Trish!

I would suggest some type of modification in your diet. Like eating just vegetables and fish/chicken. Keep it light! If you work at being strict witn your diet you should see some weight loss. Sounds like you aren't at a place to really workout with a blown knee, so I would really watch what you are eating. This would be a great start.

Just jump right in! Best wishes to you!!!

I agree with Spill, your diet is a good way to start. Who knows, you may get on a plan and decide not to go through with surgery. Start looking at your diet and try to stay within a lower calorie range (<2000), but that's up to you to decide. Also try cutting the processed and "kid foods" (as I like to call them) and stick to fruits, veggies, whole grains and lean proteins. Look around on this site and perhaps you will find a plan that works really well, or you will make your own- I know there are success stories from both sides. I caution against the body cleanses thing as it's not a "diet" or weight loss method as it sounds. There are many great sections around here- if you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to ask!

Welcome to the forum!

Welcome!

My stepmother had the bypass surgery and apparently it worked well for her (I havent seen her in a while but my father told me she lost a LOT of weight) but something about the thought scares me. If it works for you, though, go for it. This, however, is a wonderful place to start and get support... something that I have found is critical to success. Everyone here is super-supportive.. and we all know you can do it!

I can't really think of anything that wasn't already said.. Just welcome and good luck!

Hello Trish, and welcome! 3FC is an awesome place for support and advice, you are going to love it here!

One of my best friends had gastric bypass surgery in December. She weighed a substantial amount more than you but has thus far lost over 135 pounds! The first thing is, no matter how hard it is for you to give up your sweets or comfort food, you're going to need to learn how because once you have the surgery there won't be a choice in the matter, you might as well start getting used to it now. Other wise I don't really see how you are going to lose that 20 pounds before your surgery if you can't exercise but aren't really willing to change the diet. There's no magic way to do it. I don't mean to sound harsh, but it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to lose weight. You just have to make a choice, what's more important? The food or losing weight? Once you have your answer you'll know what to do.

Good luck and I hope to be seeing you around!

Trish! You can do this!

You will have to modify your diet. Go through the kitchen (and house if need be) and clean out ALL the junk!! If its not there you can't eat it!! I like to eat 3 smallish meals a day with snacks in between.. that way I eat every three hours and I can tell myself that its REALLY not that long before I get to eat again. You just have to watch the size of the meals closely if you are eating 6 times a day!

You may be able to do *some* excercise. You could buy a set of light handweights and sit in a chair and do some upper body exercises. Also I know the pool can be a great place for folks with knee problems BUT please check with your doctor on that one!! I wouldn't want you to injury yourself more! Your doctor may have some helpful suggestions about weight loss as well.

I would talk to your doctor and see what kind of exercisies they recommend without hurting you knee. I agree that the pool might be good if you can get away, maybe some water aerobics classes or something low impact like that. I know how hard it is to give up the foods you love. But maybe you can still kepe some of them, just in moderation. Allow youself to "cheat" every so often, as long as your eating the right things other times i think you would be ok. try to get in lots of fruits and veggies and whole grains, stuff thats good for you.

Ok, it isn't that I am against the bypass, it just is that I think alot of people have the wrong ideas about it going into it.
(Firstly let me make a disclaimer and mention that I have not had it and the only person I did know who did died).
First off, usually one has to lose some weight on your own through diet/exercise before you even get the surgery. Secondly, after the surgery you are forcibly (due to your tiny pouch, ect) put on an EXTREME diet. Thirdly, it is MAJOR surgery and there can be some serious complications. Lastly, once you have it, you STILL need to montior your diet for the rest of your life because you can stretch the pouch out and gain again.
So, for those reasons I think that if you can lose by diet/exercise to begin with, just keep on at that if at all humanly possible.
I admit that I had thought about it and even went to a seminar, my mom was deathly afraid for me and before I could start getting my diet monitored by my doctor for insurance approval..........something clicked for me and here I am 112lbs lighter all by myself, no bypass, no ww, no jennycraig, no fitnessforlife, just sensible eating (meaning that yes, I do like chocolate and I do eat it, every day too, just not like 3 snickers bars) and occasional, moderate exercise which I really should amp up.
So, I just want to let those who are really overweight and are thinking that the bypass is their only option that you can lose masses of weight in other ways--- even on your own.
It is possible I and many others on this board are living proof.
Just something to think about.

Thank you all for the great advice!!!
I actually did pretty good today with my diet!
I also made my self strap on my knee brace and walked about a mile or so.
I got alot farther this evening than I did the night before.
I'm not gonna stop untill I can reach my 20 lb goal.
As for my bypass surgery I'm looking forward to only being able to consume such small ammounts of food,I will have no chioce, but to be satified, and Watch every little thing that I eat.( only good things ofcourse!)
For now I'm planning ahead an checking everything out before I try and consume it.
Tomorrow I'm going to have plain oatmeal for b-fast,and maybe some fruit.
Snack will be veggies.and so on.
I will let you know how it goes!
