kara.. this is my BAD ankle... i broke it in 2001 in November of 2007 I had the metal removed from it. then they discovered I have a bone cyst in it too. The bone cyst is actually ignored till it's painful.

6 weeks ago my ankle started to hurt badly. on the side with the bone cyst. I went to the ORTHO... and i had a stress fracture. probably from Yoga... NO HOPPING in YOGA....

Hey, Kara! I hear you on the sloth pace. I was feeling that that this morning, too. :snail: I love Panera!!! I started eating their wholegrain bread before I had a chance to look up the ingredients--I now know that it's not on plan, but it hasn't had any bad effect on me, so I continue to eat it. :o I love their soups, especially the black bean. I'm a big fan of the chipotle chicken sandwich, though I get it without the bacon and substitute wholegrain bread. They have awesome salads--I sometimes have to substitute balsamic vinegrette for the dressing or ask for something off (like mandarin oranges), but they tend to have fresh fruit (I love the pears in the orchard harvest salad, but it's only available in the fall), nuts (not the candied kind!), and great cheeses. You can also add all natural lean chicken breast on any salad. I'm a huge fan also of the Mediterranean Veggie sandwich. I get it on wholegrain, but all the insides are SBD-safe and SO good--cilantro hummus, feta cheese, peppadew peppers, veggies...yum! Their coffee is also good and our local one also has caffeine-free diet soda! :D The hard part is saying no to all the pastries!

Enough with the food porn, Laurie! ;)

Schmoodle- I have a trouble ankle from a bad sprain from playing volleyball years ago. It is important to listen to it when it bothers you, rest it, ice it & a support works wonders. I don't have to restrict any activities. I walk, run, play volleyball, basketball etc. I just have to make sure it is supported so I avoid turning it. See an orthopedic doc if it continues to bother you. It is helpful if you can find one who specializes in sports medicine/sports injuries. They will have great information on how to rehab it, if you need that.

Kara--At Panera, I usually get the "you pick two" with half greek salad-no dressing and black bean soup. I drizzle the soup over the salad instead of dressing. And an apple as the side item. Their mushroom soup is delicious, but I don't know the nutritionals on it and I don't know if it is vegetarian or not. I believe the black bean soup is vegetarian and the greek salad does not have meat on it, just feta, olives, & veggies. They do have nutritional info online available.

I am going to copy the Panera suggestions into my SB Dining Out Guide. I've only eaten there a couple of times, but it's good to have some options when traveling!

Laurie, what are peppadew peppers? I wonder if they'd dump the insides of a sandwich on a bed of lettuce??? And I'm  about hopping in yoga!

Tawnya, Dr. Phil's whole point was that you have to find what's meaningful to them. For example, yesterday Connor was goofing around instead of doing his work and threatening to keep him inside didn't help and threatening to take away TV didn't work (since he doesn't watch that much anyway) but once I threatened to take away his new multi-colored pen, he had his nose to the books! Who knew such a small thing would be what he cared about the most?!

Jan, I hope Boo is OK!

Karla, thanks for the suggestions! I do love black bean soup!

I poured some protein powder in my Greek yogurt for lunch today and it was really good! 37g of protein for 195 calories - not too bad! Thought I could use a little boost for the afternoon.

Kara I was wondering about protein powders. Wondering if they were ok for phase 1 as I often like to have shakes for breakfast or lunch if I don't have time to make something. We have a few different kinds of protein powders at our house....a soy one ("chocolate" flavored, low low low sugar, high protein, low calories and carbs), Muscle Milk Light - vanilla, low carbs and very low calories, low sugar, high protein....and then we also have gainer...which I won't even look at ;)

TK, FitTV is great. I do their early morning pilates sessions once in awhile. I've kind of forgotten about that channel, I might have to look into it again :) Does DishTV have an "on demand" feature? We used to have it, but that was 3 years ago and I can't remember. If they do, you might want to check it out and see if they have anything fitness related.

tkglenn 04-10-2008 01:13 PM

Kara-well, he does love cub scouts and he's no longer allowed to go until we can trust him again. But really, that's all that I can think of. We have taken so much away, even things that are dear to him and it doesn't faze him anymore to get "good" things taken away. I think after the discipline he got yesterday he learned his lesson-----hopefully.

zeffryn 04-10-2008 01:29 PM

I just put a pair of jeans on that hasn't fit in probably 6 months or more. They fit comfortably. Mind you, when I bought them, they were a little big.....but I haven't been able to get them on comfortably in quite some time. :)

This is definitely motivation. I have another pair of jeans that I absolutely love that I've been saving since before I got pregnant. I REALLY want to wear them again :)

tomandkara 04-10-2008 01:36 PM

Aw, Zeff! Yay! You're doing so well! Dish Network doesn't have Fit TV OR On-Demand where we are. :( My sisters have digital cable and they use the On-Demand all the time! Check out the ingredients on those protein powders. As long as they're all Phase 1 approved, then you'll be fine. There are so many brands and types out there that you can't make a blanket statement that all are OK. If you're confused, post the ingredients and one of the Gurus will let you know.

Tawnya, I'm sure you'll find something. It's hard because you don't WANT to take away things like Cub Scouts that you think are good for them, but sometimes you have no other options!

Tawnya - I have been there with my son. He was pulling things at a very young age that shocked me, and he is a very bright, intelligent kid. Get him alone and he was fine. Get him in a school environment, and trouble started. We tried EVERYTHING - rewards, punishments, yelling, stars, charts, EVERYTHING!!!

I knew he didn't have ADD, so I assumed there really was nothing else out there. I mean - his life is simple. No divorced parents, no deaths, no difficulty, really. The BEST thing I ever did? We all hauled off and saw a psychologist. I resisted for years and years, and finally looked into it. I found someone that was very intelligent and not a pill-pusher. (Psychologists can't prescribe, BTW) It turns out my son had ODD, and when I read the DSM IV for his diagnosis, it sounded like his life's story. Nothing BIG had happened in his life, but a lot of little things did add up.

The doctor explained WHAT he had, WHY he does things and HOW to get him to stop. The HOW was the hard part, because with any kind of behavioral mod, it has to be 100% ALL THE TIME. DH and I had to work together and always be the same response for him every single time. We'd go back to the Dr. a week later and say "he did this... we did this.. this is the outcome" and the Dr. would advise us of what we did right or wrong, and so on. Eventually, we got to the point where there were very few incidents happening.

The only difficult lie in the school. They had him for 8 hours of the day and REFUSED to participate in the behavioral modification (basically part of it was to ignore the bad behavior and redirect) because they stated they have a zero tolerance policy. If my son poked a kid in the arm, he was punished. The behavioral mod basically said that the behavior needed to be ignored and my son redirected to something else like it never happened.

That is the main reason why I began homeschooling him, was to implement behavioral mod all of the time. After 1 1/2 years, he was a whole different kid. Now he's in a new school and having a few adjustment issues, but not the garbage he used to pull. Finger crossed, that is.

My recommendation is to find the time and money and energy and get all of you into a reputable psychologist's office ASAP. If he/she is a good psychologist, you will be amazed at the insight they can give you. After meeting with my son for half hour, the Dr. started telling us things that he expected my son was doing, and it was like the Dr. had been standing in our kitchen for years! You are not alone.

zeffryn 04-10-2008 01:46 PM

Krystal, that is a really amazing story. Most parents do not have the ability to be so intuitive. Good work!
I'm glad that your son has improved :)

Kara, the back of the can has a million different ingredients that I can't pronounce. I'm going to start another thread and list them, see if someone can give me an answer on this.
