Canned veggies

  • First, I must say, I love Costco. I try so many things there that I normally wouldn't try which is usually a good experience rather than a bad one. Today was an exception. They had 4 cans of asparagus spears in a package so I decided that I'd try it. Now let me say, I've never had canned veggies before so I wasn't sure what to expect. I opened up the can and out came... mush. Mushy ugly asparagus.

Oh well I'll stick to frozen and fresh veggies from now on.
  • Canned asparagus makes great asparagus soup so don't throw them out.
  • Hi nelie,

I don't like asparagus, so, I can't help with that. But if you have Shaw's or StarMarket supermarket's out where you are they have good "no salt added" canned veggies. I'm not big on canned either, but they aren't bad, especially for store brand.

I prefer the frozen veggies myself, otherwise I never use them all before they go bad I tend to buy enough for 10 people when only 4 live here

  • Blech...reminds me of canned spinach. Vile stuff. I love fresh or frozen though.
  • My thing against canned is they taste horrible and they are so high in sodium.
  • Canned asparagus is really different from fresh asparagus. A traditional kiwi dish is asparagus rolls. White bread (crusts removed) and butter with a canned asparagus spear placed diagonally across the bread then rolled up. They are the most disgusting things I have ever tasted but were a really popular dish when I was growing up. Really slimey stuff!

Canned asparagus is okay in a frittata which is like an omelette. You spray a pan with non-stick spray, put in some canned asparagus spears, beat some eggs with a little water, salt and pepper and pour over the asparagus, top with grated l/f cheese if you wish, and cook on low until almost set then put under the broiler until the top is golden brown.
  • I like canned grean beans. Other than that, i would stick with fresh or frozen.

  • I prefer canned veges to frozen, but like fresh the best.
  • I can handle canned green beans, corn, peas, and that nasty mixed vegetable they make. Only because that's what I grew up with. We never had fresh unless it came from the garden and back in those days, even if it was fresh at one time, you still cooked it until it was mostly mush or it wasn't done.

Green beans went into a pot with some onion and a ham bone and it cooked for an hour at least.

I hate canned spinach and I haven't tried asparagus. Now that I know, I probably won't.

I prefer frozen vegetables, my dh is just the opposite. He'd rather have fresh then canned, then frozen veggies. He doesn't like the taste or texture of frozen vegetables.
