Yes, they are. Sadly, I only had her for 8 months. She was a rescue from a shelter, approx. 10-12 years old and came with a whole host of health problems because she was abused and neglected most of her life. Final insult, the people that had her locked her in a crate and dumped her on the side of the road. I can't understand why, she was the sweetest little dog and I grew very attached to her. I tried to keep her healthy and happy for as long as I could, but her health just continued to decline until it was obvious she wasn't enjoying life anymore. So we had her put down. She was to the point where she could barely walk, kept getting lost or 'stuck' in corners, barking uncontrollably (even though she was deaf) couldn't breathe very well and didn't even know who I was anymore. It was time to let her go.
She had what they call Old Dog Syndrome, technically referred to as Cognitive Canine Disorder. Basically it's Alzheimer's/senility in dogs. She also had heart disease, failing kidneys, you name it. That poor dog was a walking pharmacy.
Her spirit was broken. But I made some breathroughs with her while she was here and did my best to show her that she was loved. And really, that's all these little guys want. Someone to love them.
My husband works part time on the weekends at the local dog shelter as their computer programmer and the dogs that come in there - it's just awful. Beat up, starved, one even had a broken jaw from being kicked by its owner, things like that. We have another Dachshund (Peg was a Dachshund mix) who is also from the shelter. Her owners brought her in one day and said, "We just don't want her anymore." My husband brought her home, we were fostering her over the weekend. That was almost a year ago, we never could give her back up, lol.
Fortunate are the doggies that have someone to love them because there are so many out there without that luxury.
If any of you have dogs, go give them a gentle stroke and a kiss. That's all they ask for.
