For those of you using FitdayPC, how do you update when you're away from your main computer? I'd like to have the main copy on my desktop, but would like to have access while on my laptop.
Is there a way to copy the files between computers? I tried just making a copy of everything but my laptop couldn't open it .
If I can't use FitdayPC while away from home... well, that's a problem...
((Posting this here because I know a good number of us, as Calorie Counters, use Fitday. Also posting under General to see if I can get input from the general 3FC population))
OK...I have it installed on all of our computers (I have 4). ThenI use a thumb drive and drag & drop to the thumb, then to the next computer. I don't use the backup and restore. It is way too much trouble!
Not working for me. I copied the entire Fitday folder onto a thumb and tried to open my account on my laptop, but for some reason, it said it couldn't figure out what program to open with.
I have the downloaded version of FitdayPC. Do I have to buy another copy to get it onto my laptop?
FitDay PC has two parts- there is the program, which must be installed on each computer for it to work, like with the majority of computer programs. Just copying the installed program from one computer to another will not work. The second part of FitDay PC are the personal account files that hold all your data- that can be moved from one computer to another, as long as both computers have FitDay PC running on them. I wrote out the various steps you'll need to do- not knowing your level of computer skills so I tend to write it as if I was explaining it to my 79 year old mother who knows very little about computers; which makes it look like a lot more steps then it really is- especially when I have to write it out ...its so much easier when I can just tell someone.
First off, you will need to install FitDay PC on your laptop- just copying the folder from your desktop will not work, as you discovered. When you downloaded FitDay, did you let it install directly onto your computer or did you have it download the program & then install it? I make it a habit to always download programs & then install- I spent too much time tracking programs the next time I needed them for another computer or such when I use install as it downloaded. Once you had installed it either way, you had to enter your Name & REGISTRATION KEY to activate the program- don't worry, FitDay will give you that again if you don't have it (but not all software companies are that nice).
If you did let it install directly, its okay- FitDay is pretty easy to navigate to get back to were you need to be to download the program. From the main FitDay.com page, click on one of the links for FitDay PC & you should get the intro page for the program- at the bottom are several options, click on SUPPORT & then CUSTOMER LOGIN. If you remember your name & password, enter it; if you don't, all you have to know is what email you used & they can send you your Account Name & Password (different then program Name & REGISTRATION KEY, btw). I'd forgotten mine & they sent it within seconds. Once you have that, sign in & click on DOWNLOAD & INSTALL FITDAY; download it to your laptop or USB-FlashDrive & use the Name & REGISTRATION KEY provided on the download page to activate the program after you install it. I highly recommend making a copy of the downloaded (but not installed) program on a CD or DVD & writing your Name/Registration Key on it, so you have it if you get a new computer or your hard drive crashes or anything else- FitDay makes it pretty easy to re-download & get the registration info, but most programs do not & if you don't have both, in some instances, you may end up having to buy a program again.
Once you get the program up & running on both computers, its just a matter of moving your personal account data back forth. You can use Backup/Restore (see FitDay PC help menu), though it sounds like HappyWife does something a little different that works well for her. You may have use Windows Search (START>SEARCH) to locate your personal account date file the first time- search for *.fdy & it will locate all the FitDay Personal Accounts & any backups of personal accounts you may have made. I played with it on my computer- setting up a dummy account first, just to be safe to practice with & if you save the your personal data to a USB/Flash drive, it works fine. When you open FitDay the first time or if it can't find the location of the last account opened, it should come up with the Welcome to FitDay screen & show options of Create New Account, Open Existing Account, etc. If it opened into an account automatically, select FILE tab>Close Account to get the welcome screen. From the Welcome Screen, select Open Existing Account, navigating until you locate your FitDay Account File (*.fdy) & it should open right up. When you close out the account or program, it should automatically save it where it opened from- which would be your USB/Flash-drive.
If it was me, I would probably have it save my account somewhere on my hard drive & then use the automatic backup feature to create a perfect copy to move from one computer to another- that way if anything happened to the USB/Flash drive or the data, you wouldn't lose all your information. You can change the auto backup settings by selecting FILE>AUTO BACKUP SETTINGS and making your USB/Flash Drive the backup location. Alternatively, you can select FILE>BACKUP ACCOUNT to make a backup in a particular location, without changing the location of your automatic backup on program closure. The only downside to using the automatic backup, would be that if you use several different USB devices, they may not always be assigned the same Drive Letter if they are not hooked up in the same order each time. If this might be an issue, I can try to walk you through assigning a letter to a USB Flash Drive permanently for that particular computer- its not hard, but its not something really obvious in Windows either that most people do (though its saved me a lot of headaches with not having to figure out which USB Flash Drive is which letter all the time).
I hope this helps- like I said, when I don't know what level of computer skills a person has, I tend to be even more detailed. I would rather have someone be able to skip half the steps then get frustrated because I didn't mention something.
Hot diggity! Between the two of you, I think I have all the info I need! I had a feeling I was missing the *install the program* part, but wasn't exatly sure how to get it over there. When I tried to install, it wanted me to set up a totally new account rather than merely reading my old files. Thanks for filling in the details.
I'll probably use the flash-drive method for moving files.
I'm not travelling yet, but I just wanted to get everything set up so when I do travel, I won't be scrambling (and panicing) at the last minute. Can't wait to get this all set up tonight!
Thank you so much! I ended up uninstalling my earlier attempt and erasing it off my flash drive. Then, I started all over from scratch, using your guide.
Had to make an entry on the laptop to get that copy to *take* but from there on, it worked!
Thanks so much! Now I just need to take a trip somewhere! Oh, and remember to make a copy of my current desktop entries before I do!
