Default Some people have it so easy...

I just spoke to my good friend who I haven't seen in around 2.5 weeks. I told her that I had lost 14 pounds since Jan. 2 and I was excited. To my dismay, she told me that she lost 14 pounds too. The difference is that she now is 5'7" and 112 pounds, and she didn't try to lose weight. She just did and she has been eating tons more calories and protein shakes to gain back some but it's not working.

Why do some people seem to transcend the rule that if you take in more calories than you burn then you will gain weight?

Well, it seems unfair. But what if her weight loss is the result of an undiagnosed illness? She wouldn't be the lucky one then, would she? Or maybe she's exercising a lot harder and a lot longer. My point is that it is almost always discouraging when we compare our situations to other people's and, more often than not, what we think we see isn't necessarily what is actually going on. We all have our crosses to bear.

And even if she is a medical wonder it doesn't change what the rest of us have to do in order to lose weight. So, try not to focus too much on how easy she has it. It will just end up making you feel negative towards your own weight loss efforts and that is always counterproductive. I know I've been there - I grew up with a sister has always seemed to manage her weight with the greatest of ease!

Wow! 14lbs in about 5 weeks!?!?!?! Congrats!

I can understand your feelings about your friend's weight loss. Is it ok if I feel that way about you???? I'd be thrilled with a 14lb weight loss!

Keep up the good work!

I know, I know. I'm happy with my weight loss. I was just commenting that every time I lose weight it seems like so do the people that are around me so I end up still being the bigger one.

My friend doesn't have any medical problems that either I or she knows of. She doesn't weigh herself and the only reason that she noticed that she lost the weight was because she went to the doctor for a check-up. She also does not work out at all, ever.

But, again. I'm happy with my weight. I even told her she better try harder to gain weight. She has a BMI of 17.5 now which is classified as underweight.

Hmmm, is the doctor's scale the only scale she's ever used and if yes, is it the exact same scale as last time. If no, then there's a chance the difference is in the scales not the person. Just a thought.
