter, the kind with only peanuts and salt as ingredients, okay? :D I love it too!

Kimberly, check out the calories and fat with that peanut butter. It will hurt you a lot!!! You definitely need to keep to one serving. If you find that you can't, get it out of the house, okay? Make your snacks more about veggies and protein, not just protein...it'll fill you up more and make you much happier! Try peppers and hummus for some good, Phase 1-safe carbs.

I know I'm probably boring you with my menus, but it definitely helps me to post them! :) Thanks!

B: leftover chicken divan and 8 oz of milk
s: 1 cup FF plain yogurt with vanilla SF syrup and cinnamon
L: salad from local salad bar with cabbage, broccoli, radishes, cauliflower, chickpeas, spring mix, spinach, tomatoes, cubed turkey, and 2 Tbsp spicy ranch dressing, homemade 3 bean salad (maybe)
s: pepper with hummus
D: Chicken salad (with mayo and celery), 3 bean salad, green beans or other veggie/spinach salad
S: celery with laughing cow
Dessert: PB cup and cocoa

Have a great OP day!

attackpanda 05-05-2005 12:50 PM

New to the group and the Beach

Hello everyone,
my husband and I started phase 1 on Monday the 2nd, and I joined the group last night.

It's really wonderful to have a group of people to share my "suffering" with!

I have PCOS, and the doctor recommended this diet for me, so hopefully it will work. I've lost 9 pounds on my own in the last 6 months, but that's been all in since 1997. Here's hoping.

We are also trying to achieve my second pregnancy, and we go to the fertility doc on the 16th. :hyper:

Here's hoping!

kimberlydrn 05-05-2005 06:11 PM

Laurie-thanks for the advice. I might have to get it out of the house. I love it! Also, thanks for posting your menus. We newbies need ideas. Where do I look for hummus in the grocery store? I've looked at some of the recipes and I don't even have any of the spices they call for, so I'm going to have to gradually build up my spice collection. I've read somewhere that most larger stores have hummus already prepared. Do you eat it with bell peppers? And is there a certain brand I need to get for the vanilla sugar free syrup?

Ruthxxx 05-05-2005 06:20 PM

Kimberly, I found hummus in the deli section today along with cheeses and things like spinach dip and red pepper dip. It's very easy to make from chick peas. I must see if there is a recipe.

chilichick 05-05-2005 09:12 PM

Today was a stressful day and I did have a diet coke with ...*wispers* rum.

But that happens. Tomorrow is another day. My food intake was good though

Breakfast was scrambled egg with lowfat boiled ham

Lunch was 3 slices low fat turkey bolongna

Dinner was chicken and black beans in salsa

Barb0522 05-05-2005 09:24 PM

Kimberly - I buy Athenos brand Hummus. I've seen it at Kroger and Tom Thumb and other grocery stores (I think Albertson's). I like the spicy three pepper one. The Greek is also great. They use healthy oils in the hummus.

chilichick 05-06-2005 06:32 AM

On todays menu:

B Scrambled egg
S:15 almonds
Lunch 3 slices of tukey and salad
S: wedge of laughing cow cheese and celery
D: hamburger, no bun with a green salad Sugar free Jello

I need to add more veggies ...suggestions???

Ruthxxx 05-06-2005 07:14 AM

Check out Beachgal's post in the FAQ for the most nutritious veggies to add. I vote for red peppers myself!

Reg4242 05-06-2005 07:18 AM

Veggie tales:

I have been having the V-8 juice for breakfast, & spinach omletes.
I also have been eating red, yellow and orange peppers raw, they are a bit expensive about $1 a piece. Green beans are also good, I cooked some fresh ones and used them for snacks, with my proteins. Some of the beachers like hummus, I am not one of them. Chick peas are also good in salads.
Hope these help.

kimberlydrn 05-06-2005 11:45 AM

Thanks for the hummus advice. I'll have to try some. I plan on going to Kroger's on Tuesday of next week. I stayed on program yesterday and went to a spin class this morning. I'm trying to stay off the scale until tomorrow since TOM paid me a visit yesterday. Thanks again!

beachgal 05-06-2005 12:44 PM

Chili, I hate to say it, but with the rum digression, you really should start over. :( It'll work so much better if you do the full two weeks with no cheats. You are SO right. More veggies!!! :D The celery is a great start!

Check out these recipes...once made, they are easy to grab and run:

Broccoli, Bacon and Cheese Salad: http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=42460

4 Bean Salad: http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=45528

Broccoli and Cannelini Bean Salad: http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=42395

You can also get green beans, frozen, and heat them up, then add some smart balance and some toasted almonds :T

What about making coleslaw? There's a great recipe for "overnight coleslaw" in the SBD Cookbook.

Add veggies to your scrambled egg. Roll your lunchmeat around peppers, celery, cucumber, etc.

Put cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, etc. on your salad, and make it with spinach or spring mix instead of leaf or iceberg lettuce.

Kimberly, you can find premade hummus in the deli section or in the cheese section, like Ruth said. There are two major brands I've found regularly across the US: Athenos and Three Sheiks. I prefer the roasted red pepper hummus, but other flavors are good too. Just check the ingredients...only healthy oils and no sugar, okay? I love it with peppers, but it's good on other veggies too. I get the SF vanilla syrup by ordering it at my local coffee shop. It's the cheapest way I've found. You can also sometimes find it at places like Ross or TJ Maxx. I found a ton at TJ Maxx just two weeks ago..$6 a bottle! DaVinci and Torani both make great syrups made with Splenda. I use the in my coffee, but also in yogurt, in smoothies, in deserts, and in my cocoa. :T

ilovemyluckycat 05-06-2005 09:55 PM

Laurie, You have been a fountain of knowledge and a great moderator. Thanks for the advice. You mentioned that I would feel better after day 5 and I do. I think the tree pollen was bothering me some. I wasn't thinking about how green peppers are a good carb. I ate a whole one tonight with...HUMMUS! I love hummus and I buy the Cedar's Brand. Cedar's has less fat and calories than Three Sheiks and Athenos, but I bet it is harder to find nationwide.

You chicks are great...I'm having fun! Happy Mother's Day and Happy Weekend to All!! :flow2:

Sandi

chilichick 05-07-2005 07:44 AM

I plan on entending a few days to make up for the cheat.
I have found that I love Laughing cow cheese. If I have it late in the day with some lactaid pills I have no effects ( Lactose intolerant). It gets me through the mid afternoon munchies. I find that one wedge can fill two big celery stalks so the crunch factor is there. I am going to try wrapping my turley around a pepper slice. for lunch. My students think it is funny when I am eating the sliced meat without bread, But I actually like it more. I dont miss the bread at all. Sometimes I wrap in a big romaine leaf. Another thing that has goeens me through snack cravings is sliced cucumber with chees on it. I guess you get creative as you go along. I am going to try one of the "mock" breakfast this weekend to see if I like them.
I also plan on making one of the breakfast cups to take to work. I read that kraft low fat shredded cheese has no lactose so I am going to try it first before I take to work. I may omit the cheese and see if I like it too.

chilichick 05-07-2005 02:07 PM

I forgot about that pesky little phase one headache :(

ilovemyluckycat 05-08-2005 09:46 PM

Chilichick, have you had headaches on Phase 1 before? I'm still not sure if mine is do to allergies.

Well ladies I was at "Temptation Island" this weekend (my mom's). There was candy just sitting on the table and my mom drinking beer! BUT..I made it through! I have been very OP!!! I also have lost 7 pounds since day one!

Thanks everyone, this week will be easier!

Sandi

beachgal 05-09-2005 09:58 AM

Sandi, great work! :bravo: That hummus sounds fantastic...I haven't seen it before. I'll have to keep an eye out! :mag:

Chili, three to five days past that cheat and the headache will be gone. No cheats=no headaches. It's a good thing. :D I know you'll make it through!!! Sounds like you are doing lots of healthy eating! :D

chilichick 05-09-2005 12:54 PM

Into the second week!
B: garden Vegetable egg beaters
S: 10 almonds
L Diet Pepsi and 3 slices of LF ham around red pepper slices
S: 2 stalks celery stuffed with one wedge Laughing cow cheese
D: Taco bake with ground turkey ( lettuce, tomoto shredded on top), SF Jello

I must remember water today. I have not had any so far * goes to get water*

chilichick 05-09-2005 01:03 PM

Ilovemyluckycat that is so great. I have not weighed myself because it is that TOTM. I am hoping to be pleasantly surprised. If I get 7 pound off for the two weeks I would jump for joy. Good for you!

I had my one small cheat and just hoped back on the wagon and I am taking it one day at a time, one meal at a time.

bpw 05-09-2005 05:40 PM

Hey Everyone!

It's been a full week for those of us who started/re-started Phase One on May 2! Shouldn't we all post how we are doing??? I would have started a new thread but I have a heck of a time navigating around this website. I am slowly learning new things, but it will take a while!

I lost 10 pounds (but I know thats mostly water in the beginning!)

I was 100% OP! And all the cravings are gone - the only problem is that I tried the recipe for peanut butter cookies and I LOVE them - having a hard time limited the number I eat so I don't think I will make them too often. But its a WONDERFUL recipe to have when I NEED something extra yummy.

Not that I want anyone else to suffer - it's nice to know I am not the only one who has to deal with that killer headache! 24 full hours of it! What a relief when it finally passes - I should try to remember that awful feeling so I never need to go back to Phase One again!

I am so glad I have this site to learn to much and get such encouragement. Thanks to all who write and share.

beckatz 05-09-2005 07:28 PM

I have been low carbing for a year but I have been stuck for about four months now. I have been going back and forth with the same 5 pounds so I have decided to go with South Beach Phase I starting Monday, May 16th. I am believing that that will get the scale moving again. :moo:

kimberlydrn 05-10-2005 12:13 AM

I've lost 8 pounds so far!

I started on Sunday May 1st, and so far I've lost 8 pounds!!! I'm so excited! I've stayed totally on program except I went a little over with peanut butter a few times. It's out of my house now though.

Sandy-Congrat on the 7 pound loss!!!! :cp:

Chilichick-How was the taco bake? It sounds like you're doing great! :bravo:

Beth-10 pounds! WOW! :cb: :woo:

Beckatz-Good luck with Phase 1! :goodluck:

Laurie, Ruth, and Barb-Thanks for the great advice! Glad you are all here. :thanks:

Gina, attackpanda, the lastdietjen, and Bamigirl-Hope you're all staying on program. Let us know how you're doing. ;)

chilichick 05-10-2005 05:49 AM

The taco bake was good. I used ground turkey and fat free refried beans that were spicy. I did not have any salsa, but I did not miss it. It is one of the very few things I cook that my son will eat. He usually eats it with taco chips, but he made a salad with it and I had no complaints.

kimberlydrn 05-10-2005 11:45 AM

Just a quick post to say that I hit the 150 mark today!!!! That's 10 pounds for me too. I'm so excited! I'm doing the happy dance. :cb:  :dancer:

beachgal 05-10-2005 12:46 PM

Congrats on all the good work, chicks! :bravo:

Beth, let's keep it in this thread. We'll close it when your two weeks are up and then you can post to the whole community...we'll share Phase 2 together! :D

Beckatz, we'll start a Phase 1 thread for your week, okay? :D

jenne1017 05-10-2005 03:53 PM

:) And me :)

Congrats Kim!

beachgal 05-10-2005 04:10 PM

Welcome back, Jenn! Hope things are going well! :D

jenne1017 05-10-2005 04:23 PM

I hope they GO well, Laurie :)
