Ive had a couple questions that i keep searching for the answers for, and i just thought i would poll you guys and see what you thought!
1)how often do you weigh? i seem to be a "scale-hopper" im on and off that thing a ga-zillion and four times a day!! Its driving me nuts and im sure cant be good for my psychological well being..
2)how long does it take before other people notice that your working your butt off? {literally} i know it may be shallow, but im DYING for someone/anyone to take notice... it would help ME think that there is a difference.. you would think.. that i could see one.. but.. i surely dont.. i DID take pics at the beginning of THIS particular motivation.. at 283.. so im hoping when i get a few off ill be able to tell a difference.. which leads to..
3)how often do you take pics? i mean, how often does your body show a difference? should i take more at 50 pounds gone? or sooner? or weekly? or ... ARRRGGHHHH
4)how much water do you drink? i have set a goal of 2L a day.. but i still feel thirsty.. i know my blood sugar and all that are fine.. but i just wondered what you all do..
5)has anyone noticed "bad breath".. when i am dropping weight like this i notice i have dragon breath! I have to get ahold of the gum and chew like nutso.. and i have very VERY good oral hygiene.. {im slightly OCD about it} so could it actually be a side effect of losing fat?
1) once a week, sometimes twice
2) at about 50 lbs. gone
3) I still couldn't face photos at 25 lbs. gone, so I think my first set was 50 lbs. Then I think I did 65 and around 85. I probably won't do anymore until I reach 100 lbs. lost.
4) I drink at least 8 glasses, more when I exercise hard. If you're thirsty, drink!
5) I believe that your bad breath could be from ketones, when the body breaks down fat for energy. People on diets like Atkins experience this problem because their body isn't getting enough energy from carbs.
1 - I weigh once a week. Sometimes more if I'm really focusing on seeing results Mainly once though.
2 - My family has noticed but they also know that I'm losing it and how much I've lost so far. I haven't had anyone outside of my family (that lives here) notice though.
3 - I just recently took a picture at 27 pounds lost. It was my first "for reference" picture. I'm figuring at 50 I'll take another picture. It depends on what you want.
4 - I try to drink at the very least 100oz a day. The past couple of days I've been hitting 120oz. Yesterday it was 140 and today I've surprised myself with 210oz. Which is 6L. If you're thirsty.. drink!!! Don't deprive your body from what it needs
5 - I haven't noticed bad breath.. but I'm not on a specific diet. Just cutting out the bad foods.
1) once officially, and usually another 2-3 times just to see changes and trends (for instance, I usually weigh 2-3 pounds more at night than in the morning).
2) hard to say. Some people noticed after 30-40 pounds and said something. Now (after 75 pounds) many people notice, but not all say something (don't know how to bring it up, or embarrass me maybe). I've become more open in talking about it (early on I DIDN'T want the attention)
3) I take them about every 15 pounds. I do see slight differences. I don't have any kind of "before" pic really...
4) I don't track or worry about water much.
5) No bad breath here, but I have also heard that about Atkins (I calorie count).
1.) Well, I weight every day - but I know that the scale is just a tool. I used to let daily fluctuations drive me crazy. Now I am looking for long term patterns. If it is hurting you mentally to weight frequently - then only weigh once per week.
2.) That really varies. I think I had lost about 30 pounds before anyone noticed.
3.) I have a really bad time with body image. I look in the mirror even today and still see a really really over weight man. I take a front, side and back picture every 10 pounds. It really helps with body image. I can see the weight loss in a series of photos when I can't see it in the mirror.
4.) I drink about 100 oz per day.
5.) I have only seen that on ketogenic diets under major carbohydrate restriction. I have not had a problem with it with a balanced diet.
I wish you the very best!

1) Every day, because once I didn't weigh myself for about a week and a half and I gained over 10 pounds!! Now it has to be every day, and I know that there will be flucuations and gains, but I don't beat myself up. It actually motivates me when I do gain to kick it back into gear.
2) It took my sister about 30 pounds to notice (she is obese herself, so she always watched me closely). It took everyone else like 50-75 pounds and my sister's boyfriend just said last week, "Gee, Christian, are you losing weight?" After I had already lost 120 pounds!!! Talk about unobservant!
3) I just took pics. I actually wish I had started at the beginning so I could have a nice set of progress pics. I think every 20 pounds would be good. And then every 10 or 15 pounds after 175ish, because the difference is more noticeable on a smaller body.
4) My water intake varies day to day. I always *try* to drink at least 32 ounces. On a good day, I'll drink the staple 64 ounces. I used to not drink any and just recently begun decreasing my diet pop intake (4-5 cans a day, out of control). I'm now only drinking one a day and drinking water and tea instead.
5) I don't have bad breath, but I've heard if you are going the low-carb route, you get weird-smelling breath. Ketosis causes this. You may be in ketosis if you are not eating enough generally. But if you are purposefully restricting carbs, this is normal.
1. I weigh once a day, depending. I always weigh with no food, after I pee. If I feel like I'm getting obsessed, I eat breakfast first thing in the morning. I only record once a week though, the rest are "tests" heh.
2. People notice weight loss on me pretty quickly, I've had people comment after only 2-3 pounds. Takes about 10-15 pounds before its wide spread though, maybe people focus on my weight too much? Cuz 2 pounds shouldn't be THAT noticeable.
3. I haven't taken any pics, I think I'll regret it though.
4. 2-3 litres a day of water seems about good for me to lose weight.
5. I usually have WORSE breath when I'm not dieting, b/c I have more sugar then.
1. I weigh every day but only count Monday's as my official weigh-in.
2. I think people that knew I was losing weight started to comment around 20 pounds. For those that didn't know it was between 30-40 pounds.
3. I did my first pics at 50 pounds down and then again at 75 pounds down. I'm not going to do anymore until I'm at my goal weight.
4. I love water and I find it really easy to drink. I have 2 2-liter bottles that I drink while I'm at work in the day and I'll have another 1.5-2 litres through the evening.
5. I started to notice a little bad breath, went to the dentist and he replaced an old filling
Your responses really helped.. Im definetly going to try going for a whole week without weighing.. its just so darn difficult for me to do .. maybe i need to relocate my scale? It just sits there by the sink.. and i cant help but hop on! LOL..
I think ill do around the 25 pound mark for new pics.. i only have like two pics from my highest weight, i took drastic measures to avoid cameras then! . but i took a nice set on the 31st of March for posterity.
i am definelty gonna increase the H20.. from what i gather, im not drinking NEAR enough..
I have also made an appointment with my dentist.. i have never had a cavity and ive never had any kind of oral problem.. but im thinking that maybe i do now.. im not restricting carbs in any way.. in fact i have exactly 120 carbs a day.. {im doing the liquid diet thing} that is way up from the standard 20 of Atkins.. well, until i figure it out.. ill try not to breathe on any of you..

By all means drink water if you like it or find it helps you to eat less by keeping you full or if you feel dehydrated, but from what I have read, that claim that we all need to drink 8 glasses of water a day to remain hydrated is not based on any good medical evidence.
Here's a link to an article on snopes.com, which discusses urban myths.
I can't find the link right now, but I remember reading that the doctor who made the original claim was speculating, and even said that the liquid we get from all sorts of sources (including foods and caffeinated beverages) would probably count toward any such total.
1. I also weigh every day - in the morning and sometimes at night - just for kicks! I count Monday morning weight as official for the week.
2. Family members noticed around 20 pounds. Some "stranger comments" at the gym or latte stand (yep, I said those 2 places in the same sentence!) or pediatrician's office have just started happening.
3. I took my first pics after I'd lost 10 pounds - so around 253. My only comment about them when I saw them was, "At least I am happy!" It was quite painful to see the back side... I plan to take another set at 200. I'm in enough snapshots with my kiddos as it is - I don't need those full length, multi-angle "ME" ones right now.
4. I drink at least 96 oz. of water a day. I love water.
1)I weigh once a day, usually first thing in the morning after I pee. I only record Fridays weight, that's my weigh in day. You could also think about taking measurements, it's a good indicator of changes that aren't showingup on the scale.
2)I'm not sure. Everyone knows what I'm doing so I'm not sure if they see a difference or are just being nice because they know i'm working hard. Except dh, he notices the difference in my body from hugs and such and comments on that and that started around 10lbs.
3)I took one set in December and will take another when I'm at 25lb.
4)My aim is for 64oz. but I try to get more in, some days I do and some days I don't. Totally depends on how the day is going, active or not, eating right or not.

I agree. I track my foods with DietPower, and it tracks the water content of most foods. For the past month, it's telling me I average 258 oz of water a day from water I drink and foods I eat. I averaged 90 oz of actual water drank, so foods play a big part. Fruits and veggies are mostly water BTW.
