Lou, I'm a beginner runner too. There are a few of us, and other more advanced types that also chat and advise each other in the exercise forum, so check this out.

Yes you can do other exercises on your rest-days, but it's advisable to avoid exercises that pound the joints in your legs, at least until you've built up strength in your bones and joints. Cycling is supposed to be an excellent exercise for runners because it builds up strength and endurance in similar muscles without putting too much strain on them (however, running is not supposed to be as good for cyclists, wierd I know).

Also check out the coolrunning website for lots of information and advice, don't know the URL, but you'll find it if you google it.

Happy running and good luck at the weigh-in tonight

I am not up to the running stage yet but I need to vary my walking e.g. incline/speed. At the moment I am starting at 4.5 and building to 6.0 over 30 minutes ( in both incline and speed). any advise on varying this greatly received!

I think any exercise done properly will build up your stamina and fitness generally. How about swimming? Great for the upper body - in fact a good all round exercise - I go twice a week and I'd love to do more. I also do a 20 minutes stretches routine (6 times a week), yoga (once a week), aerobics (once a week), cycling (to get to the gym and swimming pool), 20 mins abs exercises (3 times a week) lift weights (3 times a week) and I'm hoping to be able to attend at a circuit training class on Fridays - and I'm looking in to Tae Kwan Do (or however its spelled!)

I only do my walking / running outdoors - I've been walking for couple of hours every morning for months now, but I recently introduced running UP hills and interval jogging along the flat bits - the fresh air is great and I'm working up a nice tan even though I'm a good girl with the sun screen.

I tried running in the gym but I didn't enjoy it at all. Too hot - nothing much to look at - they wouldn't let my dogs in to run with me - basically I just found it a bit boring and a chore whereas walking out of doors is a total pleasure. Maybe you could alternate indoor and outdoor runs.
