  • Quote: I'm reading "Fast Food Nation" right now because someone recommended it when I said I enjoyed the documentary " Super Size Me" It is a very revealing book - I'm not going to eat anything that has red food dye ever again.
Ooh, do you mean carmine dye? Ewwww! I found some antacids the other day that were dyed with carmine. Yuck! That book sounds fascinating! A friend of mine is reading Food and Mood...it sounds equally intriguing.

Quote: My therapist says I need to get some daily meditation books so I have a list and I'm going to the book store tomorrow. I bought a book on HOW TO DO MEDITATION - apparently I wasn't following directions. Better meditate on that one for awhile.
I love SARK's books in general, but she has a great description of how to meditate in Wild, Succulent Woman. Fun read!

Ooh, Cottage, thanks for the tip on Robin Pilcher! I love Rosamunde and have read all her books, yet dream of reading more. I'll have to look him up!

Grraccoon (interesting name!), I haven't read James Patterson (but I added the books to my list of ones to read!), but loved Mitch Albom's 5 people. Do you think the movie could possibly be as good? I'm a little leary of the battle scenes.

Oh, Barb, I loved the books Nora wrote as JD Robb. So fun! I used to be a huge Sci Fi/Fantasy buff, but I have no idea what the Forgotten Realms books are. Fill me in?

Oh yes, Kiko, Barbara Kingsolver! I think her most famous was Poisonwood Bible, which enjoyed. My most favorite of hers is Prodigal Summer...I listened to it on CD, and I totally recommend that. The reader's lilting southern voice adds a lot, and they added in nature sounds in between chapters. Really sets the mood. I was appalled to hear of a coyote hunt in NY...that book really taught me why it's horrible to kill the predators. What were the chick lit books you mentioned like? Any worth recommending?

Beach Bum, I haven't heard of any of the books you metioned or the authors! You eclectic reader, you! Tell me more...anything worth recommending? I can't wait to be retired and read, read, read all day!

Ooh, Anchor, that sounds great...I have a henna tatoo kit somewhere. I bet the henna paste is all dried up! Have you ever painted with water on the sidewalk? You just need buckets of water and paintbrushes. On hot days, the sun gets rid of your painting pretty quickly, so you can "paint" all day! The "up dating" book sounds funny...I doubt there is anyone out of your league, girl!
  • Laurie

I don't read that much as I should being retired .Have to many things to do that I didn't have a change when I wasn't retired. Right now there's nothing good on T.V. so I have the books to read. The books that I mentioned are OLD OLD Books that I picked up at a book fair. Hugs BB
  • I LOVED the Irish trilogy by Nora Roberts. I couldn't get into the Key trilogy, though. I did like the Three Sisters Island trilogy. It's hit or miss w/ me w/ NR. I liked the first short story in THE MACGREGOR GROOMS and the last short story in THE MACGREGOR BRIDES.

What's your favorite HARRY POTTER BOOK? I think mine has to be either THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN or THE GOBLET OF FIRE.

For those that read romances, one of my favorite authors is RACHEL GIBSON. She has a new one out, THE TROUBLE WITH VALENTINE'S DAY, but my favorite of hers has to be SEE JANE SCORE. She's funny.

I like Jude Deveraux, too, but not so much of her latest stuff.

I'm a fan of sci-fi/fantasy too - my favorite there is DAVID EDDINGS.
  • I love to read romance books, too. Nora Roberts, Mary Higgins Clark are two of my favs. However, I really have to restrict myself with books because I can't put a book down until it is finished.

Presently, I am trying to get through a cost accounting book for a course that I am taking. I can honestly say, it isn't a real page turner.

One other book that I am reading is The Millionair Mind by T. Harv Eker. It has only been out since the end of Feb. It is a quick read and has some really good advice in it. The hard part is putting the advice into practice.

Well, must run. Have to take DM to the hospital for a check up.
  • I love to read too!!
What am I not reading? LOL Btw, I love NR... too but it's hit and miss with me too! I am huge Debbie Macomber Fan tho! Her books are so down to earth. (especially love the Cedar cove series (about a small New England town))

The 5ppl u meet in heaven movie was AWESOME!!! totally surprised us!

I am reading How to stop worrying and start living, How to win friends and influence ppl by the Late Great Dale Carnegie.

Also, reading romance novel about a 40 something widow and some 20 something guy.. pretty good actually. I am also reading Joint Custody with a Jerk and the new Joel Olsteen book about living up to your potential. It's pretty eye opening!

I read several books at a time.
  • fast food nation was a great book except that i read it just before i started backpacking around the country and was replused by the idea of fast food, which incidentally means cheap and therefore had a moral dilemna whil backpacking.lol

i just finished an amazing book called "a sunday at the pool in kigali" it was a brilliant expose between the dichotomy between rwandans around the 1994 genocide and the 'white' aid workers. brilliant and touching.

not sure what i'm going to read next.... probably stuff about the ipperwash inquiry until i get caught up on that work, then i'll have to decide my next move.
  • Hunny - I used to be pen pals w/ Debbie Macomber! I like the Angels books she wrote. It's been hit or miss w/ me on her newer stuff. Liked the stuff she used to write for Silhouette books.

Nefarious - Did you see HOTEL RWANDA? That was an amazing movie. How that movie doesn't win best adapted screenplay over Sideways (which, IMO, wasn't that great of a movie), I don't know...
  • Laurie - You are so funny! Yes - if you have never read Fast Food Nation it is truely an eye opener. I try to take everything I read with a grain of salt and see both sides of the story but I'm telling you - I consider myself to be a pretty well read person, I was a Marketing Director for 16 years and designed advertising for 10 of those years. I totally understand the passive agressive force of advertising but they discussed concepts in this book that blew my mind. This book has forced me to face a reality that I kind of sort of knew existed but this puts it all in one place and if you choose to read the book - in your face. The man at the book store said that if I liked FF Nation that I should read another book but I have to get the title from him again.

nefarious_wytch - I'm facing "kind of" the same dilemma - we are leaving for Florida and we drive - which normally means lots of Fast Food. I'm making trail mix and packing a lunchbox.
  • Quote: I did like the Three Sisters Island trilogy.

I'm a fan of sci-fi/fantasy too - my favorite there is DAVID EDDINGS.
Oooh, I loved the Three Sisters Island trilogy...I'd forgotten about that one until now! I would love to work in that coffee shop/cafe/book store they had!

I loved the third book. Since then, they've been dark and getting darker, but I still love them. I'm interested in what the next one will be like. I loved the relationship with Harry and Sirius in Prisoner.

David Eddings sounds verrrry familiar. What did he write?

Peggy, about the cost accounting book. Bet it's good for curing insomnia! Hope things are going well with your dear mom. I'm the same way about books, Peggy...so I actually restrict myself to reading them in the bathroom. (I can't believe I'm saying this on a public board!) When I'm not in school, I do take lots of time to read, but with all the reading I need to do for school, I can't give myself permission to sit on the couch and read for pleasure. But reading in the bathroom just seems like ultimate multitasking.

Hunny, I don't think I've ever checked out Debbie Macomber. I'll have to look for those! What types of books does she write? How do you manage several books at once? I can do books for school (nonfiction) and a fiction book, and can just barely manage a book on tape in the car and a book in hand at home, but even then I get mixed up. How do you manage?

Nefarious, it sounds like you have a really amazing life! Did you see Hotel Rwanda? (wrote this, then saw Chinky asked the same question! ) I know next to nothing about the genocide.

Anchor, you've intrigued me! Now I have to read FF Nation! I was a marketing assistant for a bit and I was shocked at how much advertising can do. I am a total sucker for ads and find myself wanting to run out and buy random things that I have no need for, like hemorrhoid treatments! My DH always says, "I wonder who they think is watching this show?" (usually after we've seen three ads for feminie products while watching a show together... ) Aren't those moral delimmas a *itch? My MIL packed a lunch for us when we were driving cross country one time. We got drinks at a fast food place and then ate our food there. It was really nice! Sometimes I stop at a grocery store and get a rotisserie chicken, some fresh bread, and deli salads along with sodas. It's not too expensive and very tasty. Maybe you can do that?

The next book on my list is The Shipping News. I haven't seen the movie, but my mom thought I would like it, so I thought I'd try the book first. Has anyone else read it?

I really love reading books by Sarah Waters...she hasn't come out with a new one in quite a while, though. My favorite by her is Tipping the Velvet, but I liked Fingersmith too.

Does anyone read mysteries? Dorothy Cannell writes wonderful books...so funny, and the heroine loves to cook and eat, so I can relate. I also love the Nicholas Bracewell mysteries...they take place in Renaissance London. Oh and also the series by Bruce Alexander about the head of the Bow Street Runners...the first one is Blind Justice, I think. I came to love Agatha Christie late in life, after enjoying several Poirot specials on A&E. I love Poirot!
  • Laurie: David Eddings wrote The Belgariad Series which included Pawn of Prophecy, Enchanter's End Game, etc. etc. The main characters were Belgarath, Belgarion, Polgara, Durnik, Silk, etc.

How do you "quote" other posts like you did? I couldn't figure it out...
  • Right now I am in the middle of reading Rosamunde Pilcher's Winter Solstice. I love to read Robin Cook, Jame Patterson, Patricia Cornwell, John Sanderson (the Prey series), Catherine Coulter, Sandra Browne. Oh yeah Mary Higgins Clark. I know there are others whose books I enjoy too but those stand out. Right now I am also working my way through Dr. Phil's Self Matters book. Reading is something that I really enjoy and my goal is to spend more time reading (which I consider very relaxing) and less time working.
  • I started to read Fast Food Nation, but have yet to finish it. It's a lot of reading. Saw Super Size Me on DVD and I don't think I've had McDonald's french fries since. You have to watch the deleted scenes on the DVD. The bit w/ the french fries was probably the most convincing of them all.
  • Hey Beach gal.. I strategic place my books... all over the house, purse, car. It takes few moments to remember where I left off. (thank god for bookmarks and those super picture packages from Walmart--I use the xtra pics as bookmarkers.. who can use all 100 of those pictures ... but I digress) I have to read the Dale carnegie ones for a class so Of course, I read those everywhere in line, at stop lights waiting for anything...

Debbie Macomber is like light romance without all the nitty gritty details if you know what I mean. More like family situations and such. Quick reads.. You can go to her website and read excerpts. www.debbiemacomber.com
  • Laurie, I LOVE The Shipping News! I've read it several times. And although I don't normally like movies made from books, I really did like this one. (I love Judy Dench, and really like Kevin Spacey)
Speaking of movies made from books, another good one was To Kill a Mockingbird. One of my favourite books, and a very good movie.

Hunnybee, I know what you mean about having books all over. In my car, I've got, Killing the Budda (highly recommended), a couple of Iris Murdochs and some Noam Chomsky on-the-go on my coffee table, and a huge stack of "cozy mysteries" by my bedside.
Right now I'm working my way through a bunch I've already read... "The Cat Who..." series, by Lilian Jackson Braun.

Chinky, gotta run to lunch... I read the Belgariad! I didn't get all the way through the second series...Malorian or something?

To quote someone, either click on the "Quote" button at the bottom right in their post, or type [QUOTE=NameofUserHere*] at the beginning and [/QUOTE*] at the end, without the *s (had to put those in so you could see the code).

    Hoep that helps!
