Thursday Thoughts

I'm thinking about the beach right now, a real beach! How I'd love to be walking in the warm sand right now, watching the sunrise. :) I've got the mid-winter blues, can you tell?

Today is my Friday, my long weekend starts at 4pm today! I'll be helping Cindy get some last minute errands done and packing up her car. The girls are very excited for their big ski trip and seeing their Vermont cousins. I don't have any plans yet for my weekend except to enjoy the time off. :) It's supposed to start warming up and reach 55* by Sunday, so I'll enjoy the teaser of Spring while it lasts.

Ruthxxx 02-05-2009 07:12 AM

Cottage, I'll pick you up in a few hours and we'll head South. My friends in Sanibel will welcome us. You can cuddle a dog or two on the way down to keep warm.

It's deep freeze here again this morning and I have to take out the trash which I did not do last Thursday. I also need to load up the woodbox with firewood as I burned the last stick last night! Sometimes I really wish I had a man around - but the thought fizzles out quickly!

Donna comes today, I have a bank run, quilts to deliver for Victoria's Quilts and still have a bit of Christmas crud to stash away. (I've been procrastinating until the storage area is re-organized but have decided that can wait.)

See y'all later.

cottagebythesea 02-05-2009 07:17 AM

Ruth, I'll be packed and waiting for you! :D

Natalie'sMom 02-05-2009 07:17 AM

Good morning ladies!

It is cold here too and I am soooo ready for spring!

I have a busy day and have been up since way too early! So, it is time to jump in the shower and get this day started! I am already done with my coffee! have a great Thursday everyone!

elusivekoolaid 02-05-2009 07:40 AM

morning ladies! :coffee: (afternoon here...)

cottage: I too share your beachin dreams! I have been earthcamin it during my lunch time to see if the sun actually does shine somewhere!

ruth: count me along on your road trip?

natliesmom: good luck with all you have to do today!

As for moi: at work, busy counter, have boiled eggs and l/f mayo for lunch. I brought my pistachios in for late afternoon snack as I have a late doctor's appt which means dinner will be late. ho hum. FIL seems to be better today, but we're all still worried and the doc warns he's not out of the woods yet.

Ah well...Friday tomorrow! :woohoo:

phxsunflower 02-05-2009 07:49 AM

Good morning ladies,

I am up and moving early this morning. Walk is done, lunches are packed and the kids are just waking up!!

Ruth and Cottage, sending you warm wishes for the day. We had our touch of spring the last 2 days(low to mid 80's!!) and we are in for a cool down. So I guess breaking out the shorts will have to wait another week.

Natalies mom-

Everything is going good here kids and work are keeping me moving and tired.

Well now I have used up all my extra minutes and the kids are standing behind me to get onto the computer and the shower is calling my name so...

Everyone have a great day and a safe one!!

Schmoodle 02-05-2009 07:50 AM

Ruth, cottage, don't forget me!!!!! I promise I'll be quiet, nobody will even know I'm there. We should have a gorgeous weekend around here cottage.
Jenny, glad FIL is hanging in there, hope he is out of the woods soon. Have a great day Nat's mom.

Now I am getting excited because we have a lapse between our contract expiration and renewal so it is illegal for me to work on any of my projects, probably for all of next week. I've got some training and busy work that I can stretch out over a couple of days, but then I think I'll take a few days off. I've been making a list of stuff I'd like to get done, and it's already a mile long, but I included some fun stuff too. I'm going to try to set up a couple of lunches with friends, and some clothes shopping, maybe see a movie in the afternoon just because I can. If that contract gets awarded really fast then I am going to be totally depressed! It's government though, so it shouldn't happen that way. My company is not happy to have us all on overhead for a week it but I sure am, and I am a team player, using my leave so they don't have to pay me.

Have a good Thursday chicks.

ETA: Hi phx! When it gets to 80 around here, I am going to go lay down in my backyard for a while.

Chelby29 02-05-2009 08:01 AM

My friends, I have bad news. It's cold at the beach, too. I'm about 5 hours from the Gulf of Mexico. It's 17 here. It's probably in the 20s there. It's been on the news that Florida has been in the freezing temps every night, and they are scared for their crops. But, I am ready for beach weather, too. My son asks me every day when we are going to our friend's condo in Panama City Beach.

Well, I'm off to get coffee and a shower. See you later!

CyndiM 02-05-2009 08:07 AM

Good morning Chicks :coffee2:

Cottage - The weekend does look glorious for Feb. Do you have plans to get outside and enjoy the sun?

Ruth - Sanibel is on top of my list for next winter birding trip. Take pictures :)

Natalie'sMom - Have a good day

Elusive - Sounds like you are doing some really good planning ahead for the day.

Phx - amazing how fast those "extra" minutes slip away, isn't it!

Schmoodle - :crossed: hope the government works at its usual pace :) What a treat to have an unplanned week off.

Speaking of unplanned time off - I'm taking a personal day today. My friend is getting house crazy already so I promised to take her out "running the roads". (Elusive - is that a Scottish expression or just my friends?). We are going thrifting, not sure where yet but I have two google maps with lists of stores. We always have fun so I know I'll enjoy the day. I feel a little guilty, like I really should put a full week in at the office but this time of year I really start to drag so can't resist a day away. I also have about 50 personal days accumulated so might as well use 1!

Have a good day Chicks. I'm off in search of bargains!

ETA - Chelby! I guess we will have to go further south - how about the Dominican Republic?

Karen3 02-05-2009 08:49 AM

Girls....It is 29 degrees down here. dream away but Florida is cold right now and no one owns long johns.....Karen3

Pacergal29 02-05-2009 08:51 AM

Cottage much like you we are freezing today, well zero to be exact and looking at 50's this weekend, hot dog!

Ruth spent many a summer in Sanible with my grandparents growing up, ah memories!

Schmoodle I too hope they take their own sweet time renewing that contract.

Cyndi have a great time today!

Everyone else Hello and have a wonderful day!

Me Well I have heard many of you chicks talking about the FlyLady, so I decided to check it out and jump on board! I don't have clutter so much as just don't ever seem to find the time to do those corners, lights etc..... Maybe this new motivation will help in the weight loss area too!

Hope you all have a great day!

Barb0522 02-05-2009 08:53 AM

Well, it is bright and "sunshiny" here in Dallas as the radio was talking about this morning. Looks like the next couple of days will all be highs in the upper 60's and low 70's so not bad for this time of year. I hate the cold and can't wait for it to be warm enough to swim.

Zeff - Don is a very good friend right now. Once my divorce is final we'll see if there is more there than that. I hope so.

Tonight is our Roundtable staff planning meeting at the local pizza restaurant. They have the best grilled veggie pizza. I wish they had a whole wheat crust so it would truly be legal but at least it is a thin crust. In addition to work, I need to complete the missing information in the divorce decree and email that to Robert, type up the minutes of the Troop Committee meeting and work on the Twilight Camp budget. I also have laundry to put in the dryer now and need to get to WalMart and the bank after work. I'll get done what I can and not worry about the rest. Right now I have 10 guys to train at work so I should get started on that.

beachgal 02-05-2009 09:18 AM

Oh, Cottage, I'm with you! I've been using the image of waves lapping on the shore for my morning meditations. It was 6* this morning when I left. Oy!!! I'm so ready for spring...but I love the stillness of winter. And I need some time to get into my seed catalogs! ;) I can definitely look forward to 55!!! :beach: I'm so glad you're getting a break--hope DH lets you relax and enjoy!!!

 about a man, Ruth. You do twice as much as any man would! Hope you get a lazy afternoon near the fire after all your labor! I'd join you on the Sanibel trip. Just swing this way and I'll bring along some doggage to share. Angel makes a great snuggler.

Love your new avatar, Jenny! Hope FIL feels much better very soon!

Sounds like a well-deserved rest, Schmoo!

Chelby, just like that "5 o'clock somewhere" song, there has to be a warm beach somewhere, right? Let's go to the Bahamas... :sunny:

Cyndi! :nono: Use those personal days free of guilt, girl! You can't take 'em with you when you go! ;)

Stephanie, do you think Flylady would work if you have clutter up to your nose and no where to put it? :o I'm a mess here and ready to call clean sweep!

Me:
Started the day by spilling my tea (which was boiling) on my shoes while filling my gym bag. Not my favorite way to start the day. Trying to figure out how to delicately take off my shoes and apply aloe vera to my burnt feet (is anyone thinking of the Office episode with the Foreman grill? If only I had some bubble wrap...) without bothering my male coworker!

Quiet night tonight. Off to the gym after work, then making dinner (it sounds amazing...chicken soft tacos (WW, of course) with fruit salsa (mango and kiwi) and avocado cream, along with some frozen veggies. Then it's off to a couples core group meeting. Definitely looking forward to tomorrow. I'm going to help stimulate the economy by buying cards and gifts for DH's birthday. ;)

Natalie'sMom 02-05-2009 09:19 AM

Quick question: sweet potatoes for phase 1 or phase 2? I checked the food lists and I didn't see it for either?? I am so sleep deprived though, I could've missed it.

My friend gave me a great looking peanut butter soup recipe and this was the only questionable ingredient.

Thanks!

hmacneil6 02-05-2009 09:22 AM

Good morning all!!! Happy Thursday!
Cottage - I'd say come out my way but the rain is supposed to hit this afternoon. I won't share how beautiful it's been lately.

Ruth - Try to stay warm today as you're out and about. And get those Christmas decorations put away. It's almost Valentine's Day!!!

Nat's Mom - Hope your early morning doesn't slow you down this evening.

Jenny - Glad to hear that they figured out what was going on with your FIL. Hope things continue to get better.

Phxsunflower - I bet you're going to get the rain that's headed our way today. Have a good one.

Schmoodle - Good for your volunteering to take a few days off. I hope you're able to get everything done you want to next week.

Chelby - 20 degrees at the beach....I can't begin to imagine!

Cyndi - You are too good of a friend. I hope you find some wonderful treasures while thrifting!!!

Karen - Mornin'

Stephanie - Flylady is good. Good luck with getting your routines in order.

Barb - Have a good meeting. Just a thought, have you ever asked if you could bring in your own dough for one pizza. Since you have a regular meeting there, they might actually accommodate you? It might be worth a shot?

Laurie - That's a sucky way to start the day. I hope your feet aren't too badly burned!!

me - Dinner last night was SO YUMMY!!!! I was really pleased with my pork loin steaks w/ mushroom sauce. I think I might actually post the recipe. Today as school should be fairly quiet. I'm working on a Legislative Open House that the school will host next month. We want our state legislators to know what a "non-public" school is so they have better understanding when a bill comes up that includes that terminology. I'm hoping to get a decent response. Should be a quiet night at home. Not much more to report.

Have a great day, ladies....try to stay warm! BLESSINGS!!!

hmacneil6 02-05-2009 09:23 AM

Nat's mom - Sweet potatoes are a phase II item.

ellie6388 02-05-2009 10:05 AM

No Personals except for HI EVERYBODY!!

Sick Mommy, Sick Kids, Sucky Week.

I really want to put everyone in bed and sleep til Monday and start a new week.

I swear I am not usually a downer but man this is the week from ****!!

BBL!

Kim_Star060404 02-05-2009 10:09 AM

Hey, everyone! I'm here! I woke up late, got to work late and am posting late. It's nice to see that everyone's doing fairly well this morning, if not a bit cold. Ya'll could come see me! It's a sunny 45* outside and should get into the 60's this afternoon. It's really quite pleasant. (Although, no beach to speak of!)

elusivekoolaid 02-05-2009 10:25 AM

hiya cyndi! I know run up/down the road is for saying someone will give you a ride home or to some other destination (you wan' a run doon the road, hen?) but not sure about running the roads. Whereabouts in Scotland is your pal from?

Thanks for the kind words, chicks. And thanx Laurie, my wee pic is from our vacation in Myrtle Beach last year. ~sigh~(more beach talk!)

Owah...I need to get back to work...see you chix later!

:dust:

Chelby29 02-05-2009 10:40 AM

Jenny, have you read the 'Outlander' series by Diana Gabaldon? They are set in Scotland. STEAMY!!! Hubby likes when I read those books. ;)

pam920 02-05-2009 10:47 AM

Good morning ladies.

I am packed and ready for the road trip to Sanibel.

I made the chicken avocado swiss melt yesterday and highly recommend it. I also finally found Jicama in the grocery store and did a stir fry and it was delicious too.

Chelby, I bought a rutabaga and have no idea what to do with it. Any suggestions.

It's cold here too but waming into the low 60s for almost a week. I am so ready for Spring.

Hope everyone has a great day.

Chelby29 02-05-2009 10:51 AM

Rutabaga -- Pealing it is the hard part. But, peal it, cut it into large cubes, boil it with salt. When it's tender, drain it and add cracked black pepper. Yum! After being 'sugar free', it tastes like candy to me! mmmmm

Pacergal29 02-05-2009 12:17 PM

Chelby I have read all but the last one in that series and loved it, but boy are those winter reads! Long, long, long!

sophie 02-05-2009 12:52 PM

wow, lots of personals today. Its nice to get all the weather reports, some of them I am so jealous off.

Its sunny but very cold here today.

Yesterday I went to the casino and big loser here, well not really if you count $40. So it pays to be a pack rat sometimes. My sweet grandson (17 months old) loves the jungle book, DD tells me that he walks around carrying the DVD. I went into the storage area of the basement and found two boxes full of books. One of them is a Disney Book printed in 1974 (first edition) of the Jungle Story taken from the movie. The other is of Pedro the penguin who says - Its Silly to be Chilly" anyone remember that one? So its off to the post office for me.
Have a good day chickies this winter will pass but remember every day is a gift.
Sophie

Jenskihere 02-05-2009 01:04 PM

Hi there!! I have been running around all morning, trying to squeeze in errands while DD and DS were at school. Day 2 of house cleaning. The house is a mess... how is that happening? I have more free time than ever! :D I got hooked on this coupon site. This Coupon-Queen of IL has some great ideas! Today I got Suave shampoo for .38/bottle! I got juice for .87 a bottle (big bottles), and frozen rising crust pizza for 2.99 with a free 2L of pop!! I put them in the deep freezer. The pizza will be a treat for a weekend night when we would have normally ordered out! Can't beat $3 for dinner! :D My neighbor and I signed up for her class on coupon cutting. It is a free class at the library. This lady somehow buys groceries for a family of 5 for less than $65 a week. I'll take some of those tips!
No working out for me today. I woke up very sore and very tired. I have been hitting the gym harder than ever and my appetite shows it! I am so hungry all the time now.
Happy Thursday!

zeffryn 02-05-2009 02:15 PM

mmk, how the heck is it warmer here than in Florida?! It's in the 50's...supposed to be in the 70's tomorrow.

Barb, I hope it becomes more than that as well. Both you and Brian deserve it.

Jen, a family of 5 for $65 a week? Nice. Tough in these times, though. Also, take some time to rest. Over training those muscles is going to lead to an injury. Anything beyond slight soreness is your body telling you to take it easy. Give yourself a day or two.

elusivekoolaid 02-05-2009 03:02 PM

chelby-no, I haven't read them but have read romance novels with a kilt theme. Scottish people seem highly amused by kilt rippers, which is a term I've seen used for a display in our local Borders!!! I'll post up my wedding photo in my profile so you can see my kilted hero!!! It's funny though. Now that I live in Scotland (and have been here over 7 years! :yikes:) some of the romance in the scottish novels seems a bit hokey...especially when they write the accents out phonetically. I dunno, I've picked up the lilt and sound more Irish than American now...it's REALLY hard not to do pick it up. (BTW, why isn't there a kilt smiley?!)

Anyhow, I'm rambling! :o

Beef fajitas for dinner were meh...I didn't want to upset my stomach so late in the day with peppers. This will be my second week on phase 1 but I'm going to do a third as I seem to have a few  cravings lurking!

zeffryn 02-05-2009 03:12 PM

So, every once in awhile one of our neighbors dogs will come and totally destroy our garbage (most days, I put a full bag outside the back door for DH to take out when he gets home). Today, I saw a dog running across the deck and just knew he was heading towards the garbage bag. I ran from the kitchen and flung open the back door and caught the dog in mid tear. Apparently, I startled the dog because he lunged at me, hit me in the chest with his front paws and knocked me over. I cracked my head really hard on the hardwood floor and broke my glasses...

what to do? I called DH but he's at the gym and his phone is probably in the car. The neighbor isn't home (they always just leave their dogs to roam during the day ).

The dog really hasn't demonstrated any behavior like this in the past but we are highly suspect that it is an abused dog. Now, I'm rather worried about him doing it to my son.

Chelby29 02-05-2009 03:45 PM

Zeff, In my neighborhood, you get a gun and shoot the dog. But, I live in the woods. Maybe you should call animal control. I'd be concerned about my son, too.

Jenny, I always cringe at movies set in Louisiana. Actors can slaughter the Cajun and New Orleans accent. Although, I do love the Adam Sandler movie Waterboy. The old Cajun coach in the overalls is EXACTLY my Uncle Tommy. :D

Kim_Star060404 02-05-2009 03:52 PM

Zeff- :yikes: I agree with Chelby. I would call Animal Control or the police. That way there's documentation of what happened today and the neighbors would have more of an incentive to keep their dog under control. Even if there are no leash laws there, I'm sure there are laws regarding him causing you injury while he's on your property. I hope you're not hurt and that this was a one-time occurrence if the neighbors don't shape up and keep their dog tied.

zeffryn 02-05-2009 04:58 PM

um...so...we just found out that our landlord isn't renewing our lease for reasons unknown. We have to find a new place to live by April 1. No idea if we're planning to buy or rent. frick. I knew this place wasn't right for us but we loved it and I wish we were leaving under our circumstances and not his.

damnit I don't need a new source of stress. I could just scream!

Chelby29 02-05-2009 06:42 PM

I had that happen one time. The landlord was getting a divorce and HE needed a place to live. I shed lots of tears, but ended up in a better place. You might feel better if you scream. Go find that dog and bite him. :)

hmacneil6 02-05-2009 07:18 PM

Zeff - I'm so sorry and I'm so sorry! I hope all things reslove themselves quickly. Hang in there!

rdw1 02-05-2009 07:40 PM

Hey chics, no time for personals at the moment.. gotta get dinner goin. I did get to my hometown today to get my hair done and do my former co-workers hair! So nice we can trade off and it only costs a little time! I also went to lunch with another former coworker and had pizza*gasp* but I only had a little over half a personal one.... but then *gasp**again!* lol a couple glasses of wine! I just couldn't resist! time to get some serious workouts in! Summer is coming fast(although it doesn't feel like it now~) I have got to get seriously motivated! anywho- then I visited with some old friends I hadn't seen in a few months so all in all it was a good day! I will definitely do better with the diet tomorrow though!

redflatshoe2 02-05-2009 08:50 PM

I haven't had breads, white rice or pasta for 4 weeks (since I started the diet). I thought I faught my cravings, but it was TOM. I was craving cookies yesterday. I had one piece, it satiated my cravings and stopped.

I haven't had cravings all day today - awesome!

Tomorrow might be a different story, I am going to Harvard square to meet some friends (Hasty pudding). We are all going to our usual college bar and Toscanini (italian gelato shop). It will be hard being the only one ordering salad and water.

Jenskihere 02-05-2009 09:50 PM

Zeff- I'm so sorry to hear about the lease!! What a horrible guy... doesn't he know you just had a baby?!?! Geeze!!
You'll find something better!! This wasn't meant to be!

Barb0522 02-05-2009 10:52 PM

zeff - I'm so sorry you are going to have to move. But hopefully you will find a better place.

I got all the alterations made to the divorce decree and emailed it to Robert. I had Brian call him to tell him he had email but so far no reply. The staff meeting was a lot of fun tonight. Don made it even though he is still having major allergy issues. Hopefully he'll feel up to doing something this weekend while Brian is camping.

After the meeting I made it to the my credit union and got more candles for Brian's science experiment. I still need to run out and pick up a new USB 4 port hub. Mine died today and I was without wireless for awhile until I realized the hub was the problem and not the wireless adapter. There is no school tomorrow so I'll be dropping Brian off at the church for a camping trip to Austin. It's a really long drive so they are leaving at 1:45.

zeffryn 02-06-2009 12:05 AM

We found a place that sounded promising on Craigslist and called the guy to take a look at it. It's a single family house (ours now is a duplex) with a huge backyard and much more space inside the house for only $80 more a month. It's also in a much more central part of the city and in a nicer part of town. There is also a two car garage (which we hardly ever see down here) and a huge attic for storage. Finding something like this in this area that is still under 30% of our income has proven almost impossible.

I really need some prayers, girls. This seems like a really great fit for us and if the application goes through (I'm worried about this because we had problems with identity theft about 8 mos. ago that still isn't fully resolved and it has impacted our credit immensely) we will be moving in in a few weeks. The landlord is a very straightforward guy and really seems to like Calvin. He said that he was looking for a young couple with kids to rent it and said that we seemed like a really great match to what he was looking for. I'm really lifting this up in prayer tonight - it would really be a blessing.
