With Natural Match, it comes in all your normal shades, light, medium and dark in blonde's, browns and reds I believe. Each of those has a cool shade, a neutral shade and a warm shade. The cools take out brassiness/yellowness, the neutrals are the most natural colours, and the warms add a golden tone.
So, if your hair is ashy like mine and you want to warm it up you can get a good match with the neutral, or warm it up even more with the warm version.
It works well because you always get a colour close to your own, but it can also fix the ashy-ness or brassiness problems

It's like an improved version of your own colour. I agree about the roots too, they're less obvious because the colour is close to your own.
PHEWww...long winded aren't I?
I'll put the link in, and hope it doesn't get removed

It has a cool colour selector too...for if you're not sure what to pick!
