Unhappy Does anyone else worry about Bird Flu?

I am soooo terrified over it. I know that right now, it's a BIRD disease, but I worry about it becoming 'Human to human'.... It's just about all I can think about! Is anyone else super concerned about it? Have you done anything to "prepare"?

Sorry if this isn't the place to post this, I am just worried and wanted to know if I am being too paranoid, or if others feel this way too.

I tend to worry about things only when they actually happen, that may be good or bad, I'm not sure , but at least I don't stress too much till circumstances do actually happen. I do 'think' about it but not 'stress' over it...

No. If it looks like it's showing up in my area, I'll probably stay home more, use a lot of the alcohol based hand sanitizers when I go out and make sure I wash my hands like I should. We are over due for a global pandemic anyway. If it's not bird flu it's going to be something else.

here are a couple links I found:

http://www.ccs.k12.in.us/clj/GenInfo/HWT.htm
Germs and viruses causing these diseases are passed by such routine things as handling food, touching doorknobs, shaking hands, and putting your mouth on a telephone receiver. The spread of many germs and viruses can be reduced by hand washing with soap and water.

You should wash your hands:
after using the bathroom
after blowing your nose, sneezing, or coughing
before eating or handling food
after handling uncooked meat
after taking out the trash
after changing a diaper
after handling money
after playing with a pet.

To properly wash your hands:
use hot or warm running water
rub hands together for at least 10 seconds
wash the back of hands, between fingers, and under fingernails
rinse with warm water
pat hands dry, beginning at the wrist and moving down
turn off the water, using a paper towel

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), hand washing is the single most important way of preventing the spread of infections. Hand washing is the most available “low-tech” prevention of illness.

Studies Spot Obstacle to Human Transmission of Bird Flu
Two new studies help explain why human-to-human transmission of the bird flu virus has so far not happened -- and might not happen in the future.

Both reports found the H5N1 virus prefers to settle in cells deep within the lungs, rather than in the upper respiratory tract, as happens with human flu strains.

That's important because "most of the coughing and sneezing that transmits flu is going to be from the upper respiratory tract, and not way down in the lower respiratory tract," explained Dr. Arnold S. Monto, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. "So, unless you have relatively close contact, you're not going to have much [bird flu] virus get out."

The findings may also explain why bird flu has proven so lethal whenever it has managed to get a foothold in humans, the experts added.

That would be me. I am a constant worrier. Before the bird flu I was freaked out about SARS. I had to cancel my local newspaper service b/c at one point they went on and on about the flu in my area that I stopped taking my kids place like to the mall. I think I am extreme. Basically I am a nut job. My dr. even subscribed tamiflu for me incase of a break out. NUTS I TELL YOU!

I was in Turkey when the first case was discovered there in the bird population. I was also in Asia during the SARS epidemic, so perhaps it's me!

It's not something that worries me. What concerns me is those who are really at risk, the poor who work with chickens in unsanitary conditions, who don't have access to doctors, hospitals or medications.

And those who lose their livelihoods. In Turkey farms and farms of chickens were destroyed. There aren't schemes to support these people, so what do they do now that their whole businesses are destroyed? There isn't social security in Turkey and other Asian countries.

I am a school nurse. Guess who eveyone comes to see when they're sick! I am not too worried about it yet. I guess if it makes the jump from bird to human -human I will be more concerned. BUT, I am eating better and losing weight, so hopefully my immunity will see me through. I don't get sick often anyway.

Absolutely NO worries about bird flu here! I mean, look at the media outbreak over SARS, and now you never hear about it anymore. We have made major advancements to overcome AIDS in a relatively short amount of time (not that it's not still a problem, but as compared to the level of epidemic experts had predicted it would be, it's just not). I'm confident that even if this bird flu does become a human-to-human issue, we'll have a vaccine or treatment figured out soon enough to save most people.

I agree that we are overdue for a global pandemic. Maybe we've just gotten too smart for our own good

Not worried about it at all, don't even think about it either. Too many other things to worry/stress about!

Sarahyu, that second link that you posted has calmed me down a bit...thank you for sharing that! I read the whole article, and it seems a little less likely to happen, at least for now....thank GOD!

I have the same attitude about this as I do about the happenings in Iraq and elsewhere. There is absolutely NOTHING I can do to stop these things and if I think about it too much I won't leave my bed. You just have to keep going about your business of living. Take Care

The ONLY way you have to worry is IF you work in a poultry plant and handling feces and the blood, raw meat..and then you do the unforgivable like Not washing your hands and clothes..

You can get info at the cdc site.

I never worry about things beyond my own control - life's too short to spend it inside hiding from something that's out of my hands. And besides, if there is going to be a disaster, i may as well enjoy the time I have right now.
