Default Anyone familiar with Chicago?

Dh and I are going to Chicago for a week in May! We've never been there and would really appreciate any info on tourist attractions or restaurants.
I've looked through some tourist books and websites but would prefer info from a real person if possible.

Thanks!
Liz

I would recommend Navy Pier. The view especially at night is beautiful.

Navy Pier is great! Any and all of the museaums or the planetarium (SP?) or the aquarium. Down town in general is fun! Brookfield or lincoln park zoo. Restaurants close to down town I am not so familiar with. Any one have suggestion???

not at all.

what do you want to know?

shopping- Michigan Ave. good shopping but i'm more of a boutique shopper. if you want to stay downtown and want a change from michigan ave. i suggest going to state street. it's downtown, but a long walk, short cab, or cheap el (train) ride from downtown. it has a better filene's basement, the "real" marshall field's, nordstrom rack, plus a bunch of other stores.

food- i really like bandera (on michigan ave.) for their amazing chicken salad. they kinda have everything so it's a good place for lunch or dinner. chicago is also supposedly known for their popcorn (garrett's on michigan ave.) so you might want to check that out. i would not eat at navy pier (over-priced), but rather walk down the street (grand) to eat at fox and orbel's for lunch. it's a gourmet grocery store that has a nice cafe attatched. i don't really have any recommendations for pizza because i've had it once and that's enough (i don't like the way i feel after i eat it). due's and uno's is same company, so good choices downtown. chicago hotdogs are also a hit (maybe at a game?) i would suggest if you like meat you can do a brazillian steakhouse (not my thing because it's pricey and filling, but the salad bar is AMAZING!). you can also do it for lunch, it's the same concept, but half price. my absolute favorite recommendation for dining is tapas. there's a restaurant downtown called iberico! it's so good and the sangria is delish (not expensive either....but get there early (6pmish), they don't take reservations and it gets CROWDED).

attractions- the aquarium is my favorite (great photo ops there), the planetarium is not worth it. the art museum, and the museum and science and industry is good too. i'm a huge baseball fan, so it might be fun to check out the cubs (not the sox). but to be fair, you will be able to get sox tickets game day, cub tickets you can check craigslist, or get them the day of the game from a scalper (in chicago EVERYONE does it right in front of cops, it's just the way it is). you can also wait till the game starts to get better prices outside the park. plus, it's a cool area of the city (some great boutique shopping in that area). also, my absolute favorite thing to do with tourists is the architectural boat tour. it's nice to be on the water, and you learn a ton! they are usually about an hour to 90 minutes, but sooo nice (it does get chilly on the lake so bring a light jacket or sweater).

transportation- don't be scared of the el! it's cheap ($1.75-$2.00 one way), it takes you everywhere (i don't have a car....don't need it), so check it out. you can get day passes and people are definitely willing to help you out. i would even suggest taking it from the airport to your hotel. if you want to go from michigan ave. to the state street shopping, you can take the el. from michigan ave. to the cubs game or sox (boo) game, you can take the el.

i hope that helps. if you have a certain type of cuisine you like (there's a greektown part of the city that's really good too) or if you like a different type of shopping you can message me.

have fun, i hope i helped out a bit!

You will love Chicago!! Here's a few suggestions that haven't been mentioned.

By Trolley . . . The Illinois-Grand Corridor Transportation Management Association (TMA) offers daily free trolley service between Navy Pier and State Street along Grand Avenue and Illinois Street. Current Trolley are Mondays hrough Thursdays 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Sundays 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. Trolleys typically run every 20 minutes. Pick-up points are indicated by "Navy Pier Trolley Stop" signs posted along the route. For more information on the TMA, please visit www.tylin.com This is a great way to get around. No tickets needed just jump on and off as you please. Driver usually has tip jar on board. The 151 bus is also a good way to get from State St. to Michigan Ave.

Ed Debevic's is a fun place to eat. It's on Ohio just down from the Hard Rock Cafe. It's an old fashion diner. Waitress will dance on the counter, chomp on their gum, act rude. Lots of fun!!! Carson's Ribs (Yummy!) also near Hard Rock & Ed's. The Billy Goat is another famous Chicago place. Made famous on Saturday Night Live. If you want a Cheesburger.

Wendella boat tours are a great way to see the sights www.wendellboats.com. I would recommend the river & lake tour. Located just below the bridge on Michigan Ave. Great to see all the architechture and city skyline.

Other fun things: Science & Industry Museum, John Hancock observatory at night, paddle boats at the Lincoln Park, Millenium Park, Marshall Field's (State St.), Oak Street Beach.

Have a GREAT time!!!

i second the wendella boats advice, i didn't even know about those trolleys (good to know). there's a bar/restaurant above the john hancock observatory that you can get the same view, but you don't have to pay the price for the observatory (you don't get the telescopes, and touristy things of the actual observatory, but it's just as good. plus, you can get a beverage while you look at the city for the same price or less.

I love Chicago!

DEFINITELY hit the Museum of Science and Industry.

Shopping is good.... of course, I always hit the Crate and Barrel outlet. But just walking up and down Michigan avenue is great--lots of fun shopping all along there.

And I second the Bandera's restaurant recommendation. If you like Chicago style pizza... GINO'S EAST... can't be beat! And....trust me on this one.... when you walk by a little popcorn store and there is a line of people out the door... and you wonder "why in the world would ANYONE stand in line so long for popcorn?" ... do not pass that door. GO In. Get popcorn. Get cheese corn and caramel corn. Even better... get a mixed bag that has both. Don't spend time thinking about how weird that sounds. Just do it. You'll wonder why anyone would pay that much for popcorn. Ignore that thought. Get it anyway. Trust me. Really. I've never steered you wrong before, Have I? (ok... I've never steered you before.. but that's beside the point) really.

Where are you staying? I live in chicago so know a lot of good places.

Most tourists like Navy Pier. If you go to Navy Pier the Seadog is fun!

Its fun to go up in Sears Tower also.

Tell me what kind of resturaunts you like. I tend to go to ethnic places like Rezas .

WOW! Thanks for the wonderful and helpful information on Chicago!!!

I'm even MORE excited now to be going to Chicago!

We’re staying at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers.

According to their website it is located:
In the heart of downtown Chicago
One block west of Lake Shore Drive
Walking distance to Navy Pier, Magnificent Mile, Millennium Park, the Art Institute, the Loop Business District, shopping, dining and entertainment

All information and tips are very appreciated!! I had NO idea that popcorn could be so enticing! yummmm.........
