Default newbie with 180lbs to lose

Hi all,

I am 44 yrs old and recently I was told after having a cardiac stress test that I had a 100% blockage of an artery in my heart. Well after doing an angiogram it showed that my ateries are clear. Praise God for that!! But a month after my good news my 42 yr old hubby suffered a major heart attack. No warning signs before just started having chest pains and went into cardiac arrest. Thank God that he didnt arrest until the paramedics were with us. After several days in ICU and one stent later he is doing better and we are committed to us both losing weight and to eat a low fat healthy heart diet. He has several partial blockages that we want to make sure dont cause him further damage.

Hubby is has lost about 25lbs in the almost three weeks since his heart attack and I have lost nearly the same at 24lbs. He has about 40-50lbs to go before he is where he should be and I have 180lbs to go. So far it hasnt been too bad since I now have a natural dislike for the sight of the fatty foods that almost killed him. I do realize that it will probably get harder in time but I am prepared to deal with it. I told hubby if this doesnt change my eating habits then there is nothing that ever will. I am ready to do whatever it takes to get us both to a healthy weight again. He seems to be dealing with the our new diet pretty well too. He doesnt complain at all.

We see the doctor later today (June 28th) to see what permanent damage he has to his heart. Hubby is doing great though, he is already walking a mile twice a day. He is my hero for what all he has went through lately and how far he has come. Our 25th wedding anniversary is this fall and we both would like to celebrate many many more together.

I would like to find a buddy who is close to my age who also has close to the same weightloss in mind. I know this is going to be a long road and only someone with a large amount of weight is going to really understand.

Thanks in advance

Shelle

hi shelle... welcome!
I have a strong history of stroke and heart disease in my family. It really hit home for me when my very petite, active 64yo vegetarian mother suffered a stroke the same age her mom did. My mother walks five miles a day and drank soy when people didn't know what soy was. I said if she had a stroke i'm surely doomed! I started to eat better and exercise here and there, it didn't stick too well until I thought to myself. I never do anything half a**, why am I taking care of myself this way? I am on my way to losing this weight for good. I can't help the genetics but I sure can help the 60 something pounds I can lose. good luck and keep postin'

Hi Shelle,

I am close to your age - 37 in July. And I am starting at a weight similar to yours and have a long way to go too.

My mother has various serious health problems, including 3! blocked arteries, not just 1. She is 62 and has diabetes, angina, and is overweight also. So, my future is assured to be similar if I don't get this weight under control. I WILL do it.

My mom unfortunately was denied any medical treatment for this situation. They told her that her veins are just too small to have a stent put in or any other treatments available. She does not exercise (she refuses to do ANY). She said she just doesn't care anymore, and that's that. I saw her this past March after not having seen her for over a year, since I moved to the west coast. She came to visit me here. I have to tell you, the sight of her just about knocked me over. She had gained a lot more weight and looked so bad, it took me about 2 days just to sleep through the night after that. I still feel so very sad about seeing her in that condition. I remember her as being so young and fresh when I was a teen.

I am here to lean on if you'd like to talk. It is a struggle for me as well, but since I have lost a lot of weight in the past, and gained it back... at least the knowledge is there that it can be done. One day at a time.

I'm glad that you and your hubby are in it together, that helps a lot I think. My husband is very supportive though he is not overweight.

Best to you and write to me anytime, I am here.

Hi Shelle, and welcome! I'm sorry you had such a traumatic experience to bring you to the place of getting serious about getting healthy and losing weight... but so thankful that your hubby is doing okay! God bless you for your commitment to doing what it takes to take good care of both of you!
